New Nintendo DS coming at this year's E3?
According to reports (translated, possibly misunderstood, clearly speculative reports), come this year's E3, Nintendo could be rolling out a brand-spanking-new DS -- most likely very unlike the one pictured above. If you follow the text in a Bloomberg Japan article, Famicom magazine publisher Hirokazu Hamamura says that the timing of E3 would fall right in line with the two-year stagger the Big N has applied to other handheld releases. Of course, Nintendo is saying "no comment," though we find that's usually the last thing they say before introducing the Wii, Game Boy, N64, Harry Potter Wand, or Ultimate Doomsday Device.

seems unlikely to me, there is no major problems with the ds and the competition hasn't quite caught up with them yet. that said, i would love a ds with maybe some flash memory
i dont think they would be redesigning to solve a problem . what they would do is make it smaller and lighter to intice existing ds owners to buy the new one.
If they do launch a new DS, I hope it will have Wifi with WPA support. It's kind of annoying having to have two wireless routers.
Hmm.. a Nintendo ultimate doomsday device?
Press mario's nose and he explodes with the force of 5 trillion neutron stars collapsing in on themselves?
I have yet to buy a DS so I'll be closely following this to see what emerges. If it's a significant improvement then who knows, I may jump on the DS bandwagon.
This release is all thats keeping me from buying a DS...well, that and I'm broke. Still, can't wait!
Can you have your DS and eat it too????
Ya rly.
I've been holding off for months now so could this be the more mature handheld that I (An maybe more) people want?
How do you mean? Is the design of the DS or the games that make it "immature"?
The design of the actual console itself - I think that Nintendo could steal the remaining PSP crowd by adding in a few things like MP3 player and web browser, being the big N and all they probably could pull it off easily
Nearly forgot - Touch screen on the top too, the amount of times I used to touch the top screen when not paying attention, could be natural progression?
i wouldn't mind. the current design has some flaws that i'd love to see.
1. HIGH RESOLUTION. Having the same DPI since the gameboy is disgraceful.
2. Multitouch. Not as crucial, but that would be a lot cooler.
3. Larger screen. Especially on the top, since that's just screen and speakers.
4. Glass screen. Same general kind as the iPhone. Obviously not the exact same, Apple patents the hell out of everything they make. And some things they don't.
$.02
Oh, and a flash stick type of thing.
hell, if they used sd cards for the games, that would be awesome. especially if they had it so you could load multiple games to one card, those things are easy as hell to lose.

Sounds like you're looking for a whole new system, not a DS redesign. What would you do with multi-touch when DS games only support single, anyway?
- Include rumble as standard feature. I'm not heavy user, yet Metroid Pinball with rumble is definitely nice.
- Add more RAM. Homebrew Quake needs it.
- Bump clock speed. Homebrew needs it.
- Add 2-4GB of flash memory with R4 preinstalled. LOL
alas, multitouch would be nice, and i could see it eventually being supported :)
dvd playback maybe? ;)
not a new DS. I think they're going to release a new GameBoy to interface with the Wii. Like the GBA did with the GameCube, and like the PSP does for the PS3. That's what they're going to do.
Why wouldn't you do that wirelessly?
Um... The DS can do that, you know...
In fact, they're already doing it in Japan with game demo downloads...
You forgot the sega dreamcast too
I wanna piece of cake!!!
They'd have to add something super cool to a new DS for me to dessert (sic) my beloved DS Lite. Especially if it wasn't compatible with the R4. I love running my NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators along with all of my DS games from one system. :)
You usually only use the "(sic)" if you're quoting someone, not for use on your own sentence.
/grammar Nazi.
i believe if they did come out with a new version - it would have a memory card reader or some space built in so people can play mp3s, videos, etc.
anything more than that wouldn't be called a DS.
I would like to see a
-gyroscopic motion sensor like the wiimote has
-either an SD slot or internal memory for downloadable games and saving
Icing on the cake would be
- some higher resolution screens
- built in media capabilities
It definitely should interact with my Wii in someway.
obviously these are going to natural steps for hand-held gaming in the future.
Multi-touch, touch on both screens, motion sensing/orientation sensing (Already experimented with by Nintendo with various games like that Yoshi one for the GBA, as well as the Wiimotes), higher resolution screens, and probably some sort of media functionality.
Oh and SD cards are a strong possibility. Again, look at the Wii.
Whatever happens, Nintendo will probably do it right anyway. Sure, call me a fanboy but you've got to admit that Nintendo makes a good hand-held console, whichever team you're on.
