Although the iPhone Dev Team totally
punked us on April Fool's Day, they were still nice enough to give us an early hands-on (in person!) with a pre-release version of their new
Pwnage tool. Pwnage lets you load in any firmware you want, including patched firmwares not signed by Apple -- which could lead to everything from custom software distributions to totally new OSs ported over (like, say, Android or Linux). We did what most people are probably going to do, however: we took a brand new 8GB iPhone, unlocked it, and upgraded to the 2.0 firmware, while keeping it active on T-Mobile. It's not exactly a one-click process, but it's not all that hard either -- although we kind of cheated and had Dev Team members talking us through it. Peep the vid after the break, and check the read links in few hours to get your hands on Windows and Mac versions of the tool.
P.S. -Apologies for the blurry video for the first couple minutes, we didn't notice that our camera had gotten knocked out of macro mode. You're not missing much, trust us. Oh, and the only cuts are during loading bars and when we accidentally flashed a phone number and the iPhone's serial number -- we figured you didn't really want 20 minutes of listening to people sniffle during progress bars.

how can i get the beta 2.0 firmware? also, lets say i go on t mobile, am i paying of what it the deal?
I'd like to know this as well. I just put 2.0 on it and was wondering how I go about getting installer on it.
I can't get itunes to choose the other custom ipsw
hold down option when you click restore
That should bring up a choose file box.
honestly, why do we even need this? Why can't people just live with what the iphone HAS.
Did any one having problem when building the custom firmware? Whenever I tried to create one, it asked me for both baseband files (3.9 and 4.6) even though I did not check for baseband upgrade/downgrade.
off topic i know, but do you have to update the JAN08 ipod touch through itunes can you some how get your hands on the update and use the pwnage tool or is there another loader app/hack that this could be done with.
I have found pwn tool can also give you options too swap out system icons, for custom icons and system graphics, make sure when working with system graphics the file size stays the same ie, SO when you alter or replace an existing system graphic, if it was 26k, when you re-save it its 26k, this can be achieved in image ready web export, and altering the quality, don't change # of colors, color profile, file format or file name, also one more thing adobe adds a adobe marker, get rid of it with Hex Edit or by re-saving the file in preview don't save as, and make sure you back up the original file your replacing ,and replace your file in the directory. have fun
if im already using a jailbroken/inlocked iphone with 1.1.3, do i need to restore to factory settings and update to 1.1.4 before loading?
Hi,
I've just got my iphone and i was trying to unlock /jailbreak it with pwange tool. So i loaded the 1.1.4 firware into the pwnage tool. Then I clicked the iPwner button and the process started. However after a while itunes started loading and then i t gave me the text box saying that i need to unlock the sim (by entering the pin). But the screen is black. There is nothing i can do. I've tried enteringit into recovery doesnt work. I've tried holding down the power button and the home button, doesn't work.
Does anyone know what i could do to get it started again?
thanks a lot in advance
Chris
Is there a reason not to keep the 1.1.4 on the iPhone? As far as I understand, i can use the Pwnage tool to unlock/jailbreak/etc. my OTB 1.1.4 iPhone with a custom 1.1.4 and i would have a working iPhone... is that right? Cuz i want the iTunes store icon!
On last thing, do we have to change the icons to the dev team custom icons or I could just keep the original icons? Not that I don't like the icons is just I don't like the idea of a pinnaple showing as the boot up icon haha!
