Thin is in: LG shares a glimpse of its 5 megapixel hottie phone
Great news, Mr. and Mrs. Tighty Pants: carrying five megapixels in your pocket is about to become a little less obvious! The latest member of LG's storied Black Label line -- other alumni being the Chocolate and the Shine -- is starting to break cover, and for what the slider might lack in sheer visual distinction, it makes up in technical prowess. The as-yet-unnamed slider promises to be the thinnest 5 megapixel cameraphone in the world when it launches, featuring a reinforced glass touchscreen up front (just a little Glimmer-esque, if you ask us) and a shell constructed from carbon fiber. Other than that, LG's being a little stingy with details at this point, saying that it'll unveil the handset's name later this month -- hopefully along with pricing and a full spec sheet. The phone will hit Europe first with a number of other launches across the globe thereafter, finally hitting LG's own South Korea in the second half.

"what the slider might lack in sheer visual distinction"
Uh, what?
Tony @ Apr 7th 2008 2:57AM
The author is criticizing the LG's appearance for being similar to that of the Glimmer. Hence the link to the Glimmer.
Also, looks like the reply button is fixed!

They're both thin rectangular things with buttons, is what he's trying to say. Seriously though, yet another sweet phone from LG! Want!
Ellianth @ Apr 7th 2008 2:05AM
I wonder what the battery life is like. I was not too pleased with the life of my TG800.
Lazerface @ Apr 7th 2008 2:07AM
nice phone.
In other news, I'm starting a petition to get Engadget to fix its reply system. If you do not know yet, the reply button has been broken for the past few days. It has caused a lot of confusion and emotional grief for all those caught in this tragedy.
To sign the petition, click on the time stamp below my username to actually reply to me. Hopefully, we can bring greater awareness to this situation.
Signed,
A Concerned Commentor

...it's broken?
Quikboy @ Apr 7th 2008 2:47AM
I think they actually just fixed it.
I clicked on your reply button, and I automatically noticed the "replying to Lazerface" in blue above the comment input box.
About time Engadget.

This has to be the most successful petition ever!

I just hope its available in the US.
ChaosEntity @ Apr 7th 2008 2:46AM
Seconded.
This one's nicer than the viewty. Hopefully it'll have a better (and pronounceable) name too.
gad get @ Apr 7th 2008 5:10AM
Viewty isn't difficult to pronounce.
geekazine @ Apr 7th 2008 3:01AM
I like slider phones, but the keypads seem to be a little bit more awkward to type with. Those buttons look smaller than most.
Wonder what a the MP picture would look like. If that's the flash above the lens, it probably won't be that great of quality in low light situations.
Zorque @ Apr 7th 2008 3:08AM
WANT
As long as there's an GSM verson, at least.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Apr 7th 2008 5:19AM
I just spalooged in my pants.
Carbonize @ Apr 7th 2008 5:37AM
I have had several LG phones in the past and whilst they have all looked pretty and been technically powerful they tend to either have bugs or be missing features. Usually this wouldn't be a problem but once LG starts shipping a phone it doesn't seem to care about it any more. I have yet to hear of a firmware update for an LG phone and yet other manufacturers now build this in as a feature.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Apr 7th 2008 8:41AM
Hopefully LG can catch up with the times on the firmware issue.
Wobbly @ Apr 7th 2008 9:14AM
My CU500 had an over-the-air firmware update once, and it did correct some issues. However it could've used another update. Nokia is pretty good about firmware updates, but only regarding the Nseries
jperry @ Apr 7th 2008 11:20AM
Uh...I've had two updates in firmware for by Voyager since I bought it when it came out in November...
Carbonize @ Apr 7th 2008 11:29AM
The Shine had a major bug where if you removed a ringtone from MP3 playlist it would not play that ringtone if you assigned it to calls. Informed LG and got generic "passed on to R&D" email. Never heard anything from them again. I know a few people have emailed about bugs in the LG Viewty and received same generic reply.
master_sword @ Apr 7th 2008 7:57AM
this looks sweet! i hope it will work on verizon though...
applefan @ Apr 7th 2008 8:04AM
Hotness!
Mobius_1 @ Apr 7th 2008 8:19AM
Black Label? Does it have a "Don't drink and drive" sticker on the back?
Nice phone though, do want
gaforces @ Apr 7th 2008 8:24AM
Following their naming conventions, it will be the Licorice.
PS3guy @ Apr 7th 2008 9:50AM
No touch screen no thanks I'll pass
Wormbolt @ Apr 7th 2008 9:59AM
Are you passing on reading too?
PS3guy @ Apr 7th 2008 10:06AM
I mean Multi Touch.
Big Al @ Apr 7th 2008 10:40AM
Wait, why is Korea the last to get this phone?
I hope the Korean version has DMB.
absurdio @ Apr 7th 2008 11:31AM
You hope the Korean version... has... dave matthews band? Gosh. That's an odd thing to look for in a phone. Those Koreans. Always lovin' Dave Matthews and/or his band.
...god, i'm tired.
absurdio @ Apr 7th 2008 11:33AM
Also: It looks significantly less broken than my horrible-ass RAZR. I'll take it.
tuna @ Apr 7th 2008 1:54PM
Looks nice, but will the UI suck?
BobbySoprano @ Apr 7th 2008 2:27PM
I'm not holding my breath for it to debut on Verizon.
Chris Nicholls @ Apr 10th 2008 11:59PM
Okay, nice looking phone, but knowing LG, the camera will be crap, the phone will fall apart very quickly and the software will have problems. God knows the Viewty was a pile of dung.
