Nokia's N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition gets official
Right on cue, Nokia's WiMAX-enabled N810 Internet Tablet has surfaced at CTIA 2008, and yep, this critter is destined to go on sale here in the US of A this summer. Beyond that, you'll notice the familiar 4.13-inch touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and even a built-in webcam for video calls, Mozilla-powered browser, integrated GPS / media player, 2GB of internal memory and a microSD expansion slot. Heck, Nokia even touts this thing's ability to "access the Internet over WiFi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology." Also announced today is the freshly updated OS2008, which includes an enhanced e-mail client, support for Chinese character rendering in the browser and RSS feeds and "Seamless Software Update functionality" to boot. Needless to say, said OS will come standard on the currently unpriced Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition -- which is scheduled to land wherever WiMAX connectivity is available -- but existing N810 / N800 owners will also get the OS upgrade free of charge in Q2.

I love me some updated os2008 hotness!!!
Almo @ Apr 1st 2008 3:34PM
The OS upgrade is great but why on earth couldn't they just add mobile telephony to such an awesome device??? Is it really so hard?
Pdexter @ Apr 1st 2008 3:45PM
It really is. You make it sound easy, but i dont think Nokia would just suddenly get out of Symbian where they got 50% share of it and i'm sure Nokia can make it better than that hardware wise with TS phone. I would actually be kinda disappointed if Nokia's 2007 TS phone would be like this.
starkruzr @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:21AM
Disappointing for whom? Maemo is better for the consumer than Symbian, full stop.
Craig @ Apr 1st 2008 2:27PM
Sexy!
But expensive.
Better keep Spitzer away.
captainpease @ Apr 1st 2008 2:29PM
hot
retro77 @ Apr 1st 2008 2:30PM
Hopefully this will get the WiMax moving faster.
Tired_ @ Apr 1st 2008 2:32PM
Confused. N800 owners get a free upgrade to WiMax hardware??
Jaws @ Apr 1st 2008 2:43PM
free upgrade to the OS upgrade (software).
jackcutts @ Apr 1st 2008 2:54PM
Wasn't OS2008 always free? I sure didn't pay them anything.
Azureice @ Apr 1st 2008 2:38PM
Damn... I need one of these puppies BEFORE the summer... looks like I'll have to buy the non-wimax version... and the black is so sexy, too!
jackcutts @ Apr 1st 2008 2:53PM
Yeah I am thinking this N800 upgrade thing must be a mistake. There is no way a WiMAX radio was lying dormant in the N800 and nobody knew about it. Hope it's true though!
john @ Apr 1st 2008 2:44PM
MicroSD? or MiniSD (like the existing N810)?
john @ Apr 1st 2008 3:33PM
The specs imply MiniSD (same wording as on the non-WiMAX version).
Erwos @ Apr 1st 2008 2:55PM
How much is access per month? I live in a WiMax roll-out area, so I'd definitely consider one of these.
Dude @ Apr 1st 2008 3:02PM
Black with silver trim comment in 3..2..1..
Pdexter @ Apr 1st 2008 3:09PM
Damn that's hot. Thought still price needs to go down so it would be worth it for my use.
ma5t3rw1tt @ Apr 1st 2008 3:18PM
I was going to get this device but I got the iPod Touch instead. This device is pretty hot in terms of design & features. Nokia did a excellent thing making something like this and I must say I am very impressed with this product!
Pdexter @ Apr 1st 2008 3:36PM
Aye i got ipod touch too thought i was deciding over touch and Archos devices. I was looking mostly for a music device with big and good quality screen so it was after all pretty easy decission considering ipods lovely size and 16GB was enough for me.
N810 is still aimed for small segment like the older ones and you really need to need those features what it offers to make it right device for you.....thought there have been talk in rumours sections that N810 was just announced to update Nokia's aiging tablets and real new device would be announced after summer so i guess we will see then ;)
jjd @ Apr 1st 2008 3:27PM
Help me out. Where's the WiMAX network I would use with this?
gabriel.mgabby @ Apr 1st 2008 4:53PM
The three initial markets are Chicago, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. ; soon Boston and NYC. Sprint has said it would have 10 WiMax devices at launch.
The WiMax N810 will be available from Nokia's online store and its shops in New York and Chicago for $479.
Cheers.
Jaws @ Apr 1st 2008 6:22PM
in Canada... either Bell, or Rogers can help you out with WiMAX coverage.
chris at trade2save @ Apr 1st 2008 3:46PM
Like the GPS add on - It's what's inside that counts after all.

