HP iPAQ 900 series smartphone hits the FCC

HP's iPAQ 900 series smartphones haven't exactly had the smoothest of releases ('round these parts at least) since they were first announced way back in September of last year, but one of 'em has at least managed to recently trickle out into the hands of the lucky folks at the FCC, which could possibly indicate that it's actually nearing a US release. In case you missed it, the Windows Mobile-based phone was previously hinted as coming to AT&T in its iPAQ 910 incarnation, although the FCC unsurprisingly doesn't have anything to say about that possibility. If you want a better idea of what may be in store, however, you can find plenty of pics of the device (including a peek at its innards) and its complete manual at the link below.

I could definitely see people buying this over a Blackjack II. To me, this phone just seems more professional and business-like, while the Blackjack II is more of a college student's phone.
BrianM @ Apr 17th 2008 5:34PM
Personally I would buy this if it were not for HP continually F#@7ing their customers with continously not being willing to upgrade their units. I currently have 3 HTC devices since HTC does tend to offer upgrades to the firmare (windows mobile 5, then 6).
Ellianth @ Apr 17th 2008 10:10PM
yeah when i'm ready to upgrade my hw6955, i'm definately not getting another hp device. Plus that phone looks kinda ugly. Might be the fcc shot though.
Allan @ Apr 17th 2008 3:23PM
Why is it that that the style of these new phones have to have a similar look to the iPhone i.e. the silver frame and rounded edges just like the new blackberry thats coming out. They gotta be more original with their designs.
Heineken77 @ Apr 17th 2008 3:38PM
Blacberry 8800 came out before the iphone and this phone looks just like the blackberry.
Why does everyone always make comments about iphone or apple in topics that have nothing to do with apple OR THE POS IPHONE!!!
Allan @ Apr 17th 2008 4:04PM
Ummm sorry but im talking about the upcoming Blackberry 9000
link here
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/03/28/blackberry-9000-in-the-wild/
and they both came out after the iPhone, but what im saying is they are trying to make iPhone lookalikes and there is no denial. It is smart on their part because they will confuse customers as to what really is an iPhone, because the average consumer will settle for a cheaper iPhone lookalike.
Kyle @ Apr 17th 2008 4:37PM
How on earth does a rounded edge make it an iPhone clone?
This is seriously getting out of hand, why is this qwertyboard device now being called a ripoff of the iPhone when if anything it is merely another PPC phone of which many exist. The ubiquo 503g has the same design and rounded edges and it is not an iPhone clone, and the t-mobile dash albeit no touchscreen looks very similar.
Just because the iPhone is popular does not mean that anything that has a rounded edge and a hint of silver is a ripoff! If that were the case the iPhone ripped of the Nokia 8801, as its rounded and silver.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Apr 17th 2008 5:17PM
I see a faint at&t mobile tv button. Theres a hint
dale_nx26 @ Apr 17th 2008 7:33PM
yea i agree with OP. It's not that it has rounded edges that makes it look like iPhone, it's the metal frame. Of course anyone is welcome to post phones BEFORE the iPhone that has that same kind of frame.
But to me this look more like a ripoff to the Blackberry.
Dr. Evil @ Apr 17th 2008 8:49PM
How is this an iPhone? It looks like a Moto Q or a Blackberry to me.
You Apple people are paranoid.
holycow @ Apr 17th 2008 9:32PM
Samsung K3 is black and chrome edges and it came it BEFORE the iPhone did.
highjumpman @ Apr 17th 2008 10:57PM
I can think of lots of things with silver frames and round edges... Metal frames do provide some kind of protection, and it's a step up from HP's use of rubber frames (aka rx2790 etc), so I think it wasn't just for aesthetics alone....
Allan @ Apr 18th 2008 12:49PM
I not just talking about the metal frame. Just do a side by side comparison of their look and they are similar. It is not by coincidence they want to take a bit of the iPhone look because of its popularity. Excuse me but the "Samsung K3" shares no resemblance to the iPhone neither does the "Ubiquio" mentioned. Are you kidding me? Its not the round edges. It is their overall look. I just don't get why you guys deny these looking like an iPhone just because, o everything has to compared to an iPhone but be honest. I am not a fan of apple and im just trying to make a point.
BeyondtheTech @ Apr 17th 2008 3:25PM
With the way that HP consistently treats their current iPAQ customers, I'm surprised they are still in business.
Brighthand has quoted them saying, "HP will not be offering an operating system upgrade for currently shipping HP iPAQ devices beyond what ships on the device today -- Microsoft Windows Mobile 6. This decision comes after having evaluated the potential for delays in firmware and software updates, device recertification, and carry-over costs to our customers that are often associated with an operating system upgrade."
Once you buy an iPAQ, you're on your own from there. Heed the warning.
mymaclife @ Apr 17th 2008 6:13PM
And mind when you go into the woods... many people haven't heeded that warning either!
BeyondtheTech @ Apr 17th 2008 3:29PM
This looks pretty interesting....
Neumann @ Apr 17th 2008 3:31PM
So what is the general length between the time the FCC gets a device and the time that it hits stores? I confess, I am pretty excited about this device. Not much larger than my Blackjack but WiFi, GPS, touchscreen, HSDPA 7.2 (I believe). I plan to have this be my next phone, but I don't want to wait 50 years for it...
PS3guy @ Apr 17th 2008 3:43PM
HP need to stop making phone and stick with making good Laptop, HP phone suck period.
Richard Lai @ Apr 17th 2008 3:53PM
Actually, HP laptops suck too. They should just stick with making good servers.
TareX @ Apr 17th 2008 4:04PM
HP Oak should be a pretty neat phone (provided the touchscreen is hi-res VGA)
Abuzar @ Apr 17th 2008 10:14PM
This looks like a pretty nice phone.
mark balcerak @ Apr 17th 2008 3:48PM
Im so sick of windows mobile!
Bring on the Android!
TareX @ Apr 17th 2008 4:08PM
Same here. I only hope the HTC Dream doesn't disappoint me. I'm building too many hopes on it, especially the UI (after seeing TAT's Cascades UI)...
Let's see. I hope it's nothing like TouchFlo... something a bit more cheerful and capable please, HTC.
Quikboy @ Apr 17th 2008 8:44PM
If you're sick of WinMo, don't use it. Simple as that. Go to the store and get an Android phone or any other phone.
I personally like WinMo, but if you obviously have no care about this phone, besides the fact that it runs your least favorites mobile OS, then you're comment really doesn't belong here. I'm getting tired of haters filling up the comments.
psxp @ Apr 17th 2008 3:50PM
HP should just give it up.. they screwed up their iPaq fanbase with the goings on of the past few years. lack of updates, lack of decent devices.. the likes of HTC and others have caught up and surpased HP.
I'd rather have a BB than another HP .
For laptops/printers, its a different story..
PS3guy @ Apr 17th 2008 3:58PM
For printer I'll stick with Xerox or Canon.
dazepro @ Apr 17th 2008 4:59PM
I was wondering, and not to bring up the iPhone, but are these photos from the FCC and if so, than why weren't pictures of the iPhone up when it was going through the same process every gadget has to go through?
Steffen Jobbs @ Apr 17th 2008 5:16PM
At first glance I thought it was a new BlackBerry. It doesn't look much like an iPhone at all except for the chrome ring. That HP way too busy to look anything like an iPhone.
maff @ Apr 17th 2008 5:18PM
windows mobile 95, more like!!!
Tim @ Apr 17th 2008 5:21PM
Ahhh... it's a Blackberry 9000 Ripoff!!!
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/03/28/blackberry-9000-in-the-wild/
ScOObyDoo @ Apr 17th 2008 6:26PM
Except for the fact that the iPaq 900 was announced last year, and the first spy shots of what might be the Blackberry 9000 didn't pop up till last month.
Tim @ Apr 17th 2008 6:27PM
Details...
mymaclife @ Apr 17th 2008 6:03PM
There's a poor photographer trapped behind the screen!
King Mook Mook @ Apr 17th 2008 6:30PM
Yes, but does this play Crysis?
DB @ Apr 17th 2008 6:37PM
Errr. Ugly. Does anyone care about this phone? Really? It looks awful and it runs an awful OS. And its big. Did I mention it's real ugly?
phanbouy @ Apr 17th 2008 7:58PM
looks like the Blackjack's "special" cousin.
i wonder if it ships with a free virus like their USB drives
iphone-lover @ Apr 17th 2008 9:38PM
I still believe the iPhone is the best mobile phone in the world today. This iPaq will not create the same fever that the iPhone has created.

