A-DATA intros "special edition" flash cards, drives for Eee PC users
You know something is really catching on when companies starts branding otherwise generic products as specially designed for said something, and it now looks like that's now true for the Eee PC, thanks to these two new clever bits of marketing from A-DATA. While you could of course use any USB flash drive of SDHC card with the laptop, A-DATA's apparently hoping that its new "special edition" flash cards and drives will sway over at least a couple of Eee PC users, and we don't doubt that they will. Apparently available only in 8GB versions, they each come in Eee PC-coordinating white, with the USB flash drive also boasting the extra bonus of a leather carrying strap. No word on pricing or availability just yet, unfortunately, but we wouldn't be surprised if they demand a bit of a premium over their non-Eee counterparts.

Why not just make the edge white and the rest another color. Thats what will actually be seen once in the EEE PC. Another pointless 'Made for something' device.
I am waiting for a larger screen touch panel EEE PC and will get the cheapest SDHC card available.
Vesh @ Mar 25th 2008 3:22PM
FINALLY! Now I can make that Eee PC purchase I've been holding out on....
Chuck @ Mar 25th 2008 5:05PM
Ok, that was a good one :-)
Erik @ Mar 25th 2008 3:25PM
On the packaging for the SDHC Card: "The 2nd HDD for your eee PC."
The only thing right about that sentence is the fact that it is second. I mean, the Eee is flash-based, right?
Ignatius @ Mar 25th 2008 3:36PM
Yeah... and this has been done with the Wii too. There are Wii-themed SD cards that specifically say compatible with the Wii.
Ignorance is bliss... and no matter how stupid you are, your cash is still green.
Phoenix @ Mar 25th 2008 3:49PM
Completely agree with that. I got mine for under half the price of the 1GB "Wii" card from Game... and mine was a 2GB
CosterMonger @ Mar 25th 2008 7:23PM
retail stores only make it worse on average customers by leaving this crap next to our goodies.
I prefer my highspeed 4GB SD for $20, if A-data wants to make this appealing: at least include built-in USB.
It's bad enough that I have to buy incompatible proprietary formats, now I get to do the same with universal.
next people will think they have to get a USB card reader to use there camera's SD cards on their EeePC.
CosterMonger @ Mar 25th 2008 7:27PM
and the packaging {the one on the left} is sexist... nuff said.
Aguiluz @ Mar 25th 2008 3:40PM
1. Get boring old cards
2. Paint them white
3. Brand them and markup
4. ...
5. PROFIT!

Looks like the rest of us will have to wait for some that are vista-compatible!

Tired_ @ Mar 25th 2008 4:02PM
These will sure look silly in my black Eee.
bartoron @ Mar 25th 2008 4:07PM
Not quite as bad as speed-rating HDMI cables, but still pretty bad.
Boo @ stupid consumers.
ReggieXuk @ Mar 25th 2008 4:11PM
Does Vistas ready boost work on the EEE?
Reader @ Mar 25th 2008 4:34PM
I don't see why it wouldn't, although Vista might not be the best choice for the Eee...
Carl Vitullo @ Mar 25th 2008 4:35PM
it looks like they spelled "Eee" wrong
they didn't, but it looks like it.
Jeff @ Mar 25th 2008 4:52PM
Huh?
Teetdogs @ Mar 25th 2008 5:41PM
double huh?
Reader @ Mar 25th 2008 10:32PM
I thought so too at first, the first 'E' is quite faint.
Teetdogs @ Mar 25th 2008 5:42PM
You mean I paid extra for my double speed HDMI cable all for nothing XD
/Sarcasm

Engadget Please FIX The Stupid Comment system, it only works like half of the time.

Selling generic white (and probably overpriced) sd-card with an Eee-Logo on them is a bit like selling generic white earphones for 29$. Isn't it?
djamison @ Mar 25th 2008 6:54PM
Leather carrying strap for a USB drive?! you've got to be kidding me....
BigTeebo @ Mar 26th 2008 12:04AM
If you want to make EEE-specific products, make a carrying bag for it that has room for a power supply, additional SD cards, maybe a tiny mouse, etc. My old Zeos Pocket PC has a more appropriate case for it that you can unzip & just use there. Even had room for 2 pcmcia cards. I would buy one.
Web Begole @ Mar 26th 2008 12:24AM
Happy birthday Engadget! It would mean the world to me to take a trip from NYC to LA!
mapin0518 @ Mar 26th 2008 1:23AM
Actually A-DATA 8GB SDHC is one of the few 8GB cards that work flawlessly on the eee PC, go take a look in the forums, lots of troubles finding cards that work. So it's kinda nice to buy a card that is sorta guaranteed to work w/ the eee PC. I bought one of their pre-eee branded 8gb cards for 30 bucks, and it's working great on my eee PC.
Young Law @ Mar 26th 2008 4:25AM

Denden @ Mar 26th 2008 10:44PM
Well the usb flash drive looks alright... but a needless leather strap and probably a 50% markup will deter me or any other educated consumer from buying it.
Good news is that there are plenty of ignorant impulse buyers out there for them.
