Ubuntu Mobile and Moblin get investigated
Still confused about the whole MID thing? Fret not, as you're certainly not alone in nodding your head furiously up and down. About the recent Bossaconference 08, one particular fellow managed to get some quality face time with Ubuntu Mobile and Moblin and break things down in bulleted fashion. Put simply, the former is a handheld (read: not phone / desktop) Linux OS that's optimized for touching and meant to be seen on 4- to 7-inch displays. As for the latter, it's merely a "project site for embedded Linux development," not an operating system in and of itself. Think you're ready to get schooled further? Tap the read link and dust off that Trapper Keeper.

That's a pretty cool OS.
Artiom @ Apr 9th 2008 8:08AM
eh... Vista is much better. And it comes preinstalled
Lein @ Apr 9th 2008 8:17AM
Seconded about the Vista thing.
"Oh look, a new version of a mainstream Linux distro. Let's see how many features from real desktop operating systems they ripped off and stuffed together in one package THIS time!"
Oh well, at least they can plaster OPEN SOURCE all over it to make themselves feel a little better about being con artists and thieves.

@ Lein
Care to give some of those examples that Linux "ripped off" from other OSes?

car pc anyone? would blow away anything out there right now in terms of feeling like a completely integrated system.
Shadyman @ Apr 9th 2008 5:44PM
LinuxICE is a car-pc distro

MID is a solution in search of a problem.
johannson @ Apr 9th 2008 11:17AM
ummm text input anyone? linux has no practical means of inputing text via touchscreen. that is the reason I stick with Vista which has AMAZING support for text input and touch screens. Vista's voice support is also pretty good but i love what they have done for my tablet. freakin awesome.
skulldriveshaft @ Apr 10th 2008 12:17AM
do you see the qwerty keyboard split on either side of the screen itself?
iofthestorm @ Apr 10th 2008 12:03AM
Meh, it took me a while to realize Moblin=Mobile Linux, I was wondering why Intel named an OS after an enemy from The Legend of Zelda for the longest time...
