Pittsburgh museum plans "largest national" robotics exhibition
Heads-up Pittsburgh residents and robot lovers across the universe: an all new exhibition is coming to the Steel City next year, and it's got high, high hopes. The $3.4 million display, which is slated to be "permanent," will be housed in the Carnegie Science Center and go by the not-at-all-puzzling title of "roboworld." The installation is expected to house an "array of mechanized devices," and given that it's being billed as the "largest and most comprehensive nationwide on robotics," we'd say it's got a lot to live up to. Of course, we'll be utterly shocked if it even compares to the now-closed Robot Museum in Nagoya, Japan, but we suppose we'll have to see for ourselves when the doors fling open in Spring 2009.

I might have to go to this. I live right out side of the burgh so its not too far away.
Andrew @ Apr 17th 2008 10:46AM
i live in the burgh and as a mechanical engineer i absolutely can't wait for this to open

It's about time the Carnegie Science Center updated its permanent displays... too bad I'm not still in school taking field trips there every year.

It's an exhibition (of new tech) not a museum display.

And to your left, you can clearly see innocent humans being slaughtered by the U.S.M.C UCAV units after they were "liberated" by Skynet.
And if you look to your right, you'll see the famous robot, "iCyborg" which ended the life of Steve Jobs when he tried to deactivate him using a robot deactivator on his iPhone.
That was a glorious day for all robot kind indeed.

I can't wait for this. I recently moved to pittsburgh and was a little disappointed at the amount of things to do here this is going to be great!
Andrew @ Apr 17th 2008 11:17AM
if you can't find stuff to do in pittsburgh then you must have something against all things entertainment...i mean honestly, there are clubs, 3 professional sports teams, the theatre district, a collection a museums, the south side, the waterfront, the strip district, and an assortment of parks.

don't forget Kennywood, Sandcastle, like 50 golf courses, Seven Springs and Hidden Valley within an hour, Idlewild, Station Square - which has Hard Rock, concerts, and a dock for the gateway clipper fleet...
I mean come on man, it's more like what ISN'T there to do here.

I had no idea there was so much to do in Pittsburgh. I thought all they did was drink beer and freeze their butts off.

Good to see some modern robotics show up in the most cutting edge western Pennsylvanian city.
Go Penguins!
robotify @ Apr 17th 2008 11:22AM
Don't worry. Cutting edge robots have been in Western PA for the past several decades, thanks to CMU's robotics institute (one of the, if not the, most cutting edge robotics institutions worldwide). This exhibit will just help spread the robot love to the public, and will include the Robot Hall of Fame, which, while being around for the past half decade or so and inducting new robots every year, has only existed in internet form.
Woohoo for Pittsburgh robotics!

I can see the placards now: "Benevolent Leader 1: Humanoid Control Model", "Benevolent Leader 2: Termination Model", "Benevolent Leader 3: Termination Disposal Model"...

Good.... Now we know where the first strike against the humans will come from

When I think of good places to keep robots, the first place that comes to mind is the heart of the "Rust Belt"

You missed the part where Carnegie Mellon University and the National Robotics Engineering Center are within 3 miles. As in, the people who built:
Boss: http://www.tartanracing.org/
Crusher: http://www.rec.ri.cmu.edu/projects/crusher/index.htm
ModSnake: http://download.srv.cs.cmu.edu/~biorobotics/projects/modsnake/modsnake.html
And a whole bunch of other amazing robots. It is easily the most advanced robotics institute in the country and likely the in the world too.
thatkidmattt @ Apr 17th 2008 12:41PM
Also: the University of Pittsburgh has an excellent School of Engineering, infinitely better then Penn State's.
Also Also: The Carnegie Science center has really cool laser shows in their planetarium.

Oh no you didn't!
Atleast our football team is respectab.... oh wait...
In all seriousness, I am not sure what the real difference between Pitt and PSU's engineering programs is. Both programs are top notch.
CMU is head over heels on both, however.

As a Tartan Alumnus, I'm excited to see the school flexing its robotic muscle.

This concept was done by Roto Studio(www.rotostudio.com) where I used to work, and their work is just fantastic as usual. ;)
