Teclast's M26 PMP touts oodles of touchscreen
Quite frankly, Teclast's M25 was darn close to being solid, but it's pretty safe to say the M26 trumped it tenfold by ditching the scroll wheel in exchange for a few more millimeters of precious touchscreen. This admittedly sexy PMP features a 2.6-inch 400 x 240 resolution capacitive touch panel, support for RMVB, RM, FLV and AVI file formats, TV out and Microsoft's PlayFX abilities, too. Judging by the interface shot, it'll also handle FM radio and a slew of music / photo formats, and while there's no definitive price just yet, you can look forward to choosing between black and white whenever it lands.

uhh why does it say stting?
Ellianth @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:50PM
The license for the font they used is by the letter. Using an extra s and an e would have set the price of this device through the roof.
Pretty nice looking device though.
Aguiluz @ Mar 22nd 2008 4:36PM
setting - 7 Letters
---
e-book - 6 letters
photo - 5 letters
music - 5 letters
video - 5 letters
radio - 5 letters
stting - 6 letters
---
You see, if they added an "E," it won't fit. :-P
Nick @ Mar 22nd 2008 5:40PM
@ Aguiluz
I think it depends on the number of characters.. E-book has 7 characters, so why would Setting not fit in there?
Nick @ Mar 22nd 2008 5:41PM
Woops sorry e-book has 6 characters of course.. XD
Metkis @ Mar 22nd 2008 5:56PM
Why not just use "Option"
or "Setup"?
Adam @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:07PM
there's really a button called "stting"??
like....adding the E for setting made it look that bad??
John @ Mar 23rd 2008 2:17AM
No, they accidentally put in two "t"s; it's for the high-voltage taser that pops out of the top.
Adam @ Mar 23rd 2008 2:19AM
LMAO HAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!
stunta @ Mar 23rd 2008 1:19PM
lol @ John. Now I realize why I keep coming back to engadget - its the reader comments!
computer.dude.28 @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:08PM
it also handles E-books and voice recording. You can see it in this image

Z @ Mar 31st 2008 9:29PM
big deal, my ipod touch can do that...with a few tweaks, o' course
helloUser @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:11PM
There should be a small tactile dpad underneath the screen. Touch based interfaces arent very accurate. Hell, why not ever something similar to the scroll ball of a blackberry? Id have much more appreciation for touch based mp3 players this way.
clearThumbtack @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:36PM
Man, touchscreen keypads are awesome. You can type so much faster on them than a tactile keypad because you don't actually have to press a button each click.
You just have to be confident in your ability to type on the thing, and keep on going.
schmitty338 @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:40PM
I thought the same thing when I was thinking of getting the HTC Touch...it has a D-pad with central button for action, but i've have my Touch for about 5 months now and I NEVER, ever use the D-pad....everyhting is so easy with the Touchscreen...
Touch screen + good UI = No need for buttons!
Aguiluz @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:43PM
Though I won't be trading my buttoned gamepads for a touchscreen soon.
BrianB @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:43PM
It comes in white:

