CE-Oh no he didn't! Part LV: NVIDIA boss says "We're going to open a can of whoop-ass" on Intel
Looks like Intel's plans to enter the graphics space in a big way with its Nehalem and Larrabee lines strike NVIDIA CEO Jen Hsun-Huang as being rather foolish -- in a conference call with analysts today, Huang said Intel's integrated graphics offerings were "a joke," and that even a tenfold increase in performance would put them behind NVIDIA's current products. Huang didn't stop there, saying that NVIDIA was "going to open a can of whoop-ass," and that while Intel's graphics chips were fine for running Office, they would never cut it for gamers and other demanding users. Huang kept going, responding to questions about all those driver-related Vista crashes by saying that NVIDIA had to support new games weekly while Intel's chips aren't ever put to the test. Actually, that's toning it down a bit -- what Huang actually said was "You already have the right machine to run Excel. You bought it four years ago... How much faster can you render the blue screen of death?" Yeah, them's fightin' words -- you going to sit there and take it, Intel?[Thanks, Mike A.]

If only we could see it! Man...
Wow. This is going to be an intense bunch of comments. Shields up, phasers at maximum. This is going to be a bumpy ride.
INCOMING NVIDIA!
"We are the BORG, lower your shields and surrender your vessels, or we will OPEN UP A CAN OF WHOOP-ASS!"
I tried scouring the net for the video. Found none. :-(
Any soul there who caught it on tape?
I would give half of my life just to see that video. Engadget!!!!!
Mike10010100 you made my night :)
Anyone else think that pic looks eerily like a young Kim Jong -Il?
@steve
I thought the same thing and that he was threatening Intel with a refreshing Andes mint chocolate.
Don't worry, Nvidia will just push for 8x SLI to "advance" graphics technology.
Now all I need is a new mobo, new PSU, bigger case, more fans...and 7 more graphics cards.
Then why is it that Intel (with their amazing integrated cores) and ATI havnt surpassed Nvidia in terms of single card performance? (ATI takes the lead every now and then, i know, but the point still stands)
There is obviously a limit in how much a graphics maker can put into a single processor. The only way to alleviate that is through the use of a second card (just like a second CPU socket to alleviate the strain on a single chip) for a short term solution.
Until the next generation comes out, this is the only way to increase performance. They cant make a processor that they dont know how to make yet, so why not give you the option to SLI or Crossfire to give you an extra push.
If you want it, then get it, otherwise, live with the industry wide max that is in place for graphics cores.
Because SLI is a farce that requires buggy and hot motherboards (680i, I'm looking at you) that costs a lot more than a true "high-end" card. The problem with the market as of this moment is that there isn't really any leaps and bounds in technological improvement. Now I'm not saying simply "just make better cards", but when Nvidia is rather more complacent of pushing G92, which was a welcome improvement in temperatures and performance value in the 8800GT, is used in the supposed "high-end" that is the 9800GTX (which is priced in a way that is encouraging multi-GPU) and the ridiculous card that is the 9800GX2, which is just an amalgamation of current technology in a new "high-end" card, when it really isn't that groundbreaking.
The high-end isn't being focused on right now, it's all about the mid-range (9600GT, 8800GT), and I'm fine with that, because the supposed "high-end" Nvidia purports to have really isn't that much better for much higher cost.
That's why they want you to buy more than one product when you really don't need it; not to mention SLI's shortcomings in scalability in a lot of games, not to mention the crappy performance increases seen in Tri-SLI, it's not that appealing for a "sometimes working" Multi-GPU setup.
Also, I'm pretty sure we are at that point when they have to make better scalable processors. We are getting almost too small for silicon and I think Intel has a point in making multiple core processors and pushing for raytracing or hybrid rendering as being the immediate future. Programming shaders and raster graphics engines is no picnic where RT is quite simple, straightforward, and scalable.
Sure, the first push into this field is going to be a little lackluster... but give it a few years and I think it will have a very steep improvement curve.
Wow, what a badass CEO.
Yeah, and a Big Mouthed one too.
"A can of whoop ass."
