That huge bundle of
damning emails and documents Microsoft produced as part of the
Vista-capable lawsuit is full of fascinating information about how the company developed, planned, and launched Vista, but the latest juicy nugget to come out if it suggests that a lot of problems faced by the troubled operating system are actually NVIDIA's fault -- nearly 30% of logged Vista crashes were due to NVIDIA driver problems, according to Microsoft data included in the bundle. That's some 479,326 hung systems, if you're keeping score at home, and it's in first place by a large margin -- Microsoft clocks in at number two at 17.9 percent, and ATI is fourth with 9.3 percent. Now, the chart doesn't contain a ton of additional information that would help put it in context -- a specific time period in 2007 would be nice, as would and driver and OS versions -- but we've been hearing about NVIDIA issues with Vista from the start, and this seems to confirm it. So that's pressure by Intel to support incompatible chipsets, outrage by Dell and Wal-Mart that the Vista Capable program was confusing customers, Microsoft executives saying they had been
"personally burnt" by Vista, and now what looks like a huge NVIDIA driver problem -- who knows what else is going to come out of this lawsuit? At this point we're half expecting a photo of Gates signing a Save XP petition.
Windows has 86% of market share compared to the 6% Mac OS.
There are bound to be more documented issues with Windows. Just so many people use it comparatively. My girlfriend has a MACBOOK, she's never had issues with it, but then again she's never done anything with the Mac, besides Surf the net, write some emails, and use Microsoft Office. I push my machine to the max. Have TONS of software installed on it. Use it for minor development. Connect to my work VPN. XP use to crash for me once in a while...can't say the same about Vista. Vista has been working flawlessly. Haven't had it crash yet and i've had it since the first day it came out.
Oh and one more thing...
I use to get mad Browser Hijacks in XP. I use to spend hours getting rid of all the spyware and stuff, and 2 days later, some other Browser Hijack use to take over.
Haven't had that problem with Vista.
what were you browsing? I've never been... hijacked?
lol wow some people just wanna hate vista
op
i am a system builder I actually run my own shop and i currently have 6 computer in my house all running vista and have built many system for other with vista
and not had any huge issues at all well apart from like a web cam or something stupid like that but i been know to make my own driver for stuff like that now i understand not every one 1 has that level tech
But i am willing to bet most of u who had problem with vista either bought an oem like dell or hp or even apple and for the who built your own i bet u use cheap shit that was meant for xp lol a good example i am willing to bet u built a dumb gaming rigg using ide hdd y i dont know sata is better but u just had to have that out date raid set up by the way raid is kinda useless now days only practical to an it environment any more gamer don't need any more and i am also willing to beet u bought the lowest cd2 u could trying oc it y i dont know if u want 3 gig by one i mean come on now days over clocking kinda unnecessary any more i know u thinks it cool but realy kinda pointless
but any how back to my point the point is oem r famous for using below stander parts or bundling cheap crap along side name brand a good example wile trouble shooting some one eles oem laptop that keep crashing i found out it was the sound chip driver went to get new driver but oh wait it from some way off brand company no 1 every heard of who don't even have a website so there going to be no updates there so i ended moding some one eles driver to work on it so yeah dont by oem and dont think cuz u read a web site on how to build your own computer u can
find your self a good local system builder and have your shit made for u and i bet u wont have any problems and before some idiot says that what i did note i said find a good system builder and no it doesn't coast any more to have one made for then it would be to buy from oem the average system i build with lcd monitor even runs about 700 to 800 thats on par with most oem unless
u want even cheaper then there no hope for u and yes
to the point this artical i had issues with nvida for a wile now even on xp there driver r in really need work ati who not perfect at least admits and has steadily improved there drivers and thus i had less issues
OOOOhhhh so that explains why I've had more blue screens with my xps that has vista in 8 months than i did with my xps that had XP. I had NVidia for both but dont wanna give it up it makes everything look soooo beautiful
Vista, even major hardware suppliers cant be bothered to write drivers, after near 18 months of selling it

Well there's your problem- Quadros aren't made for gaming! If thats what you bought it for, you've wasted your money.