Fox @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:48PM
Main advantage of buttons is blind operation. I can control my Archos in my coat pocket without having to see it. I use the touch screen when it's out and I can see what I'm doing.
happy_penguin @ Mar 23rd 2008 11:33PM
There's definitely something to be said for having the tactile feel of actual buttons. I love the iPhone but buttons are easier to use.
rayw @ Mar 25th 2008 7:41PM
I tried controlling my device via the touch buttons too, but because it was in my pants pocket I got harrassed by the cops for indecent behavior ...
Reid @ Apr 28th 2008 7:56PM
Yeah, I can type quite a bit faster on my iPhone than on a phone with physical keys, as long as I'm looking at it. Try to do it without looking and the accuracy goes to hell.
Inugami @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:50PM
So... Ipodtouch or this? This does look sexy.
y3k.nik @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:53PM
looks like an ipod touch AND a zune rip off
Bravo Oh Chinese Lord of Mockery.. Bravo!
michael @ Mar 22nd 2008 1:58PM
"TV out and Microsoft's PlayFX abilities"
Can someone explain what PlayFX is? This if the first time I heard of it. Is it already on the Zune? What is it?
BrianB @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:25PM
Playfx
http://www.pmptoday.com/?s=playfx
Phoenix @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:03PM
Man... It's something that actually looks like an iPod Touch ripoff... and yet no mention of it being an iPod Touch ripoff...
What the hell Engadget? I don't doubt that this is a great PMP, but you call things nothing like the iPod Touch iPod Touch Ripoffs... and not this O.o'
Joe @ Mar 22nd 2008 4:09PM
Since when did Apple own the shape rectangle?
Ellianth @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:57PM
WE complained when they said stuff like that. They stopped, and now you're complaining? *kick*
Phoenix @ Mar 22nd 2008 3:09PM
I'm not actually complaining. I'm just saying.
it's a good thing :p
JARSInc @ Mar 22nd 2008 9:03PM
I think it looks more like the Samsung P2.
macserv @ Mar 22nd 2008 11:30PM
It's not any one thing (like a particular shape or a color) that makes the design uniquely Apple's. It's all of the details put together.
Apple doesn't "own the shape", but when you've got the exact same rounded corners and rounded edges (to pretty much the same radius), with a metal bezel, black inset, and single button containing a small, simple stroked shape...
Well, come on, you can hardly blame people for accusing it of borrowing heavily from Apple industrial design. A less verbose way to say that is "rip off".
Inugami @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:05PM
Yeah what is this "PlayFX"? I think its something new cause i found nothing about it on google.
anodynewake @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:15PM
Say hello to the iPhone... oh wait... my bad, I mean the new "Telcast M26". The new Telcast M26 ships with built-in Ego-boost™ functionality. For those unwilling or unable to drop down the cash for a REAL iPhone, the M26 will deliver you the same public affection, "trendy" label, and "I rock" ego boost as if you had purchased a real iPhone: your ego will soar, your wallet will remain fat, and your friends... well, you'll still have none. The M26: the best way to make yourself feel cool when you want to be cool so badly.
I hate the iPhone, but I hate ripoffs of products even more. Trash. Plain trash.
Ameen @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:29PM
Its a sexy PMP for God's sake, douchebag!! Btw, my girl friend looks way better than Angelina Jolie..
Kizorblade @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:37PM
@Ameen
Does she have bigger breasts and lips then Angelina Jolie? Because DAMN.
Oh and don't forget that look on her face... that's important too.
anodynewake @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:39PM
Ameen,
I'm not sure if you read the bottom of my post, but I clearly stated:
"I hate the iPhone, but I hate ripoffs of products even more."
You're missing the point completely... It'd be like buying a car that looked exactly like a Ferrari simply for the image. Guaranteed there are much better PMPs out there than this, but this one is bound to succeed because it looks like the iPhone. Get it?
mymaclife @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:59PM
@ Ameen
But I bet you look nothing like Brad Pitt!
BTW does she have adopted children from the Sub-Sahara?
eggothewaffle @ Mar 22nd 2008 5:03PM
Following your logic, the iPhone/iPod Touch are inferior products because they are simply visual ripoffs of all the Cowon PMPs (along with God knows how many other companies) that came long before the iPhone/iPod Touch.
Haven't some of you realized the limitations of design and variation when it comes to such a constraining form factor like a full screen PMP?
Ameen @ Mar 22nd 2008 5:51PM
Its true that I look nothing like Brad Pitt, and we don't have any children or even adopted ones for that matter..
LOL! Looks like a decent small(!)PMP with a healthy serving of oomph and sexiness, Maybe a lead choice for people who prefer their movies and videos in the DivX, XviD format.. Most PMP makers are going all-touchscreens on us..
Maybe thats what they call it "The Apple-Effect !"
Later, Mates..
Andrew @ Mar 22nd 2008 6:25PM
Ameen: I'm glad you two are happy together, just try not to pop her.
Mike10010100 @ Mar 22nd 2008 10:57PM
In the evolution of cell phones, companies and manufacturers are realizing that the most effective form for a cell phone to take is to have a full touchscreen so that the keyboard layout can change, and so that they can get the most amount of screen space possible.
Saying that this copied the iPhone's form factor is like saying this to another person:
"Hey! You! How dare you copy my simian ancestry! I'm the only one who can walk on 2 legs! That's it, get back to walking on four legs!"
Inugami @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:16PM
Wait this actually makes calls?
Ameen @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:31PM
Nope, Mr.anodynewake got a lil' iPhone happy and wanted to dish around the name around a bit, so that the fanboys come haggling for more..
anodynewake @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:40PM
No... it just looks like an iPhone.
Mark L. @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:57PM
andy, then compare it to the iPod touch. ^dumbass!
anodynewake @ Mar 22nd 2008 3:10PM
Mark,
the Touch doesn't have a polished aluminum "rim" like the iPhone does - see Apple's website. Appearance-wise, it mimics the iPhone. Technicalities, people. Read, then think, then speak. It's really quite simple.
mattwier @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:20PM
HD Size????
wifiguy @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:37PM
Ohhh, SuWEEET!! This is definitely the iPod Killer, this time, trust me!!!!
mymaclife @ Mar 22nd 2008 3:01PM
Famous last words, you sound like Balmer the day the Zune was launched.
neonikita @ Mar 22nd 2008 2:58PM
Hello, I ve read an old comment of you in which you told someone, that you have got the "pink template" to share. I would be very happy if you could send it to me also.