I think I would rather wait for extensive WiMax deployment before I pay for a WiMax device.
MPallavicini @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:25AM
agreed.
GaryZ @ Apr 1st 2008 3:54PM
if they could just come up with a better webcam for this thing...
roc @ Apr 1st 2008 4:07PM
Shame Nokia still can't seem to really commit to the platform.
FRZ @ Apr 1st 2008 4:35PM
The new shade is pretty nice.
Johan S @ Apr 1st 2008 4:49PM
"Access the Internet over WiFi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology"
So that means I need to carry around a separate cell phone in addition to it? That's lame.
Why not just give the thing cell phone capability??
MPallavicini @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:18AM
the reason it does not have phone capability is because it is not a phone. DUR noob.
Johan S @ Apr 1st 2008 4:58PM
Why does it have such a huge frame area on the sides of the display? I would prefer the phone be longer instead of wider. They need to get rid of the margin frame area on either side of the display. The device is already too wide as it is. And no all that frame is not needed to hold the LCD in place.
tizo @ Apr 1st 2008 5:26PM
It's actually very comfortable to hold and use because of the big beefy sides. I don't know if that was intentional, but it works for me.
L @ Apr 1st 2008 5:45PM
@Johan S: you're really the biggest whiner around, aren't you?
MPallavicini @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:23AM
if you want an iphone get an iphone. this is not an iphone. so it will not look/act like an iphone. AND ITS STILL NOT A PHONE!!! it has 4g data capabilities, but it is an MID. look... PHONE - SMARTPHONE - MID - UMPC -SUBNOTE... etc. its the one between smartphone and UMPC... do you see it?
HalfJoey @ Apr 1st 2008 6:11PM
I agree with having a smaller frame. Either add more screen, or shrink the frame.
So it doesnt require an additional plan as long as you have your bluetooth cell phone near by, which is connects to to get data? I hope we learn more about this. If it came down $100 I would be all over it.
matt @ Apr 1st 2008 6:37PM
They need to time the release for May... when the US tax rebates happen ;)
Cassini @ Apr 1st 2008 6:49PM
This is such a slick device, but I could never figure out why they don't just integrate cellular into this thing. They're so close; it has everything else.
WiMAX is great, but as far as the U.S. is concerned, until we have blanketed nationwide coverage for VoIP and data, cellular is greatly needed in a device like this, otherwise it's usefulness (which is supposed to be about connectedness) is greatly diminished.
On another note, and especially considering there are no cellular radios here, I also don't know why they don't integrate a SiRFstar III GPS chipset into this thing. If you're going to add GPS, why make it nominal when you can make it great?
huh @ Apr 1st 2008 8:02PM
It's too bad Nokia can't carry this upgrade policy over to their n-series, which cost nearly twice as much and are all incompatible with each other.
Eric @ Apr 1st 2008 8:02PM
Adding WiMAX to the crappy Nokia os2008 just means you can be frustrated even more often while attempting to use this device. It's a sexy device and the hardware has loads of potential, but Nokia has crapped out three generations of firmware that all have sucked, some less sucky that others.
Neil @ Apr 1st 2008 9:39PM
would this work in canada, with rogers portable internet (wimax)
FRZ @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:31AM
Well, there are no WinMax providers in NY so that sucks.
gabriel.mgabby @ Apr 2nd 2008 5:58PM

I am a novice so forgive me if this is a silly question-Does this device support activex (will Mozilla support activex is probably the better question).

Does anybody know XOHM working frequency and spectrum? I guess it's 2.5 Ghz... I googled but found nothing.
eggothewaffle @ May 21st 2008 4:27PM
Will this have A2DP? I see Bluetooth 2.0+EDR being mentioned, but googling hasn't given me any conclusive results :[
elisa @ Jun 2nd 2008 5:07PM
does anyone know why this is cooler than the others (N800, N810,) and why its better than the ipod touch? or not? o.O
i wanna buy something with wifi, music, and keyboard....so does anyone know of anything like that that is less than like 300? im kinda bankrupt right now~ :P
Jaspal Singh @ Jun 3rd 2008 10:15PM
