So we've had a
SanDisk Sansa Fuze hanging around the office for a few days and already we can tell you that fans of the Sansa line will find it a welcome addition to the line. The interface feels pretty snappy and it's got some of the geeky things you're after (FM radio, microSDHC), a solid 1.9-inch display, and a price $70 cheaper than the nano at the 8GB level. Plus, we know it sounds old school, but we're really into the tactile click wheel, and the Fuze has the best one we've used in a long time. Check out the photos below, including a couple side by sides with a you-know-what.
Funny, my experience with WMP is way more positive than it ever was when I was using iTunes. But maybe I have different priorities than you do, as I can see iTunes working if you use it in a different way than I do.
Still, when I replace my old Creative Zen Micro, whenever that is, I think I'm going to bypass the iPod and go with something that plays nice with WMP, just because I like how it works.
This looks like a great improvement over the e200 series. besides the crappy startup time I never experienced the problems Ihar `Philips` Filipau mentions, although I used rockbox for better format support. The physical changes look great though, better scroll wheel, the home button is moved to a much better place, nd headphone jack moved to the bottom. I don't think the ui looks as nice with the wider screen, but that's just being nitpicky.
IMO, the proportions on that sansa are just perfect compared to the nano, small, but not triscuit-like, even if it is a bit bigger, it looks a lot better.
Ryan,
Can't you just mail Apple for a brand new one? I mean, everyone KNOWS the Engadget staff and Steve Jobs are just the best of pals, you fanboy, you! ;)
hmm. it only posted half my comment, interestingly.
anyway, it has loads of different codecs, it supports mpg video, has a file browser, games, and like 50 different language. but it doesn't have album art, as far as i know.
and startup is 10 seconds or less.
GAH, bad internet and a permanent posting system have foiled my efforts!!
i think im gonna stick with my ipod (30gb video) lol
wow, i'm definitely feelin the Fuze, especially seeing it side-by-side with the current Nano. i have a 1st gen Nano that is in dire need of an upgrade as the 4GB size is getting to be annoyingly small... but i hate the new form factor as it's just too stubby. i have to use two hands to use it comfortably as there isnt enough there for one-handed use anymore.
i was thinking about a refurb 2nd gen Nano... but for the money, the form factor combined with the SDHC slot on the Fuze, it looks like it's worth the $120 or so to check it out. and if it sucks, i'll just return/exchange it for a BNIB one and give it to my nephew for his birthday coming up and buy myself a 32GB iPod Touch.
i got a website of fashionable MP3/MP4 http://www.sescotel.com/products.htm?newstype=MP4&ntid=69 contact my MSN dragon2077@hotmail.com for further communication
"Plus, we know it sounds old school, but we're really into the tactile click wheel"
HA HA, we want our buttons back!
Hang on... Its small... And black... And 8GB... With a click wheel... Just like the black iPod Nano... Its even the same shape...
"...fans of the Sansa line will find it a welcome addition to the line" is a sentence that doesn't need 'line' in it twice.
Why don't they make it just like this(same size), but with full screen and touch. Nothing crazy on the touch end, just enough for function. I mean...if your going to copy Apple,do it right!
That's not Sandisk's market, they make simple, inexpensive players.
true dat
it looks like a nano
lolz
testing
I want one.
Looks cool but im loving my Sony Walkman nwz-a816 cannot beat 40 hours of battery life
iRiver?!? You must be nuts... I will bite that there are iPod alternatives out there but iRiver couldn't make me use their gimmicky low quality products again! We have like 17 of them and want to pitch them in the river! Saddle me with iTunes BTW I have 20,000 songs and I refuse to manage them myself via folders - iTunes is my saviour with my other programs like Serato... Sorry I guess I am another fanboy.
Anybody care about music? This thing has excellent sound quality ... on par with the Sansa Clip.
Thanks for the review. I was actually going to get a Sansa Clip but I was showed to this, the Fuze, and I thought, why not get a nicer player with an SD slot so I can have a really small, high-capacity player? I was looking for something for running and I wanted the Clip and I thought this one was too big compared to the Clip but I saw some videos of it and I realized it wasn't actually that big. My iPod Classic is big and has a hard drive, two things I don't want for running, hiking, walking, school, etc. Now should i get the 2GB Clip or 2GB Fuze? I want the Fuze because it doesn't always have to be as small as 2GB. You can improve it a lot. I don't know.
i'm glad that Sansa's wheel was improved. I have a previous model of e200 series that i got on http://go.shopsansa.com/content/e200 . But this one looks better, i'm speaking about the design.