It seems that no one remembers the problems that many had with upgrading to windows XP. After the initial launch then came the SP1 complaints. I even remember not so long ago forum boards being filled from top to bottom with the "OMG SP2 KILLED MY WHOLE FAMILY AND RUINED MY LIFE" type comments.
It’s never going to be non-bloated, and therefore will require somewhat of a premium of hardware to run. It’s not going to be Linux stable and secure, especially not right off the bat. Like it or not M$ still dominates the market and therefore is able to dictate what most of us will have to go along with... eventually. Several years down the road there will be hordes of Vista faithful clinging to their SP2 or SP3 OS, vowing that they will never give in to the destroyer of worlds, 'Windows Seven.’
I was running an Nvidia Geforce 7900GT card before finally giving in and switching to ATI. Switching to ATI was a big deal for me, as I've only ever bought Nvidia cards. On XP, I never had a problem, but as soon as I installed Vista, I started having major issues with the Nvidia drivers crashing. Nothing I tried remedied the situation. When I couldn't even run C&C3 for more than a minute without the drivers crashing and bringing down the game, I finally got fed up and bought an ATI Radeon HD3870 card, and my system has been 100% stable ever since.
NVidia has been aware of these instabilities in their drivers for over a year and still haven't fixed the problem. As far as I'm concerned, that's unacceptable and I think it's a shame that NVidia can no longer hold on to the reputation of having rock solid drivers like they used to.
Ignore this- somehow posted before I was ready...
I'm failing so horribly right now...
I guess I won't be playing Doom in Vista w/my Nvidia card
I already rated myself down. I just didn't eant that asshat Acer to post it again.
all this proves is that early adoption sucks.
sign me up for the save XP and OSX 10.3
Microsoft's trying to pass the buck.
My system is hung way low.lol.
Nice. Blame NVidia. The question remains, why?
NVidia isnt responsible for 30% of my Ubuntu crashes. NVidia isnt responsible for 30% of XP crashes.
Vista still sucks. Trying to shift the blame is weak.
I really like Engadget, like no seriously..I like it.
30%??? too less.. talk abt 100%.. 100% crash are because of nvidia.
The only times my computer has ever crashed was when playing crysis. Get it together, nvidia!
my computer shaped paperweight is due to NVIDIA/Vista issues, add me to the list...
LOL You people are bad... MS says Vista is the greatest thing since sliced bread so it must be right?
Vista has a pretty GUI and some other small improvements but thats about it. In real world functionality Vista is nothing more than a Service Pack for XP. A service pack that adds more bugs than it fixes. And you folks that are on the MS/Vista band wagon you go right ahead and use your Vista, I prefer using my computer as opposed to figuring out compatibility issues.
Hey wickedphoneix...maybe you hadnt noticed but its your X FI bro! Not Vista. You got it twisted.
The irony here isnt lost with this article and your post. Vista 64 and Xfi??
No wonder "everything works with XP" whine....
What a tard...
Creative has released some new X-Fi drivers for Windows Vista 32/64-bit. This download supports the following audio devices only: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic, X-Fi XtremeGamer, X-Fi Platinum, X-Fi Fatal1ty, X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro, X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series and X-Fi Elite Pro. * Resolves an issue that causes OpenAL games not to respond
also running crysis on vista 64 with 2 8800's in SLI.... no crashes.
Nvidia driver issue fix on vista:
Smear a little peanut butter in PCI express x16 slot, install card, good to go.
And vista Rocks!
If you like slow
PS, 8800, 8600 or 7600 never bsod'ed for me on XP, Vista Ult., XPx64
Hi, I just built a new computer with Vista 64 right after SP1 came out. (I installed XP 64 when it came out only to be terribly disappointed.) Currently, in Vista 64, my video drivers crash all the time in 2d applications like Adobe Premiere and Windows Media Player, causing my screen to go black (forcing a reboot). This is using the Geforce 9800GX2 with latest (4/1/08) drivers. I never crash in the middle of a game (that's mostly what I do), but my TF2 crashes at least every other map change and the process is usually taking 1 - 1.5GB ram (out of 4). I am fairly certain these crashes would not happen on Vista 32.
