Indonesian mosques to get superfast broadband at discount prices
Think you're getting a decent speed for a decent price on your broadband? Well think again. Kuala Lumpur-based Velchip has just announced plans to create a vast broadband-over-powerline network which will deliver 224Mbps to users in Indonesia for about RM5 (or $1.57) per month. The goal is to connect Mosques across the country, linking together 400,000 houses of worship over existing wiring and delivering service to about 60 million users. The $14 billion project will be rolled out over the next three years, with participation from US satellite company STM Networks. It all makes that $149.95 DOCSIS 3.0 introduction look pretty weak, now doesn't it?
Update: There was a bit of a mixup over whether this service was coming to Malaysia or Indonesia -- we've corrected the problem.

$50 a month for 1mbps...
I'd cry you a river, but someone in Indonesia would just come along and cry you an ocean for 1/2 the sadness.
Nick @ Apr 6th 2008 3:55PM

Jagannath A @ Apr 7th 2008 12:27AM
@arif
is yours unlimited connection ? and which ISP ? :D
WTF comment area is CHAOS lol
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Apr 7th 2008 2:35AM
Indian Bureaucracy makes improvements to infrastructure nearly impossible, hence the 512k connection for such a high price in a poor nation.
Sam Winter @ Apr 7th 2008 4:04AM
Oh whatever you moron. Obviously you have FIOS and know that it is better than what 99% of us have in America and even most parts of Europe.
Shit, I can't even get cable where I live. $100 a month for 3Mbit microwave link
Kurian @ Apr 7th 2008 5:17AM
I only pay 37.5$ a month for 512Kbps /w unlimited transfer in India.

Thats it. We only have one option.
Invade.
The Dude @ Apr 6th 2008 3:59PM
Its about as much a waste as if they had hooked it up to a monastery full of celibate orthodox monks. Porn and piracy torrents are out of the question (officially, at least)...so why bother? They could've effectively linked the mosques together at lower speeds and afforded to charge even less.
BadKen @ Apr 6th 2008 4:02PM
But they have an average Income of about 4500$/year.
Do the math.
ScooterDe @ Apr 6th 2008 4:40PM
precisely. It would take 1800 years to return the investment, if it truly cost $14bn and only the 400,000 mosques were paying. This sounds like a national rollout, starting with mosques - probably at a heavy discount - and then selling through to worshipers in order to make economic sense.
Inugami @ Apr 6th 2008 4:04PM
Makes me want to rethink where i live.
Tony @ Apr 6th 2008 4:15PM
You would move just for cheaper and faster Internet?
You need to rethink your priorities.

harder, better, faster, stronger internet. totally worth the move.

therealist @ Apr 6th 2008 4:04PM
why do white people call others terrorists? They did a crazy amount of killing, most genocides were done by whites.
Ghen @ Apr 6th 2008 4:08PM
Everyone kills everyone else. its not a race issue, its a societal issue.
The Dude @ Apr 6th 2008 4:19PM
Thats highly improbable, dude. If you believe in race, which is nothing but a relative social construct, whites are outnumbered by races considered non-white. Those non-white races have been bickering with each other along racial lines as well during periods of their history. Hence the mathematical improbability of genocides being perpetrated mostly by whites. Ethnicity may exist but race sure as fuck is bull shit. And it ain't just whitey doing the terrorist labeling. I just read a news article about the Sri Lankan President calling an assassination by the LTTE "terrorist brutality." So there you have it.
John @ Apr 6th 2008 4:47PM
The Dude,
Race isn't a social construct. It's a set of physical characteristics. Unless you're on of those people that thinks it's offensive to call a person black or white. Then you're just full of shit.

This graphic from National Geographic shows that it is hardly "white people". Granted it is just the 20th century, but I'm sure the trend would remain in other eras.
You need an education. A little less racism would be nice too.

