Nokia's touchscreen Tube out in the wilds?
Like detective work? Good, this one's for you. That's the supposed first picture of Nokia's Tube which we've enhanced a bit to see all the detail. According to Symbian-Freak, the device code-named "Tube" will be Nokia's first touch S60 device but will not be a flagship phone. Another higher spec'd phone will ship "shortly after." The display is said to be between 3- and 3.5-inches with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a camera (with another up front based on the picture) which they say is "way better" than the iPhone's but not on par with the existing N-series shooters. The phone is said to ride atop quad-band GSM/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA radios with built-in Bluetooth, WiFi, uPnP support and a stylus. Something you'll apparently need judging by that skinny scroll bar. GPS? Yup, that too. No multi-touch on this model but it is said to provide haptic feedback in a package supposedly smaller (maybe a little bit wider) than the N73. We also notice an "XpressMedia" label on the phone which would indicate an affiliation with Nokia's XpressMusic class of media devices. You'll also notice that the icons have been slightly revised since we went hands on with the S60 Touch UI back in February. Real deal or not, it's a mystery worthy of your skills.

Exactly. If it needs a stylus, it has already lost. Some of my friends have iPhones (I wouldn't get one), and I like the styluslessness ;)
Can't you iPhone guys read? It doesn't NEED the stylus, it's an accessory/option for handwriting/drawing/quicker input.
IT IS FINGER BASED.
If you have been lisening Jobs he at least said that in future we dont need to read anymore!....dont hurt me.
yeps it's finger based if you have actually seen any of the videos. Wouldnt make sense to have those huge buttons for stylus. Stylus is used for handwriting/drawing while you dont need stylus at all for normal use.
Hey Matt nice insult.
You iPhone fanboys can come back when it's actually... you know USEFUL as a smartphone.
Wow, it's an iPhone with a slightly worse UI but a better camera, better Bluetooth, GPS, USB mass storage, removable battery, widescreen display, MMS, video recording, background tasks and all of the other features people have been crying out for!
Exactly!
Just to add it has crappier TS input or most probally will, but in a + side you could add that it will probally be cheaper than iphone at least with contract.
Widescreen display? Background tasks? You don't have an iPhone do you? It took them a year to make a device that can compete?
Good luck with that S60, you'll need it so this doesn't suck. I feel like I can say that having spent over $1000 on S60 phones over the years.
The main cool thing about the iPhone is, it works, and it's a joy to use. Take the camera. A paltry 2 MP you'll say. Yes, but what you don't mention is that there is no shutter delay, and that the album function is a joy to use thanks to multi touch, and that wallpapers have never looked better thanks to multi touch (as you adjust zoom level and position right there with 2 fingers, which takes about 2 seconds, as compared to what I had to do on my N73 to produce a nice wallpaper which was upload to computer, resize it to match the exact wallpaper area (!), trial and error until I got the pixel size correct, then upload to N73 - it looked gorgeous, but it took me over an hour.
That is what the iPhone is all about. It makes all those features not just easy to use but also a joy. Whether or not Nokia's iPhone-clone can compete with that remains to be seen.
So you say that all and you have owned over 2 years old Nokia smartphone called N73? =D
Nobody cant say that these new S60 smartphones are slow and if they would be people wouldnt stand it and S60 wouldnt own 75% of smartphone market ;) You just cant say that phones like E51, N95, N82 and so on would be slow. They have actually done some work too you know.
I can't wait! This will be my iPhone replacement... I'm always a Nokia fan.
That's great althou the UI does look a little sucky (what's up with the thin scroll bar?? what's up with the scroll bar anyways??). But let's remember that this is still very early and there is a lot of time to improve. I'm hoping the flag ship model will have a larger screen.. I'm thinking 4,1" like the internet tablets. Couldn't really settle for anything smaller than that myself..
I was VERY excited about multitouch (possibilities! innoviation!) till I played with my friend's iphone. I learned some facts of life:
1) 99% of the time you're using one finger, so multitouch isn't really important.
2) 99% you're using one hand, so multitouch isn't really useful.
3) Pinching a photo isn't as practical as double clicking it.
4) A physical qwerty keypad is indispensable.
And the fact that 3rd part apps won't run in the background, is enough to deter me from future iphone3G plans.
Nokia's tube is great, it really is. But S60 Touch is plagued with a sluggish, and slow UI. Bottom-line:
I'm buying the first Android Touch high-end phone with a qwerty keypad to come out on this planet.
You know, I'm actually a Nokia fan, but that picture makes me cry. Please. Nokia. Hire icon designers and typographers. The S60 UI needs help.
S60 is a dead horse, and no amount of flogging will make it run.
It's had its time but this software has not improved in the last 5 years - my Nokia 6600 is witness to that, the UI is 1:1 the same as the latest N95. It's not even gotten faster which is somewhat amazing.
If I were Nokia I'd kick it out and put the dev resources into snazzing up Android or another linux mobile based OS.
So let me get this straight... Nokia, the biggest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, took over a year to create an iPhone clone, and it's missing the iPhone's biggest feature, multi-touch?
