16GB Samsung P2 now available from Best Buy Canada
You may still not be able to get an iPhone in Canada (at least officially), but you can now at least grab a spiffy new 16GB Samsung YP-P2, which is a whole 8GB bigger than the model currently available in the US. From the looks of it, Best Buy Canada is the among the first to offer the beefed-up, Bluetooth-packin' PMP, with it currently demanding $330 Canadian (a $40 discount off the $370 list price) on the retailer's website. Apart from the bump in storage, however, there doesn't look to be any other changes to the player, with it boasting the same 3-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth 2.0 support, and H.264, OGG, and WMV playback as before. Of course, it's not very likely this'll be a Canadian exclusive for long, though we've still yet to hear anything official on that from Samsung.

Why was this great PMP compared to an iPhone in the opening sentence?
Jesus..

Didn't you get the memo? Everything with a touchscreen is automatically an iPhone / iPhone knockoff. They DID invent the touchscreen, you know.
Mike Cerm @ Mar 26th 2008 5:08PM
Sorry for the comment 'jacking, but the Samsung P2 DOES NOT PLAY H.264! Engadget, for some reason, loves to report that it does, but it doesn't. It play WMV (with restrictions on size, bitrate, and profile), and Samsung's proprietary SVI format. Anything else will require conversion.

It's funny, in every news article in Canadian media we mention the lack of the iPhone
"Ontario Budget contains help for education, no iPhone"
"In absence of iPhone, car stolen from curlers in Vernon, BC."
"Waterloo's RIM sees stocks rise after another day without the iPhone in Canada"
"France hints at supporting Canadians in Afghanistan, no word on iPhone support back home"
"Jays start season without Rolan, Ryan and iPhone"
You can see the trend.
Jeff @ Mar 27th 2008 3:22PM
(i know i know, there's absolutely nothing that makes this thing similar in any way to an iphone, blah blah blah)
anyway, i freakin' WISH this thing was a phone: it's better than any other Samsung phone out there, it just can't make calls. :(
I'd really like to see the YP-P2 get a cell radio crammed in it and sold here in the US. ...on Sprint. :)

Ok, ok, seriously, though, if this were 32GB I'd consider trying to scrape up the money.
Andrew @ Mar 27th 2008 1:30AM
Do you blend?
js @ Mar 26th 2008 4:03PM
iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone!!!!
Seriously, I thought I was getting a heart attack when nobody mentioned any iPhone/Apple related news today.
MacVicta @ Mar 26th 2008 4:05PM
Why would our iPhone lusting Canadian friends settle for this when they can buy an iPod touch, now available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB flavors?

Why would anyone settle for an iPod Touch when you can get the Samsung P2 instead?

Yevon @ Mar 26th 2008 4:45PM
First of all, I cant wait till the price drops on this thing. And second, I saw this on BestBuy Canada like a week ago. The blogosphere is constipated I see?
Steffen Jobbs @ Mar 26th 2008 7:08PM
At least somebody knows the facts around here. You hit the nail right on the head. At least they didn't duplicate the look of the iPhone.
Or were you just being sarcastic? Haha.
xundre @ Mar 26th 2008 5:00PM
Is this supposed to compare with the ipod touch?
Lovebaby @ Mar 26th 2008 5:46PM
I have the 8GB and I have a 8 GB Itouch. The Samsung has Bluetooth so I can listen to wireless headphones in the Gym. The Itouch (and Iphone) if I am not mistaken does not support stereo bluetooth. I ended giving up my Itouch to my daughter.
One bad thing, however - battery life on the Samsung is bad - it is dead after two days when off.
Josh L @ Mar 26th 2008 6:25PM
Same here. I have to dig the thing out of my laptop bag and plug it in every night. It's really my only complaint with it though. Otherwise a great little device.
Allen @ Mar 26th 2008 7:21PM
Ummm, try leaving it on for two days I guess. I've had mine running now for maybe thirteen hours nonstop to help me cram for exams, and it still has a full battery bar.
Bob @ Apr 12th 2008 7:50AM
It is a phone, kind of. I've been making calls on mine for days. It syncs with any bluetooth cell phone. You can receive incoming calls, via built in mic. You can even make outgoing calls, via built in dial pad. And it works with any carrier unlike the iphone. Wouldn't trade mine for any iphone.