Either he is a bad ass, or a fucking idiot trying to sound edgy.
The latter, I think.
Not as bad ass as Steve Ballmer...
Nah, he's just bad. And an ass.
If I were to run a company...
I'd want him as my CEO.....
People in North Korea would be glad to even have a computer with integrated graphics. Oh wait, that's not Kim Jong Il.
Rofl! I thought the exact same thing.
he's so ronery
Tru dat, Rooby Doo.
You know what they say, they all look the same.
Bernhard: I thought the same too. And I'm also East Asian.
Oh shit this sounds great. Competition = Consumers FTW! I have to totally agree with him and lmao at the BSOD reference. Nvidia is going scrape the motherboard with Intel's face.
Just if all of Nvidia's drivers issues with Vista didn't cause the same problem.
Though, the beta drivers... thems I like.
Well the beta drivers no like me, I find the official ones have less serious errors and crashes
I stopped buying graphic cards in the 90s, now I buy consoles.
And that's why PC gamers today are stuck with games that have been dumbed down to play on console controllers. Thanks a bunch!
Will,
What do you mean? The last time I checked Console gamers and PC gamers couldn't play together.
And any day, I'll choose a $500 dollar console that will last 6 to 7 years, instead of having to upgrade my PC every 2 years, only to get pwned by some noob who uses a $15 hack, and plays CoD4 on his notebook with integrated graphics, while watching TV.
I'm referring to games like BioShock that while not *bad*, could have been better if they hadn't been design in such a way that they could be played on an Xbox. When something is designed from the ground up to be played on a keyboard and mouse, it gives a better experience for people playing with that. But when it has to work on a gamepad, features are inevitably not included, controls are clumsier, and it just doesn't turn out as perfectly as a PC only game could have.
The obsession with cross platform game development makes sense from a financial point of view, but games designed to be played one way or the other usually turn out better, without some careful tuning. For and fairly recent example (though downgraded in the other direction), look at Unreal Tournament 3. It was designed for PC, but happens to have a PS3 (and maybe 360 soon) versions, which play somewhat differently. The whole game is slowed down because the controls are less accurate, and UT is a series that derives most of its fun from the speed and twitch reflexes.
FYI: UT-3 for PS3 is playable with Keyboard and mouse
@Will
Wow man. "Bioshock not *bad* on PC?" Are you kidding? I have pretty high standard myself, but if you didn't think Bioshock kicked serious @ss on PC, then I'd love to know what game on the planet did hit your standards??
I think alot of people had bad experiences with GPU (and CPU) intensive games like Bioshock, cuz they simply didn't have a beefy enough PC to handle it. People with integrated cards are somehow offended that the game crashes after the opening sequence and even those who have anything less than a discrete 8600GT, get all bent out of shape having to lower all the settings to be able to play on PC.
So with a game like that using more of the potential horsepower of even a high-end PC than most, I totally don't buy into your assertion that Bioshock was handicapped BECAUSE it was also released on console?? Bioshock was made for PC first- plain and simple... and the fact that many had to go out and buy a bleeding edge PC just to run the damn game is testament to the fact that the developers made the conscious decision NOT to cater to the masses by dumbing down the game.
Give me a break- lol :)
Not everyone plays FPS, some of us actually like a more compelling game experience then running around aimlessly shooting at things.
Don't underestimate the impact of Intel... but hey, its nice to see competition driving others to be better :)
I agree, Intel maybe a novice in this area, but they have the capital to take on the might of NVIDIA, they could even buy them out, if they wanted to, Jen Hsun-Huang should remember that. I do like the fighting talk, though.
Sounds like someone might have done a little too much drinking...
who else imagines him saying "going to open a can of whoop-ass," with a really funny asian accent?
Uh... not me.
oh oh oh, i did.
:P
Too bad he doesn't have a fobby accent or anything, but I only knew that from having previously heard an interview with him.
Intel is currently thinking up a good yo mama comeback
In ten years discrete graphics cards will be like discrete sound cards today. Something only found in high end gaming rigs and probably useless even there.
Yeah..problem is people were saying that in 1997.
CUDA is the future, anyway.
