Time to buy an iPhone (again)
Gaurav @ Apr 3rd 2008 4:40AM
same here !!
rogier.schuitema @ Apr 3rd 2008 4:39AM
I'd have to agree, these kinds of developments definitely make it a LOT more appealing...
pscs @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:32AM
I hope this will work for the 2nd gen iPhone!
Or is apple gonna bring out another bootloader? Well, it shouldn't be difficult for them to mod this programme for the new iPhone.
Taylor @ Apr 3rd 2008 1:13PM
Yeah, buying my first today... I think? I'll mull it over... I'm sick of my tilt.

iceman @ Apr 3rd 2008 4:41AM
is there any way to get back to the original software after using pwnage once?
you know... warranty is nice
xnifex @ Apr 3rd 2008 4:47AM
i think you just restore back to one of their firmwares and you're good.
Paul Love @ Apr 3rd 2008 7:13AM
Not sure about that. You need to the Bootloader to be the same as was originally loaded on the phone.
Ziphone downgrades newer bootloaders.
Can this tool be used to (re) upgrade bootloaders?
bilzy @ Apr 3rd 2008 2:19PM
yes, I just tried it, after Pwning, if you restore a stock firmware, you can no longer restore a hacked firmware until you Pwn again.
bilzy @ Apr 3rd 2008 2:20PM
oh, and the pineapple icon is replaced by the apple if you are restoring an apple firmware. further proof.
jpxdude @ Apr 3rd 2008 4:43AM
I love Engadget

Mr Blurrycam, bringing you news as it happens!
niemassacred @ Apr 3rd 2008 5:06AM
So can you use this to put 2.0 on your iPhone and get Exchange support now? Or is that still down the road?
prototype @ Apr 3rd 2008 5:12AM
Great news!
....What does it actually do though? can anyone post a link to a feature list?
im sure im not the only one who is in the dark here?
timothy.abbott @ Apr 3rd 2008 5:14AM
i downloaded it.. but dont get how it works...
this will give me the 2.0 beta right?
seanb @ Apr 3rd 2008 5:22AM

Remember the old days when you just bought a phone and it just worked and you didn't have to commit yourself to an endless cycle of fiddling about with potentially-phone bricking illegal hacks, dodgy cracks and firmware upgrades?
Thank you Apple for making me 'think differently!'
Pc_Madness @ Apr 3rd 2008 6:27AM
As opposed to the alternative? Where you basically got what came with your phone. So if there was an annoying bug or lack of a feature, there was no chance at all it would get added in/fixed?
p.s. I don't own an iPhone / not a mac fanboy.
bondsbw @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:20AM
Wow... you do realize that you don't HAVE to hack your phone, right? Plenty of people, including myself, have lived just fine with just a plain iPhone. After all, that's what I paid for.
I'm not criticizing those who hack their phones... I tried it once, back in the 1.0.1 days. But I don't see the point about complaining that hacking your phone is so much trouble; did you seriously buy your phone based on the fact that you could find a way to get more from it than was advertised?
bondsbw @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:22AM
By the way... I'm seriously considering using this tool. But I'm not about to complain that it's difficult to use.
Jason @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:42AM
Up here in Canada we have an Oligopolistic cell phone market, and a monopoly GSM service.
100% of the iPhones here (and there are MANY) must be hacked to work.
I've been using unlocked handsets for years, as I refuse to be told what tech I can use and what it's allowed to do. That's the situation my parents had with Ma Bell.
wasabi @ Apr 3rd 2008 6:27AM
i was on a cellphone forum and some guy was really angry that people were unlocking their iphones to use with tmobile and the $5.99 tzone plan... i guess he's just jealous about paying too much for crap service from att.
Cahlito @ Apr 3rd 2008 6:54AM
good thing i just got my macbook yesterday!
prometheuszx @ Apr 3rd 2008 7:09AM
Does this work with the ipod touch?
bilzy @ Apr 3rd 2008 2:25PM
yes. using it here for that. make sure you have 1.1.4.
Joe @ Apr 3rd 2008 7:21AM
Someone may have already said it, but its worth reiterating- best application name ever.
slarity @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:06AM
So I've had an iPhone for quiet a while now (since the day they dropped in price) and I use and love At&t, can I still use my service fine with this? Also what are the biggest benefits? I feel like I'd have to play/tweak with it too much, it would take up too much of my CoD4 time.
as @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:25AM
I don't think that this will effect your att service, as long as you don't mess with the bootloader/baseband/unlocking/activate settings.
slarity @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:44AM
Thanks, thats good. People bash AT&T all the time but I pay $59.99 a month for 1000 anytime minutes and unlimited internet. Helluva a deal if you ask me.
Still the documentation for noobs on this hacking type stuff is very scarce and hard to find. Makes me leery for trying it.
Togarth @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:15AM
I take it this is an illegal hack tool?
as @ Apr 3rd 2008 8:29AM
No the dev team is not releasing any apple copyrighted material, the pwnage tool patches the official apple firmware. so basically this is not illegal hack tool
dj-kenpo @ Apr 3rd 2008 9:39AM
SO then... I can find the 2.0 firmware , and simply load it through this tool? no questions asked?
packy17 @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:28PM
should be able to, im not sure of where to find a copy of that tho....
Togarth @ Apr 3rd 2008 9:42AM
Hi I still unsure as to the purpose of this piece of SW?
No the dev team is not releasing any apple copyrighted material, the pwnage tool patches the official apple firmware.
Why don't Apple patch their own SW? and what exactly is this tool patching?
christopher.rodgers @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:11AM
Slarity:
I'd own a iPhone in a heart-beat if I could get that same 1000 minute plan for $59! I checked with AT&T and, even with my corporate (premier) discount, I can only get 450 voice minutes and data for $59. How did you get 1000 minutes? Was that a limited time promotion?
Let us all know..
Thanks!
Chris R.