The Dude @ Apr 6th 2008 6:46PM
@John:
If anyone's full of shit it's you with that non-sequitur. If race wasn't a social construct, then the requisites that assign you into a particular race would be universal and resistant to time. Are you going to argue that they are? When the most glaring examples contrary to that exist within America itself? When Southern and Eastern Europeans weren't accepted as white in America in previous centuries and they generally are today? When "mulatto" used to be a racial category in America before one drop of African blood made you unequivocally black? Not to mention to varying standards for race across the world.
If anyone's full of shit, it's you. Race isn't consistent, it isn't universal, it isn't worth the attention it's given. It ranks down there with religion.
crscheid @ Apr 7th 2008 12:24AM
And if we're talking about genocides as in when the term was coined, around 1920-something, hardly any genocides have been perpetrated by Whites at all, namely three i can think of: Hitler and the Jews, Stalin and the Ukrainians, which people still argue over weather or not it was a Genocide, and the more recent ethnic cleanings in the Balkans. This isn't exactly "most" compared to the huge number of genocides in Africa.
Think before you speak.
Jordan @ Apr 7th 2008 12:37AM

HOW IS THIS RELEVANT.

And this has an ASTOUNDING amount of relevancy with the article. Congratulations on achieving a huge feat of stereotyping and display of idiocy on something completely unrelated to the topic at hand.
Stetson @ Apr 6th 2008 4:10PM
I'd imagine that the high bandwidth is to allow many users to share the connection, not so that a few people can have super fast downloads.
YT @ Apr 6th 2008 4:10PM
from the link provided, it seems that it is the Kuala Lumpur based Velchip providing their client in Indonesia for the service. The service itself is not deployed in Malaysia. We're still having slow and expensive broadband here.

"So they can get their e-fatwas out without getting off the phone!"
And to Joshua, or whoever it was that deleted my comment, yes there are e-fatwas, you re!arded fuk.
Saad Rabia @ Apr 6th 2008 6:38PM
Quik!, This Internet service is going to be installed within the Mosques for a big main reason: There are a lot of mosques around and using them as wireless connection hot spot towers is the smartest idea I can think of in an Islamic country! It is even better than the Google project where they will fly balloons that are holding wireless routers in them!
I live in the UAE and Mosques are spread in every block and street, so using them as hot spot towers could be very useful and organized. No need to build towers by telecommunication companies after all, plus that Mosques are hardly to be demolished whatever was the reason, except if there is something against the Islamic rules, which almost never happened in my life time, meaning that using them as tower hot spots will assure long time availability and easier maintenance and care.
Also, as a Muslim, this is one of the greatest ways to honer the house where we pray and worship Allah, it is some kind of a motivational act for youngsters to go and spend some time inside a Mosque, which is possible and most welcomed in Islam. :)
Adeel @ Apr 7th 2008 8:21AM
Think of Mosques like Mobile Phones. 10 years ago you'd be lucky enough to get a good half an hour of talk time. Then as time past, mobile phones started getting diffrent features like Cameras MP3 play back ect.
So just like that Mosques are becoming more multi-purpose because its the place that practicly everyone goes to in the community.

In all fairness to you, you may have inadvertently posted here instead of (insert whatever brainfuck conservative-bashing website you usually frequent).
Conservatives are as much racists as Muslims are terrorists (hint hint, 99.99% of us aren't racist, much as I'm sure 99.99% of Muslims aren't terrorists). Way to go with meeting a sweeping generalization with your own sweeping generalization, asshat.
Craig B. @ Apr 6th 2008 4:17PM
Wow. I just don't know what to say. I really can't understand how a racially and nationality charged reaction applies. The negative comments so far are oriented towards religion (ya know, Chechnya and the Balkans have Muslims, too), not race. And how do you know where the posters are from or their race? What we have here is proof that one person's ignorance against another peron's ignorance leaves us with nothing more than a pair of idiots.
Dave @ Apr 6th 2008 5:31PM
Yes but the last time I checked Islamic Militant Chechens were the ones in Russia blowing up things and holding opera houses hostage, as well as Islamic African Militants in Darfur committing genocide, as well as the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, and the Basque Sepratists in Spain...all Militant Islamic groups. So, if you are asking where the large amount of bigotry comes from, it's from these groups that for the most part I feel pervert Islam away from its true teachings.
Yes people are ignorant many times, but at the same time when Islamic groups are the only ones across the world beheading people on video (Daniel Pearl) and claiming responsibility for blowing up buses, planes, and buildings, THAT is where the implied bigotry comes from.
