Ivyskin's Xylo T2 case engulfs your iPhone, doesn't inhibit touchscreen use
This one's been available for a tick, but ivyskin's brilliant new iPhone case is just too marvelous to ignore. The Xylo Touch-Thru (T2) claims to be the first case to put a hard shell atop the iPhone's touch panel which can remain in place as you check your email, respond to a SMS or dial up the local pizza joint. By utilizing Surface Xylo Wave technology, ultrasonic waves are able to permeate through to the display without interference, allowing users to simultaneously keep their precious panel protected 'round the clock while not inhibiting their ability to touch and feel. Not a bad investment for $34.99, eh?

What a relief!
I thought we were going to have to go an entire week without an iPhone update.
Seth @ Apr 10th 2008 4:12PM
Umm, didn't we just have a 2.0 firmware beta review go up yesterday?
Lowest Ranked @ Apr 10th 2008 4:15PM
No 'we' didn't.
But, maybe you guys did.

Someone is bitter they don't have a iPhone yet. Is it really that hard to scroll past a story that you don't want to read???
JLTate @ Apr 10th 2008 7:18PM
I like how cell phone cases are now classified as "gadgets".
Hey Engadget, how about a news article on a new WiMo phone accessory? ... Yeah, thought not.
Sean O @ Apr 10th 2008 3:49PM
Not bad. I'd buy that.
Jordan @ Apr 10th 2008 4:31PM
I'd tap that.
kevinm @ Apr 10th 2008 3:50PM

Wouldn't a true conformist use what 90 percent of the market uses, whether they like it or not?

8 fingers? I should hope s/he has at least that! I'm the proud owner of 10 fingers myself, as I believe most humans are :-)
Zoroaster @ Apr 10th 2008 3:53PM
I never know how to feel about these kinds of things. I mean, sure it keeps your screen nice, but if you never use your screen because its covered by a thick slab of plastic, then why do you care how nice your screen is? I guess if you dropped it it would come in handy. But having to use a thicker, uglier iPhone for years just in case you happen to drop it on its screen doesn't seem like a good trade-off.
I prefer the "be careful with my expensive stuff" method of protection.
TostitoBandito @ Apr 10th 2008 3:57PM
The answer is because when the screen inevitably gets scratched up, it's much cheaper to replace a $10-40 case or screen film than the actual iPhone screen, or more likely the phone itself.
CharlieX @ Apr 10th 2008 4:20PM
I've had an iPhone since day 1. Stuffed into my jeans pocket every day.... Not a SINGLE scratch or problem with the screen. The metal surround is a little dinged, the casing has some mars where the phone fell to concrete.... but this thing is a tough mofo.
I just don't get buying a bulky case - then you have to either have rapper pants, or a belt clip, or a man purse. What's the point of clean, compact design when you put a big rubber condom on it?
Lowest Ranked @ Apr 10th 2008 4:31PM
Well for starters, that big rubber condom is very effective against Cellular Transmitted Diseases.
CraigJ @ Apr 10th 2008 4:53PM
@Charlie, same here. No case, screen is in perfect condition, even though my preferred cleaning method is wiping it on my jeans... Of course, since the screen is glass, there is not too much stuff to scratch it...
Dan @ Apr 10th 2008 5:02PM
Wait until you drop your phone in your pocket and it's full of diamonds....
Then you'll be sorry you didn't buy this case....
tweak @ Apr 10th 2008 5:19PM
How the hell have I managed to get several scratches in my screen. Lately it's been a new small one each week. Fuck.

Yeah, i saw those last weekend, which prompted me to try putting my iPhone in a ziplock bag so i could use it in the shower. I spent an hour of sunday morning reading XKCD and Toothpaste For Dinner in the shower, it was amazing. :)

Cool! this gives me great idea, I will buy a flat bed tow truck so that I can drive around hauling my 1959 cadillac without putting any risk in damaging it...
NNTPgrip @ Apr 10th 2008 4:02PM
I would like to see some real torture tests with a wide array of cases to see just how each model protects the screen for breakage.
I'm talking down concrete stairs, or trying the catch as it drops then hitting it with your hand and actually accelerating its fall. Dropping it off a couple of story balcony.
The real advancement with the next iPhone should be a shockproof and waterproof design. (or allow you to carry insurance on the phone with AT&T)
NNTgrip @ Apr 10th 2008 4:13PM
I mean wouldn't it be cool to see Steve Jobs introduce the next-gen iPhone, then go ahead, do the rest of the keynote, the whole time clumsily dropping and generally beating the shit out of the phone, with an aquarium on stage throughout the entire show, only at the end to say "oh, and one more thing", start a video playing on it, then toss it in the aquarium, close the keynote with a zoomed in shot of the video playing, phone underwater.

I think when you have fantastical visions of your cell phone in this manner, something has gone awry.

We're talking about a level of insanity you may not be familiar with, my dear sir.

"By utilizing Surface Xylo Wave technology, ultrasonic waves are able to permeate through to the display without interference"
Um... is it just me, or does the iPhone touchscreen work on capacitance, not some ultrasonic mumbo-jumbo?
mrpoo @ Apr 10th 2008 9:13PM
My thoughts exactly. It can transmit "ultrasonic waves" all day long, but not make a difference. The iPhone touchscreen is based on projected capacitance, not ultrasonics. That being said, so long as the case is a sufficiently thin dielectric, then the touchscreen functionality should be OK.
Jasper @ Apr 10th 2008 4:13PM
Now what can I buy to keep this beautiful case from getting scratched up...?
