It appears that Nokia is readying its
official response to the iPhone, a project grossly codenamed "Tube" that will feature a
touch interface. The new handset -- which is said to closely resemble Apple's device (see above, we assume) -- was shown during a slideshow at the Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City, California. The slide demonstrated the phone's UI, including a promotional shot featuring
Shrek The Third. Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia, believes that the company can compete for the iPhone's marketshare, though the phone-maker hasn't set a
street date for the device. Apple has sold more than 4 million units since the iPhone's launch, but Libretto smugly noted that, "We've done that [volume] since we've had dinner on Friday," (though he failed to mention that it was 4 million low-end candybar handsets). He then put on a monocle, puffed on a Cuban cigar, and knocked back a tall glass of Cristal while chortling, "Oh, I do say!"

"low end candy bar phones"? nokia has sold far more high-end phones but not in america because the only high-end phones americans know are the iphone and blackberrys. I have the iphone and i sold it and bought a nokia n93i. i guess everyone has for gotten about the ground breaking cellphones by nokia that changed the cell phone world.. for me, the iphone looks good and all but its just a hole in the wall compared to the other high-end nokias i've used. it even lacks the features of the nokia 6600, nokia 7610, and nokia 6230 which were launched over 5 years ago. yes, 5 years ago, those phones will make the iphones functions look like a rotary phone, no offence. But i must say, the iphone is one of, if not the most beautiful and sexy cellphone i have ever used. It is beautiful! no one cant doubt that. but apple needs to update its features

Wow there's some hard bias here. Nokia has sold more N95's than Apple iphones and Nokia has own prodcuts competing against it own like N82.
Either the writer is hard Apple fan or it's just a joke or a plan to get more comments ;)
While Nokia gets it biggest profits form emergin makrets it's not a suprise when the biggest makrket is there....and it's hard for Nokia to do any better in smartphones segment when symbia has 75% of all the smartphone market if there would be more smartphones maybe they could sell more N series and E series phone in a week compared to iphone =D
and see how many times i can write markets wrong =D

Just wanna say that i dont hate Apple or iphone at all. After all the hype i bought ipod touch and it really was as good as the hype indicated, but some of here are really getting wrong picture living in NA because of non existant Nokia and SE there. There wasent any hype on iphone when it came and Nokia's TS will probally be taken ironically as the first cool(non business) TS phone when it comes out and probally 10x more marketed here compared to iphone.
Nokia really has huge brand power in Europe and Asia as the market share tells and i dont believe Apple was looing anything more than what they have achieved now. After they start to create portfolios for phones they might really attack to this market, but really Apple isnt about that and it's also one of it's strongest points because Nokia really has hard time to make phones so they wouldnt be competing with their own phones especially with smartphones. It's always one feature missing or different form factor or what ever.
If it was not for the iPhone this argument would not even take place. It is the iPhone people of the masses want. But I would agree that Nokia has great stuff too. I like the upcoming n96, but I love my iPhone more. iPhone will have more than just iTunes in it's corner, it will have the platform everyone will want. It will soon be all about the platform. With the SDK, 3G, and god only knows what else coming, Apple will crush all others. Sure there will always be alternatives. Creative still sells MP3 players. Lets stop bullshiting ourselves in thinking that the mass market is nothing more than a bunch of dorks that read Engadget. iPhone is still growing like a weed. That's the real scoop. Come on people!
p.s. I love when some dork gets all uppity that Apple(or who ever) will not get their money as if that sale is gonna bankrupt them. Get real.
For those who whine about iTunes and the iTS and misguidedly seem to think that it's a US only phenomenon; iTunes is the number one music download site in EVERY country it is available.
Having owned several Nokia phones since 1995, after getting my hands on an iPhone, I can say without shame or fanboyism that Nokia phones generally suck. This new phone's weakness against the iPhone is not the hardware or the features; it's the OS. Anyone who has honestly compared Symbian or Windows Mobile to Mobile OSX knows that the iPhone OS is superior, and with the forthcoming 2.0 firmware it will only get better.

Nokia ought to be ashamed of themselves. Instead of fixing all these things we want in the n810, they're going for mass knock off productions. That's backward moving Nokia, backward! And kinda pathetic.

Here's hoping Nokia create what the iPhone SHOULD have been. I'm saying this as a rabid Apple fanboy, even.
People always focus on the hardware with the iPhone.
Sure the hardware is very nice, but it's all about the navigation.
All mobile phones have terrible user interfaces.
The iPhone is the first phone to address that people want their phone to be intuitive and easy to use.
The Nokia will be crap as it will just be fancy hardware with a ridiculous Nokia user interface.
So sad that Nokia have to copy Apple and can't come up with their own design.
It's so funny, such a big mobile company as Nokia nows tries to imitate the iPhone after the great success they never had with one single model. iPhone Vs Nokia, sounds really funny to me :D
Although they're on their way to make some good imitation, I think they didn't understood a word about what IS an iPhone. Weel, I already knew this from the first time I tried to browse the internet in a N95 (jesus.)
Mike V, that's exactly the point in my humble opinion. Using a Nokia is frankly annoying. A lot of technology that no one is really 'enjoying' when in use.
if nokia put Trolltech QT on it i buy this phone.
This will hardly be Nokias 'flagship' phone. Unlike apples.

ya, the iphone is a ripoff of the LG prada... why is everyone so infatuated with apple? anyways, here's a cool d800i hiphone "clone" for a lot less than the iphone and this nokia one as well...