I don't think it would be smart for the DS to have motion sensing, since it's a mobile device, and some people play their DS while walking, or lying in bed, etc.
Hey Engadget, if I'm right will you buy me the new GameBoy?
What are you going to give Engadget if you are wrong?
I'll write for them :)
I'd love to smash my face into that cake.
Assuming it is a DS2 and not another redesign I would count on the following:
- Better Processors (mobile gamecube level)
- Higher-Res Widescreens
- Internal Memory/Memory Card Support
- Native Wii Integration/Online Services (as opposed to a per-game basis)
- Upgradable Firmware
- $149.99
Sounds like people are more looking for not just a new DS design, but a whole new portable system. I want one too. The DS is great, but if they release a third version of the same software and capabilities on new hardware, I would be very disappointed. I'm hoping they're going to either announce more connectivity between the DS and Wii or an entirely new portable system. The former would be preferred and is also more probable.
you guys are crazy .. a whole new system? .. its the best selling console in the world for the past 3 years and its still selling .. why would they make a new system ?
ive never known a system with a 3 year life cycle.. its a redesign.. remember gamboy advance.. game boy sp.. game boy micro.. same system , redesign..
read the article....re design..
Still waiting for Guitar Hero: On Tour ;) (maybe some brilliant genius will figure out a way to mod the GBA slot to play on a normal GH controller).
Haven't picked up a DS in a while (gave my last one away)... if they do any mods to the DS then hopefully - yeah - as others stated already: internal memory would be nice.
I don't see them doing anything major with it though... if they did: different system all together.
IMHO, they need to integrate into DS what right now is done with GBA slot: rumble and extra RAM. And drop GBA slot - now there are more DSs than GBAs anyway already.
That would free up some space which can be used for SD card for DLC.
I also second larger screen.
My personal top two wishes are: mentioned above integrated rumble and bigger/better accumulator.
Agreed... they should also offer up a GB/GBC/A library for the downloading, alongside other ROMS - this shouldn't be a Wii exclusive, and is a no brainer.
I'd buy a Nintendo HDS (High definition for people who can't understand.)
What I'd like to see...
Internal Memory and a Wi-Fi link or access to download selected WiiWare/Virtual Console games.
Gameboy/GBC/GBA Virtual console.
Accelerometer and Rumble
Dual touch screens
All regular DS games compatible, no GBA port.
A bigger top screen and a keyboard at the bottom, keep the overall size it is now.
If it is a new one and not a redesign, I'll probably end up getting one about a year after it's released. If it's a redesign, I'll probably just keep my DS Lite.
I think the most obvious path for the next DS is DLC- I'm surprised downloadable games aren't a major factor in the handheld market yet, it seems like they're pretty much made for handhelds. So a DS with higher rez screens, better graphical capabilities, maybe some sort of analog stick, and some storage and they'd be set.
The new portable Nintendo console should be something like this:
-Dual touch Screen
-Multi-touch
-High res Screens
-Internal Accelerometer/Gyroscope
-Rumble pack
-Wifi connectivity
-Wii connectivity
-DS backwards compatibility
-Built in mic
-Something similar to Bluetooth
-Internal+expandable memory
-gba/gbc/gb/nes/snes/n64 virtual consoles
-internet browser
-built in camera
all that would be pretty freakin awesome.
yeah..am i missing anything?
I've been holding out with my GBA and Advanced Wars forever, and for my trip to china recently i got myself the new advanced wars and a pretty black DS. Its a great device, but like others say, it seams behind the times. Due to the stupid marketing in teh US, most of the games are crappy movie titles which is fine. I have advanced wars, i haven't stopped playing ONLY it for 6 years now. Just, be nice if it was more of a PSP killer...
I still have my original DS "phat", and would love to buy a new model! internal memory would be sweet, and a larger top screen (takes up the whole top, put the speakers on the bottom half somewhere) w/ touch would be very cool. of course, improved graphics and such are always good too!!
Same here, I'm still playing on the original phat. I might consider retiring it, but it's going to take more than a simple brighter screen, or a slightly smaller case.
Two larger screens with higher resolution.
HD upscale software for older games.
A removable second battery pack.
If they are going for more compact, how about a dobble slider controler (that when not in use will shrink the DS into the size of a GBA SP).
I would love a new DS, I've been hanging on to this one for a while even though the shoulder buttons have been broken since a few months after I got it a year and a half ago. I've been meaning to trade it in for a new one since it's out of warranty (and since I sent it in for repairs twice and it was only fixed for a few weeks), but I guess I could wait until E3. Oh wait, isn't it not as big of an event now? Would this really be the venue where they announced a new DS?
