Toshiba to showcase "world's smallest HDTV camera" at NAB
Granted, Toshiba Imaging's IK-HD1 3CCD HDTV Camera may not matter much to the consumer as-is, but we're all about the progress. Ready to make its grand, er, wee entrance at NAB Show later this month, the aforementioned unit touts the planet's "smallest" HD camera head (1.6-inches; 2.3-ounces), which should give program producers in tight spots one less reason to not capture content in high-def. In that vein, Tosh even notes that its ability to capture at 1,920 x 1,080 at 30fps makes it "highly suitable for reality TV (you getting this, producers?), specialty broadcast, sports, news and commercials." We know, this totally opens the door for an HD version of Punk'd, but hey, you can't win 'em all.

Put one of these on one of camera-glasses things from earlier today ( http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/07/remote-control-spy-glasses-offer-built-in-camera-music-playback/ ) and you might have something
- Yeah, but then, wouldn't it only record like 5 minutes of video?
- That's just the camera itself, right? So how big is it once we put batteries, memory, and a microphone? If I were to hook up a harddrive to the camera, it'd ruin the purpose. Now pack it with a 32GB SD card...
That would be a face shield now.
How 'bout putting one of these in a new mobile phone?
Sure it would be the approximate size of my head, and have only the capacity to record 10 minutes of footage but....
....
I can't remember where I was going with this...
...and opens the door for High-Def peepin' Tom's!
Wooot.....?
that's what I was about to say when he said reality tv.
I don't know about that new fangled rubick's cube lookin' thing, but I'll take that feather, paperclip and ruler!
well in fact, Toshiba employed MacGuyver to build the camera OUT of a feather, paperclip and ruler. The picture is something of a design blueprint.
I leave for Vegas in the morning. Can't wait to see this thing in the flesh. Woot.
I think this would be perfect for shows like Deadliest Catch where they try to put cameras in precarious positions.
How many nm process size?
130?
90?
65?
I love how they include the feather like all feathers are the same, and small in size.
Ruler=small
Feather=light weight
Paperclip=versitile
It's subtle marketing speak. They have limited poster space and almost non-existant consumer attention span so they take a photo of the camera, and include other objects with characteristics they want you to associate with that camera.
Reality TV?? No no no. I'm going to use it to tape one night stands :)
You're posting comments on a tech blog. So probably not.
Now spy in HD
Toshiba can now transfer all that mini HD footage onto Blu Ray! Yea!
That's just the camera head.
There will be a multicore cable back to a big control box containing most of the electronics.
Then you have to cable out to a recorder and also to a monitor so you can frame the shot.
Similar cameras have been out for like 10 years e.g. JVC make one very similar even in size.
The buzz will be if the image quality is better than existing cameras.
A couple of millimeters in size difference isn't really big news.