No it wont.
You seem to think that graphics will get to the point where it wont advance anymore, therefore, graphics cards of today will shrink to the point where they can be integrated into a northbridge or small enough to be integrated into a CPU.
When something like that happens, discrete graphic cards, like it is the case today, will be 10x more powerful in a discrete form than their integrated counterparts when that time comes.
And comparing graphics to sound is just silly. Really silly. Sound is simple to process. Graphics is far from it. Thats why there isnt a CPU that can do what a discrete graphics card can. Not even the precious Cell. Not by a long shot.
"How much faster can you render the blue screen of death?"
HAHAHAHA! Best quote ever!!
I know. This quote is going straight to my email sig! (unless they have a sig option here, in which case, I better find it!)
How much faster can you render the blue screen of death?
thats gotta be one of my favorite computer related quotes now
Ahahaha, Maybe AMD/ATI should gang up with Intel to take out NVIDIA... Or vise versa if that would work haha! I LOVE A GOOD ROAST!!
hahahah was that " i love a good rast" comment from Liar Liar? cos if it was yes that is hilarious yes.
Intel's response is as follows;
INTEL: How are you gentlemen !!
INTEL: All your base are belong to us.
INTEL: You are on the way to destruction.
Nvidia: What you say !!
INTEL: You have no chance to survive make your time.
INTEL: Ha Ha Ha Ha ....
WOW GFG!
Nvidia: for great justice, take off every zig
That's what anti-aliasing is for.
Hey, wasn't Nvidia going to buy Via a little while ago so they could compete in processors too? They should really get on that before all this tough talk bites them in the ass.
Yeah, NVIDIA should go and buy VIA and get into the business of x86. I wonder what can they do as a competitor in that market segment and we as users will have more options :)
I don't know if anyone else noticed this... but that picture is a remarkable copy of Kim Jong Il.
I was thinking the exact same thing, hell even the glasses look similar ....Before I read the headline I was wondering what Krazy Kim was up to again
I'm fairly certain that nVidia's and ATI's integrated graphics already beat Intel's offerings...so if nVidia wants to open a can of whoop-ass on Intel, they've got to get more OEMs to use their products instead of Intel's.
nVidia's CEO being this blunt reminds me of when Seagate's CEO said their customers use Seagate hard drives for porn.
don't you know? the internet's for porn!
Just another reason why Intel might not lisense nvidia the right to run its Nahelelem cpu's on their motherboards.
(just for the record I hope they still do)
I dont think they need anyone permission to add support for a CPU.
Just like you dont need permission to add a PCI Express port so that *ANY* graphics card will work in it. (SLi is a different issue because the chipset needs some nVidia stuff)
What a badass motherfucker.
Remove bad and motherfucker and you would be right.
Jon.. don't forget to add the "n".
CEO chest-beating is fun to watch.
AMD is doing things with Fusion, Intel is doing things with Larrabee...what's clear is the age of the cpu&gpu living together (or at least strongly tied) is upon us. Where's Nvidia's CPU? :)
None of us know how these things will go in the market. One thing's for sure: entry-level graphics are not going to be put aside by these products :)
The vast majority of the market really needs to be convinced of this "visual computing" angle to really be drawn to it.
Right now it's high-def movies and basic internet moving things along at the entry-level. Not much else. Maybe when new input methods and/or apps really shine, we'll see a slow migration from entry-level graphics from the biiig non-gamer market, but I'm not holding my breath.
nvidia's CPU is its GPU. CUDA is one step in this direction. The company is also demoing a prototype portable gaming device with just one chip that does both general purpose processing and graphics.
Awesome. It's like American Gladiators for nerds. I'm living in my time.
The biggest driver problems I've had are with sound cards. Win NVidia you really need to download 2 or 3 drivers and see which is the most stable for the games you play. You don't really have that option for sound cards where there is only one driver or two if you are lucky.
Sounds like an asshole....are you sure this wasn't an Apple press conference?
pot meet kettle
How much faster can you render a BSOD?
Well I don't know, but I like my compiz snappy.
Ethana, linux, stop posting, etc.
