iPhone contacts search and meeting invite revealed
Remember that sweet little magnifying glass from the iPhone SDK demo? Well apparently we all weren't having a shared hallucination -- it's in the enterprise version of firmware 2.0. Thanks to a tipster, we've now got shots of the search bar clearly hanging out at the top of the contacts list. While we're unraveling mysteries, you'll be happy to know that the little drawer button -- which did nothing in the regular old firmware we had -- is actually a meeting invitations folder, which displays the number of requests just like the SMS and mail icons. Other changes? Enterprise users don't get the app store or iTunes store icons. Boo. Check out the gallery below to see just exactly what we're talking about. Now, on to finding JFK's real killer!

I'm jumping the gun but... I better not have to pay extra for enterprise features!
Sorry. this is Apple we are talking about here...
iPhone = cash cow... anything extra will cost extra, even if the extra means less than what you already have.
@ james,
Don't confuse utilities that are common in the Enterprise with a version of the iPhone designed for the Enterprise. Corporations may want to have to have tighter control over their devices than the consumer wants. The Enterprise certificate of the SDK allows comapnies to create and distribute apps that are only available in-house, not a free for all on the App Store, and the Enterprise version of the iPhone firmware "should" let them control what features are used. Some could be anal enough to not let you use the iPod or You Tube apps on the device.
Will we regular Joes get a stand-alone Contacts app?
It's probable.
It's probable.
So if i set up Exchange Active sync I cannot access the app store or iTunes store????
There is no way that can be in the final release. That would be something that is set by the IT department of the Enterprise. If I run my own company I want BOTH. They simply have nothing to do with each other. If this is true then I hope Apple and Microsoft go out of business by a freak meteor shower or something.
When you have a black berry, you can still install applications even if you are connected to a BES, unless your IT department prevents it.
Like I said before, the iTunes and Appstore icons have probably just been moved to a new home screen page.
So let me understand (forgive my lack of ) this phone has a govenor on it to keep users (other than the owner) from accessing the extra cost features? Sounds like a safety feature in my crowd.
i think its ridiculous to say they aren't getting itunes store, and app store icons... you've neglected to see the 3 dots at the bottom. They could easily be moved to homescreen 2 or 3...
Engadget: WTF? Apple produces a very mundane software update for a product that's been available for close to a year and it's somehow worth an article? Name another company that gets that kind of free publicity.
Hey look! LG released new firmware that slightly improves the clarity of downloaded ringtones on the VX2345PRt952 phone from last year!! Quick, to the presses!
Because iPhone has alot of advanced functionality, also the stuff it does that other phones do, it does it better.
Yes it does lack some of the basics, everyone wants to know when all the features that are missing are added.
Um, Engadget has and article titled "Rock Band Mushroom Drum Pads: nearly too awesome to hit" and you are complaining about new screenshots to the latest release of the iPhone software? Be like me, I didn't read the Mushroom Pads article, so why don't you stay out of this forum.
will the search feature only be available to enterprise version of 2.0? Or will it be a general update for all iPhone users? It better be for ALL!!!!
Thank god they put the contacts out on the home screen. That is one of the very few things that irritates me about my iPhone, hiding the contacts in the phone app simply sucks.
Umm... have the people that write the iPhone articles on Engadget even used one? In the posted images there are two other pages of homescreen icons (as seen by the small circles at the bottom). What are the odds that the App store and iTunes (along with 20 or more other apps) are on one of those screens? I would say about 100%.
Sheesh.
Here's hoping that contact search feature isn't reserved for only the Enterprise edition (hmm, will it boldly go where no iPhone has gone before?). It's not just enterprise users who have many, many contacts in their phones.
Why is it that features other phones have had for years is breaking news when the crippled iPhone gets it?
I have a filter for that text... never use gaussian blur. It can be undone (to a certain extent).
Hell, I can read some of it right now.

Good job Baluki, why don't you disrespect the privacy of whatever nice fellow had the decency to violate his or her NDA with Apple to provide you with cool news about the iPhone. Why the hell would you possibly rat them out? That's just plain stupid.
Think you will be able to view other people's calendars and/or busy information?
I'm using the enterprise beta for my university. This search feature is excellent. Actually, on the earlier seed of the beta, the side bar seeking by first letter didn't work... and I have 300 contacts :-/ made finding people a pain in the ass. But even better, this search feature works on Active Directory!!!! I can actually do a lookup on the entire campus and find people's phone numbers and emails (well, phone nuymbers for faculty, but still). This feature works inside Mail as well. This new firmware is going to be truly great.
P.S. It took me about an hour to make a phone call since my phone would crash each time I'd dial.
What I hope to see on Iphone is the ability to search through emails based on keyword/sender etc... like the Blackberry.
The other thing would be nice is the ability to have a general mailbox with all accounts instead of having to thumb through all of the email boxes separately. (They do it in Mac MAIL but not iphone)
wifi sync would be most wanted feature for me... otherwise i see myself screwing up the battery in no time...
Now can we please, PLEASE, P L E A S E have copy and paste. Please. The lack of this basic feature makes me want to re-enact the blender comercial on a regular basis.
