Pandora dev board seen running applications, games
So much for the naysayers, huh? Although the hotly-anticipated Pandora is still doing its thang without a case in the most recent videos, the dev board is definitely handling the FinalBurn Alpha arcade emulator and MPlayer video viewer with ease. Yeah, we're still clueless about a definitive launch date, but feel free to hit the read link for a couple of clips sure to get you even more anxious for this thing's arrival.

Well, this will certainly be useful when all video tapes are destroyed in the second coming of Jesus.

JohnTitor @ Apr 11th 2008 10:14PM
do not get a GP2X, I had one (before all the M33 stuff was out) the GP2X is hampered by having no GPU and is still limited in software by provided by Gamepark Holdings. The Pandora is built by the developers for the developers.

Am I the only one that has no idea what this is?
Ruben @ Apr 11th 2008 8:46PM
No, your not, because theres a ton of devices with the name Pandora in it. I assume its that hand-held UMPC, but then again, it might not be at all. It could be a new Pandora battery which received a screen for no reason. It could also be a device made for the Pandora music service, like the Pandora media player.
Stop naming crap Pandora!
Aguiluz @ Apr 11th 2008 9:08PM
Or... It could be a box that will blow all of us up.
(That's Pandora's Box for you sleepers out there!)

Pandora is
"It is designed as an ultra portable open source computer with gaming controls."

Although I wonder if its "hotly-anticipated"

Handheld nexuiz? Heck yes.

Non-Gamers heaven.
Gamers will stick to the PSP and high quality commercial games thank you.
andres @ Apr 11th 2008 10:25PM
open source...
Mikelx215 @ Apr 11th 2008 10:36PM
Non-gamers? I think you mean retro-gamers. You young-ins today with your new fangled Portable Playstations and your three hundred and sixty XBoxes don't know the meaning of real games.
SCUMMVM, Super Nintendo, Playstation One, rumor has it the Pandora will emulate N64 games as well. Look at all the interfaces it has, the thing was made for emulation.
It's heaven for nostalgic retro gamers. Me, I'd get it if it could play roguelikes decently. Usually they're a pain in the ass on mobile systems, but the Pandora will have the better chunk of a keyboard.
ethana2 @ Apr 11th 2008 10:49PM
ZSNES FTW
morphius @ Apr 12th 2008 1:42AM
What kind of moron buys a PSP to play games?
Chip @ Apr 11th 2008 10:32PM
There are some new pics of the actual hardware on the developer blog: http://www.openpandora.org/blog.php
Good stuff. Can't wait for these to ship.

You had me until you said retro gaming and never mentioned NES, C64, or Atari
atomicthumbs @ Apr 11th 2008 11:25PM
It will emulate anything N64 and before that.
NES, SNES, C64, and anything else you can name.

...not perfect yet, but very much closer than it was a month ago.
You know, the page actually loads.
FRZ @ Apr 11th 2008 10:57PM
I am a little bit puzzled though. If this thing is supposedly the same size as the DS, the screen still looks too small. Why doesn't it fill the whole top section of the device? There is still room for a bigger screen.
Chip @ Apr 12th 2008 9:01AM
Because that's just the OMAP3530 dev board. The only hardware that the dev board has in common with the final product is the SoC. The developers are using them to work on the OS and software while the hardware gets finished up. Click the link in my other post to see the actual Pandora hardware.

Well, at least it's highly anticipated by me (but not hotly, I prefer cold weather)... I've been saving the money since a few years ago (I was about to buy a GP2X when I read about it)
This will kick all the portable gaming devices a$$es
By the way, this is not an UMPC.. This is a gaming device, capable of running almost any Linux software, but meant to be a gaming device

"Pandora dev board seen running applications, games"
...and The Simpsons! (Or possibly Futurama)