But .... it has a 5MP camera ...like any other j-random samsung or LG. And one of the least used features of any gadget in the world, the front facing camera. I have never seen anyone use that, ever. I don't understand why they keep putting them on phones.
This is almost funny as "the clone" will be outdone by the iPhone 2 shortly thereafter. I almost feel sorry for Nokia - used to love their phones before they lost the plot.
@ Nikster
(next reply for Cliffs)
Wow. You hit it on the nail. I mean, multi-touch is WAY more useful than a good main camera and 3G video-calling.
Just the other day, I was shooting pictures/video of my kid's first walk. I know the image was blurry and noisy since it was at night, but I can zoom in and out on the blue-and-red mess. It adds an artistic touch. Too bad I didn't get a good picture of him, though. Because as a businessman (you know, the intended market of smartphone users), I was on the road for days and wanted to see my kid's face as I talked to him and his mother. But I didn't video-conference. Nope. I mean, it's one of the least used features ever! I just printed out a photo and stared at it while talking to him. Some lady thought I was pedo-bear, but whatev's.
And I can't believe Nokia took so long to compile a new OS—which no one has yet used and cannot therefore criticize. I mean, anyone can take a moderately good camera, world-wide 3G radio, and a standard aspect ratio screen and stick it in a phone. Oh wait...
Look, nikster. You're a noob. A nub, even. According to your other reply, you don't even know how to use basic image editing functionality on your other phone. I'm sorry that you needed someone to dumb down "Edit" for you. Thus, your opinion, if it may be called so, matters to no one. When I'm optimistically perusing the comments for leads and specifics on the device, I don't want to see some troll spouting his/her biased "knowledge.
And as an iPhone user (which I doubt at this point), you haven't mentioned the browser. Believe me, NOTHING even comes close to the internet experience over WIFI. The browser is the infallible point to which no counter exist. In all other respects, the iPhone pretty much cowers to some device or another. And yet, you neglect Safari. That's an auto-fail.
Hope you have fun with Cover Flow! Is it ok if I take 640x480 video at 30 FPS?
[Brackets] = sarcasm, though not biting.
*Asterisks = main point.
*Nikster presented a [solid] argument against the production of the "Tube" or for the increased production of the iPhone or something. Who knows why he's trolling?
*I present a situation in which the iPhone [clearly succeds] due to its superior user experience, though hardware advantages are obvious. Alludes to pedo-bear.
*I [condemn] Nokia for taking so long to integrate practical, high-end features mentioned by Nikster into a phone. Even though they don't appear in the iPhone.
*I call Nikster a noob/nub. Cite an earlier post in which he fails at making backgrounds.
*I Tell him to stop trolling, because it disturbs my inqueries about the device's specifics.
*Decries his weak argument for failing to point out the obvious internet broswer advantage sported by the iPhone.
*I wish him the best with his one of his useless features while requesting that I might use one a superior feature to counter.
S60 is a dead horse yet millions upon millions of people love it?
It's quite obvious to me that you don't know what you're talking about... Comparing the n95 to the 6600? If you believe that your 6600 is anywhere near as fast as my n95 8gb then I suspect you've never seen nor used one before.
It's also obvious that you didn't even read the article well - this is a lower end touch device.
YOU may believe Nokia have lost the plot but it is guaranteed that they will sell many more of this device than the iPhone, despite the army of iFanboys out there.
Indeed. For me it seems that most of the people in NA just cant stand that Nokia dominates the market. You can cry as much as you want, but people seem to love it by some wierd reason and they do have all the option to choose in those Nokia markets. NA in a other hand is missing 2 of the world biggest phone manufacturers.
I just watched that video of the graphics power of this phone and all I can saw is WOW. Thanks for whoever posted that. If they get the UI to work as fast as that video, then all touch phones will be put to shame.
Have you seen how fast the iPhone's UI works? You simply can't compair it to anything else. IT SCREAMS!I've had probably 6 Symbian phones. Thank God the battery is removable on Nokia phones because you will be taking the damn thing out to restart this crap OS over and over and over. Welcome to Symbian.
Yes I have seen the iPhone UI. Compared to that video (if that is what it will really be like in the end), then I have to say none hacked iPhone UI looks like dated crap. You should go back to the top of these post and click on that video and watch.
All you iPhone users now are crying out aghast because it includes a stylus. Of course makes send for the iPhone which does not have anywhere near as many apps as there are for the S60.
But for apps like sketch where you draw on a touch device (of course all you iPhone lovers do is listen to music on a phone) and where pressure sentivity comes into play, a stylus is a much better drawing tool than a thick stub of a finger. I hope you realise that.
Or are you all so short-sighted to not be able to see anything beyond a iPhone usage (of which there is not much to speak of).
So please stop with your fanboyinsm and try looking at a tool as a tool with specific use case scenarios.
The light sensor for the multi-touch allows you to effortlessly "tap" your inputs. Friends with "Uno-touch" phones have to be so cautious with how they tap, with or without a cumbersome stylus. Youre right, the actual gestures of multitouch are just too intuitive to browse the web in a mobile fashion.
Which part of Symbiam is "way better" than Unix?
Do I missed something?