If you don't know what this does, read the Wiki thoroughly.
If you still don't understand, don't use it.
PDubNYC @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:27AM
Your name truly suits you. The Wiki page does not provide much in the way of a description of what this does, and I don't care to read 15 pages just for a general overview.

packy17 @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:31PM
then watch the video they released. its not very hard to use... if youve used ziphone or a similar program in the past you shouldnt have a problem. the only halfwat confusing part of this program is loading custom firmwares because its never been done before. im trying to find 2.0 to get on my phone for exchange
James @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:09AM
Hi
I have one of the original iphones on v 1.0.2 and got it unlocked, its the AT&T American one and im in the UK. all is fine but I want to up-grade the firmware.
Has anyone tried doing this yet on the device listed above, if my iphone is already unlocked will I mess it up and brick it by using the software?
For those who need the 2.0 firmware to work with this , its on torrent's... google it.
Many thanks in advance for whoever can assist me.
James
UK
peter @ Apr 3rd 2008 11:06AM
Upgrade the firmware to 1.1.4 then run Ziphone to unlock and jailbreak it. You'll be fine. I just did it with the exact same model as you (I'm UK too)
Robert @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:10AM
I would like to use the additional features of the tool, but need images of the 3.9 bootloader and the 4.6 bootloader. Does anyone know where these are?
Togarth @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:22AM
its a phone hack! just as I said in the first place, talk about splitting hairs
bilzy @ Apr 3rd 2008 2:25PM
yes it's a hack. duh. but it's not illegal. it's a patching tool.
Togarth @ Apr 4th 2008 6:12AM
@Blitzy what's with duh? I was right sorry !
James @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:47AM
In relation to what this tool does, it allows you to put any software version on your iphone (for example the new 2.0 iphone software that is currently in Beta)... all unlocked iphones are not capable of updating there software like locked ones as this blocks the unlock tool. So for unlocked iphone users who use other SIMS this tool is fantastic achievment, if you are not unlocked and doing it all by the book the only thing you can now do is put the 2.0 software on it which is a beta.
David @ Apr 3rd 2008 11:47AM
I'm trying to download it but can't connect to the server: http://ipp.iphwn.org/PwnageTool_1.0.zip
Is the link correct? Has anyone else downloaded it?
iPwner @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:10PM
For details and direct download for PWNAGE, go to http://www.ipwner.net/ipwner/?p=8 . :)
iPTGuide @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:11PM
I've added a mirror at http://www.ipwner.net also for those who can't download from the current server. :)
Alex @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:22PM
Can I upgrade from 1.11 to 1.14 using this tool?
The instructions say only 1.13 and 1.14 are upgradeable. How do I ake the shift to any of those two firmwares?