I wonder what his trash-talking might be like when he's pwning nubs on Crysis with his 9800 GX2s in SLI. Anyway Intel's got this group of people who sit in underground bunkers and brainstorm 24/7 for uber cool sounding names for their products. They'll be tasked with conjuring up a comeback now. it won't be long before they think something up that will hit Jen Hsun-Huang like a cannon ball to the face.
Isn't console gaming gaining ground while PC gaming is shrinking?
Anyway, Hsun-Huang is correct, that integraed graphics aren't going to appease gamers and certain other users, but that doesn't mean that Intel's integrated graphics are bad.
Most people don't play such games and don't need some expensive desecrate graphics card. I think his attack on Intel was one from seeing that Intel is gaining ground fast.
think ya just had a freudian slip there, B
Intel GMAs are crap to begin with. They just manage to get Aero theme to run and maybe it was a major step for their graphics development /sarcasm. They also take away your precious memory from your computer since they don't have dedicated memory.
I agree that Intel's graphics chipsets -not cards- are good for everyday work but not for everyone. Power graphics cards are not only for games, I need powerful graphics power for visualizing 3d volumetric data, doing some 3D work and why not through some games into the mix. I don't mean Crysis per say but really which games can intel crapware chipset run? just my hentai 2D games.
I totally agree with Jin Hsun-Huang that Intel's graphics chipset is a joke.
"Anyway, Hsun-Huang is correct, that integraed graphics aren't going to appease gamers and certain other users, but that doesn't mean that Intel's integrated graphics are bad."
The problem is, they are. Intel's integrated graphics are terrible. Even a $35 NVidia 8400GS beats the living daylights out of the Intel's GMA 3100.
Hopefully Intel will legitimately step up their game in this market, as it's partially their fault that laptop graphics are so miserable. NVidia cards that are laughed at in desktops are considered desirable in laptops; the 8400GS is a $100 option on most Dell laptops and has three times higher benchmark scores in 3dMark06 than the standard X3100. That's sad.
You do know that it is because of discrete graphics companies like Nvidia (PS3, XBOX) and ATI (Wii, Gamecube, XBOX 360) that console gaming is where it is today.
The way things are going, PC gaming will be the starting point for your next gen consoles (as was the case with 7800/1900 series and the current gen consoles).
Because of this, PC's will always be receiving high end graphics cards, which after a year and a few refinements to the core, make their way to consoles in some form.
The PC gaming industry is just fine.l
Here's the deal though. If Intel doesn't push the market for Nvidia's boards and games there's no reason for the high end cpu market to exist. I've got a Macbook with a processor to die for in a PC.. but due to Intel's crappy graphics it plays a 3 year old game worse than a 3 year old low-end PC. If intel is calling the end to "normal" people playing PC games, then they better be ready to sell lots of eePCs with $30 processors because their $300 processors are worthless without the 3D card. Like the Nvidia head said, video and office were 4 years ago... I can use my 1ghz for everything except h.264 video. The only consumer apps that sell expensive Intel chips are games... why does Intel have it in for 3D cards?
As a hardcore PC gamer of around 18 years and counting (well my first gaming experience was on an Amstrad CPC 464, so whenever that came out!), I have to say I've become more and more enamoured with the idea of NOT playing games on my PC. I don't know whether its just because I'm getting older, but sitting in my uncomfortable computer chair at a desk with the ol' AWSD seems 132% more geeky than relaxing on a sofa with a Dualshock3 or Batarang (or even a Wiimote) and enjoying some console gaming on my HDTV.
I fear in the next 5 years or so, PC gaming will have been completely killed off by a combination of next-next-gen console graphics, PC game piracy and overpriced hardware upgrades. I say that I fear it, but I don't really know that I do.
Things are getting cheaper... Technology such as graphics cards and CPUs will likely continue on a cheaper band from here on out (just speculation).
Anyway, no way any console will kill PC gaming. Pirating is hurting it bad, but it will make it out with more secure setups like STEAM or equivalent systems.
I suggest you just buy yourself a nice chair, and when you rebuild, plan ahead. There is no such thing as future-proof, but you can get pretty damned close to it.
