Russia wants all WiFi devices to be registered
Sure, we've seen the occasional loony look down upon open WiFi access, but Russia is apparently out to really slow down wireless adoption with its latest directive. Reportedly, the Russian Mass Media, Communications and Cultural Protection Service (or Rossvyazokhrankultura for short -- no seriously, we swear) is looking to have every user of a WiFi-enabled device obtain permission and register said device before hopping on the world wide web. Even worse, it seems as if every single wireless transmitter and device must be registered, meaning that technophiles will be filling out heaps of paperwork in order to get their handset, laptop, DS Lite, PC and hacked-up Foleo online (legally) via their home-based access point. We're hearing that registering a single PDA or phone would take around ten days, while signing up a new home network would be even more painstaking. We'll spare you the snide In Soviet Russia... remarks, but feel free to concoct your own below.[Via Wi-Fi Net News]

Fake. And that is actually some really stupid interpretation of truth.

you have to register wifi device by march 18th of 2008. if you don't they can confiscate the device and fined you 1000 rubles (around 24 rub=1$)
some shit never changes....

This is needed in the "New" Russia to control Western spies and those that wish to userp the accomplishments of the glorious Vladimir Putin. Soon the "New" Russia will give rise to a "New" Soviet state and we will control all the resources of Europe and beyond.a
There is no WiFi in Bilingua cafe that is pictured on the illustration to this post, gygygy )
In soviet russia, you fill out 20m of paper work for 10m of wireless
It's never stop to amaze me what things ppl around the world think of Russia, especially americans. Bears, snow, tha'ts it.. Oh year and total state control.
What you can't see that it's not any worse then in USA, and again: I have about 10 wi-fi devices, none of them i gonna register. This is complete gibberish.
Man, the whole story is a crap. By the current law you have to get license for hot spots that charge money for access. Why people trust so blindly to some idiot from Russia that posted original story on fontanka.ru. If take this thing as real then you would have to register microwaves as well, since they emit frequency (0.3–3 GHz) which in the same band of the Wi-Fi. Then that would be funny.
So Engadget, edit or delete that :)
Perhaps the iron curtain will be converted into a giant antenna and broadcast wifi to the world. They're just registering the inventory for components they'll need later.
In search of reaction over distance to big electric spark, Marconi wireless happens. Russia tries to suppress all variations ever since.
In Soviet Russia, rick rolls YOU!
All your wi-fi are belong to us
HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Sucks to be in Russia!!!
it was fake.
I wonder if the government is going to sell that survey of what wi-fi devices everyone owns. A very good survey to own in the marketing department.
