Nihon Uni shirts resist stabbing, make you feel like a superhero
Mind you, this isn't the first time we've seen garb constructed to withstand vicious knife fights, and apparently a few Japanese streets are becoming just as frightening as some in London. Reportedly created to provide protection against stabbers following an "increasing number of malicious crimes that have victimized children and late-night convenience store clerks," Nihon Uni has developed a t-shirt crafted from "ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fiber." Aside from rendering blades useless, the material is also completely machine washable and lightweight; still, the fabric can be penetrated by "sharp points," so it's up to you to steer clear of rooftop archers. Nevertheless, long-sleeved versions can be had this June for ¥22,000 ($221) to ¥59,000 ($593), while the way less protective short-sleeved variety will run you between ¥19,000 ($191) and ¥52,000 ($522).

So if the knife has a really sharp end, will it penetrate?
that's what she said
Stab = yes
Slash = no
Who slashes? I mean, for real! Any good thug knows that stabbing is the only way to attack.
Even if it's only slash resistant, I'd buy one. Speaking as a knife-fighter, you're going to see 1 intial thrust that starts the fight and then slashes to the abdomen from thereon out (it's the biggest target). Supposing you make the initial parry, or even if you don't and you turn the blow into a side-slash, that's worth the $500 right there. Furthermore, I'd wager that it's at least pierce-resistant if it's slash impervious, and that's more than enough of an advantage to win a knife fight. I have to survive the surprise attack; after that it's the difference between the guy-with-the-knife and the knife-fighter.
BTW- tanto and kerambits would be very interesting to see demonstrated with this fabric. The former for it's spearpoint and the latter for the ripping action of the blade. Show me how this holds up to them and I'll show you $500 I'll happily plunk down.
...For those that don't know waht those two knives are- look 'em up.
WTF?!? Why the hell do you knife fight? is it a crazy-ass hobby or do you just live somewhere rough as hell?
Wow, a serious comment. Thank you.
I think the main advantage of this is that you wear it under your clothes so the attacker doesn't know you have it. They slash you and don't get through and it might take a while until they realize why. Long sleeve would be way more useful in an actual knife fight. But it looks like it's very thin, so this is good stuff.
I want one to bad xl in American size be over 500.
What???
That's what she said.
i think i saw some nips....or is it just me? if i can see the nips clearly, I think i'll take the stab at those...
Yeah, her nipples are showing.
How much DP does it have? Defense Points? noo...I meant D!ldo/D!ick Protection. With the readers here, no Kevlar Sporting Boobilicious Blonde Babe is safe. Ohh wait...
Malone: Isn't that just like a wop? Brings a knife to a gun fight. By the way, nice shirt.
This brings back memories of reading Snow Crash and visualizing the movie that was never made.
im pretty sure it can protect against stubby blunt objects.
What a manly looking chick, eugh.
Nothing manly about her, dude. You're officially gay. Turn in your man card at the door.
@BigD145:
So when will air-mail make ground-mail obsolete?
*Awaits for the obligatory "I see what you did there."/"Har har."/"Ba-dum-tsh."*
Oh no he d'int! Ohhhhh...
@phanbouy:
I believe the term is "needle-dick." Pencil-dick is too generous.
I'm sure a hairy chested middle aged man wearing a semi-transparent shirt wouldn't have attracted nearly as many horny geeks......... or would it?
She while every one makes subtle references that are funny, you're stupid and obvious.
Twitter me when the bullet-proof version is available...
I think it might risk pissing off your attacker, who would then slash you in the face instead...
So what if you wear two of them at the same time? Are we getting up to stab resistance then?
I'm guessing subtlety isn't your strong point.
It's either "waits for the" or "Awaits the." What you wrote just sounds stupid. ;)
*sigh*
I'd imagine that the "sharp objects" they're referring to are most likely needles and such? :)
Otherwise you might as well just buy bulletproof vests ;)
Why would you want to see a beautiful girl getting stabbed? :O
Curse you Engadget! :D - That was supposed to reply to James Cameron (2nd page)
@Devon
Well also speaking as someone who seems to somehow get jumped all the time by people with knives, spears, and other obscure asian weapons, I find your comments to be right on. I think theres a real unserved market of people who are constantly assailed by ninjas and samurais during their walks through dangerous parts of town. I myself would definitely pay lots of money to know that my ass is safe from all the sorts of spears n kerambits and what not that all these thugs and gang members seem to be packing these days.
At least i wasn't the only one thinking it
She obviously has the shirt on backwards and inside out -- I can see the tag in front of her neck! No wonder she looks uncomfortable. Common guys, I know the "can I see nipple?" game is rather distracting here, but this is just obvious.
Anyway, I can't wait to see the slasher films featuring bouncing bimbos with these shirts on. They always keep the running and bouncing part too short, so this should help extend those scenes quite nicely. Maybe the protection will lower the scream volume a bit too -- that's always so annoying. I much prefer huffing and panting. Oh sorry, wrong type of gadget site...
That still won't protect you from Dick Cheney shooting in the face, then hiding your lifeless body into a man-sized safe.
Wow...I wish they weren't so expensive. That is actually a great idea for cops, military, and anyone who lives in dangerous cities.
I have a shirt that is "arrow resitant". It's really new and cool. It's called a silk shirt. Do you think there is a market for them?
Historically that's what a silk shirt was used for in battle. An arrow would drill into the body, but the silk would entangle it twisting with it. The arrow could be removed by pulling the silk/untwisting it. There would still be considerable damage, however the chance of death was reduced considerably.
Did anybody else notice that she has the shirt on backwards and inside out?