Thanks to Games for Windows, alot of PC games can now be enjoyed on the couch. If a game is released on 360/PC, i always pick the PC version, and just play it with a 360 controller. If the game doesnt support it, then i just use Pinnacle Game Profiler to map the controller to Mouse/Keyboard (with downloadable profiles, keeping me playing and not mapping).
Ill take a game that actually runs at 1080p on my widescreen as opposed to the lies the consoles tell you on the back of the game boxes (the game is NOT rendered at 1080p on alot of 360/PS3 games).
And, i can launch the games without having to put in a disc (Media Center).
Ive been playing PC games on my couch for a long time now.
he should be running Moto
Is there a Korean word for "can of whoop-ass"? Oh yea, Nvidia.
Yeah, I wish something *REALLY* big would come along again, it's been pretty stagnant... that stuff CERN was doing sounded pretty interesting but yeah, most people have no use for the power these cards can bring anyway, I know I wouldn't. I just don't have the time for gaming these days =S
Jen Hsun-Huang GOING OFF!
Wow, those aren't just fighting words! That's what the kids these days refer to as "Pwnage." That guy may be cocky, but this is just the kick in the pants Intel needs after sitting on their laurels and a near monopoly of the CPU market for years. Everybody Huang-Hsun tonight!
and then play some "highway to the danger zone!"
Nvidia is in a better position than some might think to open said "can of whoop ass."
Intel wants to move to raytracing to take advantage of it's upcoming multi-core CPUs since raytracing is highly a parallel task. In the realm of parallel computing nvidia is already king. Like Jim said, it's called CUDA and it allows people to write C programs to run on the GPU. Game physics, video encoders/decoders, and scientific and engineering simulations are already being ported to CUDA. In some cases users see a 10x performance increase compared to the CPU version.
Intel is the company playing catch-up here. They've been stuck in a single threaded world for too long; now they're worried about how to effectively program their multi-core CPUs of the future.
does the 10x speed apply to video encoding too? that'd make backing up HD a helluva lot easier!
give intel alittle time and they will dominate the market just as they have with the the core 2 duos....intel has my support....of course im a true amaerican and support american products...go intel...and good luck AMD .....competition is needed in the chip market!
Too bad NVIDIA is based in Santa Clara, California. Which so happens to make it an American company. Also Jen-Hsun Huang has immigrated here with his parents and has been in the country for at least 30 years.
http://www.nvidia.com/page/companyinfo.html
Wired has an article about this from July 2002. This taking on Intel thing isn't new...
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/10.07/Nvidia.html
And for the record Core 2 Duo (like the rest of the core architecture) was designed in Israel.
He is right, Intel's graphic processors are pure junk, and can only be used for Office/web/e-mail. Gamers are SOL with Intel graphics.
nVidia has also been in the high-end graphic business far longer than Intel, and I would think, they know how to do a better job with it.
Great, so "man talks shit, is right; news at 11." Well, it's still pretty cool that it made it out to the public.
I like candid-ness. If "I'm going to F-ing kill google" got an accurate counter from Brin, It'd be absolutely hilarious.
"Oh yeah?! Well, /we're/ going to-- oh hey, mike just finished porting Wine_D3D to galliu-- HEY MIKE, IS IT STABLE? YEAH? SEND IT UPSTREAM AND NOTIFY PHORONIX, WILL YA? *cough*, sorry about that, what was I saying?"
Oh man, I wish he was my company's CEO.
NVIDA, FTW!
P.S. Anyone have the video... I gotta see this!
So will the be releasing some nice new drivers that work well with my laptop's 8400?
Power isn't so useful when it isn't stable
Nvidia will need to design working drivers for their "can of whoop ass". Intel has time to catch up!
I love it!
The problem isn't Intel or nVidia,..
It's The software makers!!!
I don't need to see the ant's crawling on the ground,..
or the trees swaying in the breeze,..
when I'm bashing your head with my crowbar!!!
They just need to empower us to write our own, like intel and ati did. If they do that, nVidia FTW.....
else
boycott(nVidia);
