More info on Quake 3 for the iPod touch
That video we saw the other day of two iPod touches running a networked Quake 3 deathmatch sent ripples through the iPod / iPhone community. Those of you doubting the authenticity of the clip can probably put some fears to bed, as GameCyte has gotten a hold of the programmers, and they make it fairly clear it wasn't some elaborate hoax. According to developers Cameron and Marcia Tofer of Hermitworks, they managed to get the game up and running on the touches in, "Between eight and twelve hours," using jail-broken units, no official SDK, and modified code that added basic accelerometer support. The game in the video is being hosted on one of the devices and played over a local network -- and the Tofers claim that running a full 64-player match wouldn't be out of the question. Unfortunately, there aren't any plans to make this demo public, as the team is working on original content for the platform. So... email petition anyone?

mother of pearl, when will iphones and touches come equppied with sarcasm detectors?
oh, and by the by, neobond, those be touches in the pictures.
Neobond, they are actually ipod touches.

yomomma is so fat not even Jesus can lift her spirits?
Just need to say... WOW
sure, but does it play doom?
...crap, it does ( http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/11/apples-iphone-yes-it-plays-doom/ )
But will it blend?
Yes, it does (http://www.willitblend.com/videos.aspx?type=unsafe&video=iphone)
Niiiice.
Or... £200 and no contract (£150 if you go the eBay way). Doesn't seem so unreasonable now, especially considering how much the specs outclass the DS, eh? With all the puffing and blowing about the iPhone, everyone seems to forget the Touch is exactly the same machine sans the phone bits.
I agree on the lack of physical buttons being annoying, but there's plenty of things you could do to get around that problem - just look at Ninja Gaiden DS, for example.
How'd my comment get down here? That was meant to be @Rich.
I do not know if any of you with jailbroken phones have tried out Yeti3D, but it controls the exact same way and I have gotta say, it is horrible. Just watch how the guy in the video cannot manage to hit his buddy. This method of control does not work. It is a fun tech demo, but impractical. It is both too sensitive and not sensitive enough.
I am not saying that it could not be done with some enhancements. Maybe somebody will figure out how to make it great. Or maybe we just need to practice awhile.
Now where is my WarioWare...
I reckon... 2 weeks and we'll see a joystick / control pad for the iPhone / iTouch.
I doubt it will be that soon, but it is inevitable. Once Apple realizes the potential here, I think they will allow selected developers to access the dock connector or bluetooth for this purpose.
no no, i mean homebrew of course!! :D
I used to play video games and I would say it'll be fun for the first two weeks until they hack it and aimbots start flowing in. People just can't get good the old fashion way: with practice and determination. I'm actually in favor of these guys going the "official" route through the SDK, that way there is more of a possibility of protecting it for a little bit longer.
dude. this is how we're going to sound when we get old and start bashing the young people.
AIMbots are quite rare. I play video games constantly. On this generation of consoles hacks are very rare online. Its obvious your blaming your lack of skill on people cheating, who in all reality aren't cheating, they are just better than you.
I'm not talking about consoles, I'm talking about games that come out on the PC platform like quake, unreal tournament and Wolfenstein. It's easier to hack those because of the platform they are built on. I agree, it's much more rare on consoles.
When you get really good at a game it's easy to tell who's cheating. I know most beginners will accuse everyone of cheating. I have respect for people who are better than me.
Wait a sec. The source code they ported is open source - under the GPL license. ID released the source, free for use under the terms of the GPL. If these guys port the code and then release their own content based on the ID source, they are obligated to release their source. A lot of dumb comments in the thread above so far (junk about how 'they won't release all their hard work for free!') by people who obviously know nothing about homebrew / open development / or porting of IDs software in the past. It is either GPL - or they pay $$$ to license it from ID. One or the other.
In any event, good work by these guys - but nothing miraculous and when this happens on other platforms - they release it!
>>Unfortunately, there aren't any plans to make this demo public, as the team is working on original content for the platform. So... email petition anyone?
Since when is 'working on original content for the platform.' an excuse not to take 10 minutes and release the source code???
Anyways, I expect to hear their news release about their paying $$$ to ID for licensing the software for their own content, or else they better release the source. Only other alternative is they use it by themselves 'for fub' to create games they have no intention of releasing.
c'mon!
if you are not going to use it, open source it, let us play with it!
ok, its not that useful but its a cool tech demo.
they better release that game to the public. I love quake III
uhh, i believe quake III was released to the public. like, uh, in december of 1999.
ok im seriously pissed off! i want quake 3 on my iphone right now! i would pay $$$$ for it!!!!!!! and im sure lots of people would! please lets figure out a way to get them to release quake 3 for the iphone!!!!!
ok im seriously pissed off! i want quake 3 on my iphone right now!
Wow. I'd hate to see what you're like if anything actually bad ever happened.
Without tactical feedback, the iphone and ipod touch are NOT good gaming platforms.
and that whole not having buttons thing might pose a problem too.
There are buttons, but it remains to be seen if games will be able to utilize them. The iPhone has the main button, a vol up and a vol down button, the mute switch and the lock button on top. I imagine the vol up and down buttons would be good for changing weapons, don't know if it's possible to use them that way though.
Well, you could just make the touch screen the buttons, the left side of the screen would act as a left analog stick, the right would act as a right analog stick, the bottom of the screen could be jump, the top switch weapons, and uhhhh.... crap... this doesn't work as good as I thought...
TACTICAL feedback? Really? ...You're suggesting the iPhone and iPod Touch ought to come with, what, General Petraeus' review of your Q3A skills?
i was referring to being able to feel an actual control pad and set of buttons. i've tried the NES emu for the iphone, it doesn't feel right...or like anything, actually.
They could create a small handheld docking station with tactile buttons. You could make it small enough that you'd probably be able to keep it under the size of the DS. Although I'd wait till the new iPhone comes out, since it'll probably be a different size.
I put more hours into Quake 3 than any other game I've ever played. So I would really, really want to try this on my iPhone! The controls are probably a bitch but it still be a blast.
I could never get the hang of gaming on my cell phones--from my Nokias and Blackjacks to my iPhone--I just can't get my sausage fingers to work with the button layouts. The first company to offer a BT game controller for the iPhone gets my money.
I don't see how the iPhone has the hardware to run this... even at 480x272 or whatever the resolution is. Anyone care to explain?
And I thought running ZQuake on my Treo was cool (it still is, screw you guys).
But... Where's Duke Nukem!?
Engadget is a secret corporation that harvests us for our ideas through page comments, then sells them to Nokia, Samsung, Apple... the list goes on.
Or, they should be.
Meh....I've been playing Quake (the original.) on my Pocket PC since 2001. Of course though its iPhone bitch so its immediately better.
Defensive idiots are defensive. It's "better" because it's Quake 3 Arena... not Quake ONE. Are you not seeing the difference there studcakes? Nobody said it was "better" because it's on an iPhone (or a Touch). That was all in your head. Seek counseling.
It should be a crime to not release this...
excuse me....Jordan many ppl have the Dell Axim X50v and in fact the iphone/ipod touch is pretty sad given it can play Q3A now when the X50v could play Q3A in 2005 and Christien Rioux (the dev who made Q3 for pocket pc) actually released it right after he finished it so all of us humble ppc and X50v owners could show it off unlike this dumbass dev hu is just teasing u guys cuz trust me he has no plans on a public release...people just didnt notice the x50v much when it played Q3A because it wasnt as glamourous and shiny as the iphone/ipod touch...and IMHO my bro has an iphone and to tell u the truth it aint that great
