Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional running on an HTC StarTrek
It seemed pretty impressive when a user managed to get Windows Mobile 6 Standard up and running on a busted old HTC StarTrek -- but WM Professional 6.1 on that badboy? You had us at hello. A member of the xda-dvelopers forum named Erofich has managed to hack together an install of the touchscreen-only mobile OS for the decidedly non-touchscreen flip phone. The configuration includes a number of workarounds for using the keypad as opposed to a finger or stylus, and it looks like there aren't a ton of issues right now. We're pretty sure that this isn't the speediest or most robust implementation of the software, but it's an admirable feat nonetheless. We doff our caps to you, sir.

Being one of the few users of this phone, this would be a welcome upgrade. I'll definitely try this one out.

Hey WM news on Engadget without any sarcasm!! Score 1 for Joshua.
kastonie @ Mar 20th 2008 2:39PM
what exactly does the .1 extra do more than the regular winmo6?

Notable changes in 6.1
- New version of Pocket IE has SOME new zooming features but they arn't great
- Native support for threaded SMS messages

There's also an improved Notes and a few other minor stuff, mainly to do with authentication
Dave @ Mar 20th 2008 4:12PM
agreed...minor (yet very welcomed improvements)

No big news here. I've had 6.1 on my Dash (HTC Excalibur) for the last 2 weeks.

Hey guys! Thats WM6.1 (!)Professional(!) running on HTC StarTrek (!)Smartphone(!)

I'll be impressed when they hack up a Windows Mobile 6 / S60v3 Symbian dual booting N95
Dave @ Mar 20th 2008 4:13PM
Yeah well maybe you can get those nonexistant windows drivers for an N95 and then get back to anyone that cares.

love my startrek, maybe i should try this before i give it to my mom and get a (insert hot new phone here).
Dave @ Mar 20th 2008 4:14PM
Insert a hot new phone where?
larcen007 @ Mar 20th 2008 4:50PM
I have the (insert hot new phone here). Its ok - sleek design, fast UI, but not as fast as (insert hotter newer phone here). I would have gotten the (insert hotter newer phone here) if it didn't cost (insert ridiculously high number here) dollars.
But if I were you, I would wait until (insert your cell phone carrier here) releases the (insert hottest yet to be released phone here). I hear it wont be released until (insert some date in the future), so you have some time to save money.

SUHWEEET!!!! I hated the old WM5 look that came with mine so i put in a new homescreen, now I can get so much more.
sk @ Mar 21st 2008 8:13AM
I loaded it up on my Cingular 3125. It works great and to my surprise runs faster than the old wm5. Just make sure to back-up all your data and GPRS settings before upgrading. Other than that it was a breeze to install. Also make sure to install the os patch after you upgrade. It fixes some minor issues.
Blakamin @ Mar 22nd 2008 3:27AM
Where is this OS patch you speak of?