phanbouy @ Apr 17th 2008 9:46PM
STFU. now.
Abuzar @ Apr 18th 2008 1:32AM
WOW.
You are such a tool. The iPhone can be great for certain things, but it's certainly not a well rounded smart phone. Certainly not the greatest phone ever. That title goes to my Nokia 3360.
Tyson @ Apr 18th 2008 1:11AM
Man they just robbed RIM on the design.
As to the Iphone, I'm not going to hate on it but I am going to say 1. its not professional. 2. its not great for sending messages that a business person needs to send 3. There have been phones like it before. Ok it has multitouch blah blah get technical but HTC has much better phones I have seen overseas. This asian guy pulled out a phone with live tv 3g wifi office movies a nintendo emulator among other things and it had a touch screen and a keyboard. The Iphone is great it is not perfect, get over it. People who never had any features on there phone get and iphone and are so amazed like its the second coming of christ. Get over it there are other phone out there with functionality that other people want/ need; not everyone wants an Iphone.
For the records, I have an LG Prada for going out, and a bb 8800 for work because in a court room you can bring an Iphone because it has a camera hence its not for business people.
Abuzar @ Apr 18th 2008 1:31AM
I personally only use Windows Mobile phones(Had a Cingular 8125, then T-mobile Shadow, then 8525 and I'm getting a Tilt in a couple of days hopefully) but I do have to say one thing about the iPhone, the touchscreen is great!
I would never buy an iPhone because of the software on there, but I would love to have a Windows Mobile phone with a glass screen instead of the crappy plastic screens they use and have a nice touch screen that detects the slightest touch.
The glass screen is important too! I guess I've been spoiled by my Zune.
Karl Hackswell @ Apr 18th 2008 9:42AM
Nice camera, is that an Olympus DSLR?
Laughing Man @ Apr 18th 2008 10:35AM
iPhone software isn't that bad.....once you hack it and fix all that stuff. And I am with Karl, screw the phone....that is a cool camera.
