Some seven months after AMD first tooted its horn about creating the "
world's most advanced x86 CPU," the quad-core Opteron is finally shipping. Effective today, consumers eager to wrap their brains around all that purported power can find the chips residing in a variety of HP machines (read: servers) as well as in systems from other "distributors, system integrators and specialized OEMs." Unfortunately, little is said about the widespread availability of the CPU beyond that, but at least it's getting out the door in one way or another, right?

Who cares?
Intel FTW!
IT-Accountant @ Apr 9th 2008 9:28AM
FYI, Stevie, AMD deserves much of the credit for the current crop of successful Intel processors. They made dual-core processors mainstream, pioneered consumer 64-bit processing, and forced Intel to step up their game. I personally hope AMD keeps the market competitive.

@ IT-Accountant
I know, I'm just messin'. Truth be told, I've been a die-hard AMD fan for years, and it makes me sad that they're not more neck-and-neck with Intel. As much as I hate to buy Intel, I'm gonna go with whichever processor gives the best price/performance ratio, and lately that's been Intel.
C'mon AMD, I haven't lost faith...
...yet.
Rob @ Apr 9th 2008 9:29AM
Actually, a lot of people care. If it wasn't for AMD, Intel would've been dragging its feet and sticking it to us with high prices. And the same thing with AMD regarding Intel. It's all about competition.
The raVen Wing @ Apr 14th 2008 1:34PM
I agree. In my opinion Intel is so far ahead of AMD they don't have a chance in hell in getting any market share back. They did however wake the sleeping giant. I hope they do well even though I think their products are garbage. The key reason is that competation is the key in consumers getting better products. If AMD were to fold then It is not likely that Intel would keep up their significant lead and thus provide a better computing future for us all. On another note has anyone read anything on Inte's new Atom processor? I really think this processor in particular will really change things for portable devices everywhere and will make ARM a thing of the past.
phanbouy @ Apr 9th 2008 2:37PM
no raVen, we haven't seen anything on the Atom at engadget. absolutely nothing at all.
Frank @ Apr 9th 2008 9:40AM
@Stevie Wonder: It's funny how everyone forgets that AMD was dominating the market by releasing processor after processor that beat Intel chips in performance AND price. Not to mention their overclock abilities. Intel has merely learned from AMD and it taking back the market.
It is all part of a large scale sinusoidal wave that the companies decided on years ago. It's a conspiracy.
Kurian @ Apr 9th 2008 11:34AM
AMD's +ve cycle of the wave wasnt as high as Intel's is right now.
fazny zavahir @ Apr 9th 2008 9:42AM
Competition is good for everyone. fazny zavahir
tom @ Apr 9th 2008 9:51AM
Not sure if it just me, i find the logo design for AMD Opteron and Phenom look better than intel's c2d and centrino. =)
RonV @ Apr 9th 2008 9:53AM
Like I buy a CPU based on the logo? But I know a guy that purchased a laptop because it had that "Fish" screen saver running.
MjW @ Apr 9th 2008 10:05AM
Hahahha that is definitely possible.
I have an Intel quad but I hope AMD comes back up and be even more competitive than it is now. The more hard fight AMD and Intel give the better CPUs in better prices we will get.
tom @ Apr 9th 2008 10:00AM
or buying a computer with the logo of a half eaten fruit.
jblock @ Apr 9th 2008 10:07AM
While I like Intel more, I agree about competition. Just look at their markup on the Atom processor now that AMD is on the ropes. And who is their biggest competitor in that market, VIA? :(
Ubuntu 7.10 WindowsXP @ Apr 9th 2008 10:23AM
I honestly think that most of AMD's problem was annoucing things before they needed the attention. Then releasing a chip with an error in it. I had never heard of that before last year. Granted it may have happened, I just didn't know that could happen. but now the 9x50 chips are out and the error is gone. While AMD is still having trouble competing with Intel on the CPU front, I think they are doing a great job in other areas.
I honestly believe that the things they are doing with 780G chipset/gpu, AMD Fusion, and CrossfireX will once again chance the market drastically. In fact, the last few months have been all about AMD/ATI stealing the low to mid range market (where 85% of customers are) away from Nvidia with better products. Nvidia is still a powerhouse, but ATI has them breaking their release rules and releasing sub par products.
This will be a very interesting year of market power stuggles and AMD is far from out of the fight.
Magallanes @ Apr 9th 2008 12:24PM
Intel kick ass for high-end customers that can spend a lot of money on a extreme cpu but for the rest of customers, AMD will give the best performance/price ratio, at least for desktop.
z0phi3l @ Apr 9th 2008 5:36PM
@Magallanes
Intel is currently beating AMD in the Price/Performance bracket too
AMD need to get their act together, release a REAL competitor to the Quads and maybe they will regain what they've lost sine wasting their money on ATI.
Ubuntu 7.10 WindowsXP @ Apr 9th 2008 11:32PM
They are only beating them on the CPU front. The best price/performance in chipsets still goes to AMD
kal326 @ Apr 9th 2008 11:15AM
A lot to little and a lot to late. Intel has been pushing the 45nm refreshed Xeons since last November. Given the fact that the Opterons are only clocked up to 2.5Ghz, they are going to get spanked in performance. AMD needs to step it up or we are going to continue to see the 4 month window of product anouncement to product availability from Intel like the 9x50 series.
shawnmos @ Apr 9th 2008 12:52PM
How does this compare to what Intel currently has (both speed wise and price wise)?
jmiday @ Apr 9th 2008 2:22PM
here ya go lazy

chris @ Apr 9th 2008 1:00PM
If the Opteron lives up to their expectations, it'll create a another ball game. They took their time but now I'm eager to see the stats on this mother and how it will eventually stand up to Intel Penryn
Frank @ Apr 9th 2008 2:08PM
Who cares, it's all relative..
boe @ Apr 9th 2008 11:24PM
Thank goodness. Maybe now I can get one of those intel Q9550 that were released in January and haven't been available for months - probably because of a lack of competition.
88-ie @ May 23rd 2008 2:07AM
NEW INTEL CPU'S ARE INNEFICIENT
simple, they drain you $100's more on your yearly
electric bill, and theyre horrible for global warming.
The lowest TDP intel cpu is 65 watts, via can make desktop
cpus that consume as little as 1 watt@ 500mhz wich
is fast enough for any moNster graphics game given you have a fast
drive, since the HDD and pagefile determines
SMOOTHNESS OF PLAY .
via kicks intels ass on most fronts especially in Efficiency and quality.heat is what burns cpu clocks and cooks people, a room heater. high frequency and high wattage is a total waste of Efficiency perfomance and a waste of your money on your power bill and plus, when your cpus is over 40 watts you need a loud fan that squeals, like a hairdryer, this isnt crafty cpu construction, its powerwasting and microwave central room heating! and, its an environmental enemy, no computer processor should should have a higher TDP than 12 to 15 watts under full load and should all be small form factor or else its an inneficient
power and money waster.
right now intel crystal processors are
microwave room heaters that drain your
power bill over $100s of dollars yearly.
intel chips and asus boards's really need to lower
their useless money wasting power over-consumption
and should really look to via for creative inspiration
on efficiency and performance.
