CERN creates a new super-fast internet, invites tons of people to a deathmatch
Apparently, when CERN isn't colliding particles (and ripping massive holes in the space-time continuum), it's busy working on a new "internet" which will be 10,000 times faster than our current version. The project -- known as "the grid" -- is built atop completely fiber optic networks, and utilizes modern routing centers. By keeping traffic out of our current phone and data systems, the researchers have been able to achieve speeds heretofore unseen on previous networks. The system connects from CERN to 11 centers around the globe, and will be switched on when the Large Hadron Collider is activated, on what the group is calling "Red Button Day." Project heads believe a network with this speed will lead to all sorts of futuristic innovations -- like true cloud computing, holographic video conferencing, and really, really fast pirating of the entire Nightmare on Elm Street series.

On red button day the system was turned on 3 days later skynet became self aware. Two days later the missiles were launched...
Does it have a touch screen???
Perhaps I've seen the Matrix and Terminator movies too many times but I am afraid of something called "Red Button Day".
Bring it on! as long as Comcast doesn't have access to it i don't really give a shit if it rips a hole through the space time continuum. Real time Pr0n asses and remote computer access for the masses! =] Oh and we could plug into the matrix too...
That's quite an image. Who new that robots had an anus?
Well I guess we're about 10,000 times faster than the internet was about 10 years ago. A faster internet would mean less power/time needed by the data centers for upload download. So we'll save power - whist being sucked into oblivion by the particle accelerator
They're turning this on Summer 2008?! That's 3 f*kin months from now!
Shit!
What happened to them doing this in 2012?
Damn, I thought that I had more time to get off this planet.
I once ran into Ensign Kim "Garret Wong".
I made fun of him and he kicked my ass. Sharing is caring.
@ Chris:
that 10K RPM Raptor wouldn't happen to be perpendicular would it? The new Seagates (while obviously not 3gb/s) are on par with, if not faster even though they are 7,200 RPM. I get the point you are trying to make, as I hope you get mine. Faster hard drives come out as demand grows.
I just cant wait for the black hole. Remind me to shoot myself before the gravity gets ahold of me.
And how are you supposed to know?
making black holes is one thing, but will it allow me to run doom?
So, this is how they explain how safe this is?
"Accelerators recreate the natural phenomena of cosmic rays under controlled laboratory conditions. Cosmic rays are particles produced in outer space in events such as supernovae or the formation of black holes, during which they can be accelerated to energies far exceeding those of the LHC. Cosmic rays travel throughout the Universe, and have been bombarding the Earth's atmosphere continually since its formation 4.5 billion years ago. Despite the impressive power of the LHC in comparison with other accelerators, the energies produced in its collisions are greatly exceeded by those found in some cosmic rays. Since the much higher-energy collisions provided by Nature for billions of years have not harmed the Earth, there is no reason to think that any phenomenon produced by the LHC will do so."
Anyone else wondering how the hell they can really make anyone believe that? First off, the magnetic field of our planet is what protects us from these cosmic rays, and when that fails (it's rare, but does happen) planes fall out of the sky, and cities go into blackout. Now, imagine even a fraction of that energy being CREATED inside of that protective "magnetosphere".
They've got to do better than that to make me really, 100% believe that this is completely safe.
Mr. Fantastic would have to disagree with you.
its 50-150 meters underground. Thats more than plenty to stop any particle escaping, a couple of meters is enough for the job. Its so deep to prevent far more energetic particles from space from interfering with the experiments
Wtf, comment system!?! Argh.
damn comment system..
If it all goes wrong, will the Director get tragically but powerfully fused to the prosthetic control system? Will Spiderman be available to shut down the runaway systems?
You know, I have no idea, but judging from the video I would say it looks more like mirrors to me.
However there also is a company, Musion Eyeliner, that does huge holographic projections for live concerts and stages. I believe they did it for a Gorillaz show during some sort of MTV awards.
Here ya go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRViE4N-u5Y
So when does this system become self aware?
here it comes, all our scifi dreams come true.
No I would expect the writing I the red button tol be "Don't Panic".
In large, friendly letters, right?
I think there's a bit of context that has not been mentioned in the article: The CERN is the place the WEB was born, remember a guy called Tim Berners-Lee?
This? This fancy geegaw does *nothing* but convert MacGuyvers into O'Neils...
O'Neill with 2 'l's
Thanks ED; I've got got terrible spelling (think 'Tori' bad) but what the 'L'!
It's time to choose Mr. Freeman...
CERN invents new internet , invites all to a massive deathmatch: Yeah real bloody shame they have the universe's biggest B.F.G. (As far as we know anyway...)
And yeah here comes the barrage of "Can it play DOOM?, will it blend, overlortds ect., will it bring back the dead?,Resonance cascade, and a thousand other stupid questions/memes/naysayers...
Those gusy are amazing... I just went yesterday there to see the inside of LHC... if they won't destroy the universe creating a stable black hole, they're gonna make me proud to be swiss :D
just quoting myself to say that i personally spoke with one of cern guys involved in the LHC, he told me it's perfectly safe. I wont write down the entire story, but i was really convincing. And the folks in honolulu or whatever can sue as much as they can... we're not in the USA... their law isn't vaid here :D
"heretofore" -- heretofore? Who wrote this article, Benjamin Franklin?
I'm going to apply to CERN now. Thanks for the stock hint, too!
On another note, the world has to end sometime; wouldn't you rather be there and get excited about it?
I've always wanted to see a black hole up-close in-person, but the travel time has always created logistical issues. They are geniuses for coming up with the idea of bringing black holes to us! Now all we need to do is make a capsule so that we can travel through the space-time tunnel created by it and live for a second or two so that we can see the other side. Then whoever is in the capsule can take video and upload it on The Grid to viewers at home--oh, that's right, no one will be left. Well, at least a few people will be able to experience something interesting before possibly being shot back out into oblivion in a different space that is all white instead of black but is otherwise empty.
We will use this weapon against the war on terror! It will be called intergalactic gun and the beastie boys will rap about the war!
Ren & Stimpy would be proud.
SEE! TUBES!
@Tony: Wow, I honestly don't know whether to click the green plus or red minus on this one--or perhaps we need a fourth yellow "OMG Check Out The Loony" icon.
Well, if we get warped into another dimension or something, I am not going to pay my taxes anymore - screw that! I'm done!
Global communications, central computer, superfast, SkyNet anyone?
I, for one, welcome our new hyperspace borne lords on this Judgeme... err... Red Button Day.
i doubt any change will come any time soon though, we are still pretty primitive in terms of using the fiber optic network.... we'll be stuck with electrical network equipments for a while...
About the tiny black hole theories, I read somewhere that one could occur inside your brain for a fraction of a second. That might explain my memory loss.
