Daihatsu and Provision building HLXX 3D holographic dashboard, the future
If those darn kids would get out of the way, what you'd see before you is a fancy new dashboard that Daihatsu teamed with Provision Interactive Technologies to build for its latest concept car. They're calling it HLXX, and it's pretty straightforward: there's a traditional flat screen 2D dashboard that is used for all the usual driving infos, with a 3D holographic screen in front that overlays warnings or alerts so they're more easily seen by the driver. Daihatsu hopes to have HLXX in production vehicles by 2012, but until then we suppose we'll just have to pretend these gauges and dials on our dashboards are 3D. Oh wait.

The only thing I know about Daihatsu is that they were one of the few car companies that made the 85 hyundai excel look like a good car.
In this part of Europe, Diahatsu has been taken over by Chevy and all the models have been rebadged with the Chevy one.
Maybe Chevy will be getting the hologram thingy soon enough as well.
Ford got Volvo but I dont see much of their technology applied on Fords.
So I dont really think much technologies will deploy on those chevy.
Besides we all know Daihatsu is a part of Toyota
I think you mean Daewoo!!
I'll believe it when I see it: we've been promised stuff like this since the late 1970's. This can be filed alongside holidays on the moon, robot servants and food in a pill.
Don't worry, we're getting there. Big Macs are getting smaller and my Roomba picks up the crumbs that fall down when I'm eating it. Still it is a pity this is not happening on the moon.
How does this differ from the HUDs currently on offer by high-end manufacturers? It sounds either identical, or less useful. Am I missing the point?
Also, my Toyota Yaris claims to have a 'holographic' dash display. In reality, it's nothing more than a load of LEDs and a mirror, retro-arcade style. It hasn't improved my life in the slightest.
I'm curious to see what the current HUDs look like. Could you give me the name of one of the manufacturers that use them now. This will help me start my search.
Thanks in advance.
Plenty of people are doing it - just google around. Here's what 2 minutes found:
Corvette: http://wheeltalk.fancal.net/?p=577
BMW: http://www.motorauthority.com/cars/bmw/next-generation-hud-from-bmw/
I'm certain that Mercedes, Citroen, Nissan (in 1989), Oldsmobile (in 1992) and others also use this tech. Finally, heres a video of a kit which can be retro-fitted to your car, the DEFI HUD:

Enjoy!
Go away.
Apparently Diahutsu have incorporated some amazing new technology that can holographically morph yellow caps on to anyone so much as looking at the new dash.
Not sure if this is the exact same thing as they don't show any pictures or videos of the actual display (that was the most worthless gallery I have ever seen), but I saw the exact same thing, a 3d touch controlled holographic dash, at the Toyota Showroom/theme park in Odaiba, Tokyo. This was 2 years ago, and you could sit in the dash model and use the interface.
I uploaded a video that I took of the dash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y_IqogjJA8.
Who's Idea was it not to show a picture of the dash? Stupid!!!!!!!!!
Yeah my bad, I do have pics just not video. It was in a prototype bench thing and not an actual car, so it really didn't look like dash, just like a box with the screen, not very impressive.
Oh sorry, thought you were referring to my video. Anyhow yeah the gallery sucks.
lame, my dash is at leas 4D
The Daihatsu Charade... They got *that* name right.
Daihatsus are actually making some really neat cars in Japan, albeit Kei-cars mostly. They're making modern cars with really stylish "retro 60's" looks, with consoles that only now the north american market is adapting in their lincolns and cadillacs.
I have no doubt that these new gauges are going to be amazing.
