Intel's Skulltrail QX9775 hits 6GHz, manages not to spontaneously combust
Yeah, we've seen other mad scientists take way more antiquated chips to higher figures on the GHz scale, but can that cryogenically cooled P4 handle all those SSE4.1 instructions? The latest feat of overclocking prowess comes to us courtesy of K|ngp|n, who has apparently taken Skulltrail beyond the 6GHz mark. You'll also notice the 1,716MHz FSB (!!!) and the fact that it's sizzling along at 1.953-volts -- but hey, no one said running Crysis would be easy, right?

cRyogenic perhaps!
OneLove @ Apr 18th 2008 5:27PM
I was just about to say..."but will i run crysis", but then I saw..."-- but hey, no one said running Crysis would be easy, right?"
a @ Apr 18th 2008 3:46PM
I wouldn't call it 'spontaneous', but still amazing that it's not on fire... Now how about popping that GIANT heat sink off for a few seconds? :)
Fire Marshall @ Apr 18th 2008 3:47PM
Requires a magazine and automated feed mechanism to reload chips as they fry.
A.C.E.R. @ Apr 18th 2008 5:02PM
Yeah, that chip probably lasts a couple weeks at that voltage.
OSnix*-geek @ Apr 18th 2008 3:49PM
I almost thought it said gynecological, my mind is clearly in the gutter.
Just a quick question, why are we using IE to blog? Firefox and Safari both have spell check when you're filling out forms. No reason for the clear typo's.
Phil Ringsmuth @ Apr 18th 2008 4:04PM
Ah, the irony is so thick you could spread it with a butter knife.
superklye @ Apr 18th 2008 4:20PM
hahahahahaha Phil, I'm dying over here. :-D
Neebs @ Apr 18th 2008 4:29PM
But it will never save you from the dreaded extra apostrophe.

Quikboy @ Apr 18th 2008 4:44PM
If you get IE7 Pro add-on, you do get the spell check function. (which I've found to be even niftier and up to date than the default ones in Firefox).
I also noticed your browser's spell check didn't catch the "typo's" in your comment. :^)
Eddie @ Apr 18th 2008 5:03PM
I nearly peed myself when I read Phil's comment.
Oh good times.
OSnix*-geek @ Apr 18th 2008 5:12PM
Yah I guess my browser flubbed. Oh well. At least it would have caught an extremely erroneous spelling of a word.
Jordan @ Apr 18th 2008 7:55PM
I'm surrreee it flubbed all right...
phanbouy @ Apr 18th 2008 3:49PM
of course, if it ever did spontaneously combust we could echo a new meme for all teh intarnets to hear:
FLAMING SKULLTRAIL!
lt @ Apr 18th 2008 3:49PM
I wonder if that would run Doom
YoMomma @ Apr 18th 2008 7:06PM
im pretty sure it will run my momma
Jordan @ Apr 18th 2008 7:55PM
I'm pretty sure you two guys are the most original people ever...
Abuzar @ Apr 19th 2008 12:12AM
No, it's not stable enough.
Austin @ Apr 18th 2008 3:56PM
Hey, give proper credit. The user k|ngp|n is the one who did the overclocking and set the records; FUGGER just reported.
mattyuk @ Apr 18th 2008 3:58PM
These guys obviously don't know much about overclocking, a 1716MHz FSB speed is no big deal, I have my 3Ghz e6300 at 1720Mhz FSB on a 780i motherboard, hell I've even taken it to 1880Mhz. Some boards have managed to hit 500Mhz+, the bus is Quad Pumped so the speed would read as 2000Mhz in CPU-Z.
Phil Ringsmuth @ Apr 18th 2008 4:09PM
I have absolutely no idea what you just said, but I believe you!
phanbouy @ Apr 18th 2008 4:16PM
"the bus is Quad Pumped"
that's what your girlfriend told me
System48 @ Apr 18th 2008 4:54PM
No one else has done an FSB overclock this high on a Skulltrail platform.
roflercopterer @ Apr 18th 2008 5:17PM
Those guys are xtreme systems, if there is anything to now about overclocking, they know it.
mattyuk @ Apr 18th 2008 5:42PM
All I'm saying is the bus speed is nothing to write home about, irrelevant of whatever motherboard it was done on. The object of importance here is the CPU, not the mobo, and 1716Mhz is achievable on almost any overclocking motherboard currently out.
o29 @ Apr 18th 2008 7:18PM
"You'll also notice the 1,716MHz FSB (!!!)"
He's criticizing the incredulity in that comment, not anything in the article itself.
Steve A. @ Apr 19th 2008 4:37AM
Yeah, that FSB speed is no biggie. While it's not the same chipset, I have a new rendering box as my workstation on the way from Dell. Dual, quad core xeon chips (X5482) - their factory front-side-bus is already at 1600MHz. I believe the new mac pros also offer the same chips on the top end systems.
However the core speed of this overclock is impressive.
Shinigami @ Apr 18th 2008 4:09PM
But can it run Crysis in software rendering? xD
xanium4332 @ Apr 18th 2008 7:43PM
Oh come on, that's just not funny.
Josh Havener @ Apr 18th 2008 4:12PM
In other news, said computer is to blame for burning down an entire neighborhood due to extreme heat output.
phanbouy @ Apr 18th 2008 4:15PM
gives a new meaning to computer store FRY'S
digitallysick @ Apr 18th 2008 4:13PM
so lets see pics of the cooling setup? how fast can they run it stable/overclocked? i would be happy with a stable constant 5ghz
Hotrod @ Apr 18th 2008 4:17PM
Off topic, but digitallysick, you have the sweetest avatar ever. Where did you get it from?
digitallysick @ Apr 18th 2008 4:51PM
I found it on the interwebs somewhere, if you google xray skeleton gun or something like that and found the image.
gittenlucky @ Apr 18th 2008 10:12PM
Cooling setup. I found it by looking at his scores he has posted, there is a link to his site.

Hotrod @ Apr 18th 2008 4:16PM
Seriously though, this could probably run crysis at 60fps if paired with a 9800gx2 and skulltrail running at 6ghz. I'm beginning to think Crysis is just badly coded.
Conor Maher @ Apr 18th 2008 4:26PM
Nah Crysis has the same "problem" as FarCry, its so future proof that it wont run well for another year or two, I cant wait to see it at 1920*1200 60fps :)
James Cameron @ Apr 18th 2008 4:45PM
@Conor Maher
Future proof. LOL! In 2 years, people won't give an ass crack about this game.
ddub @ Apr 18th 2008 8:22PM
I don't know if its futureproof, and it's definitely not presentproof.
smk @ Apr 19th 2008 5:01AM
I often wonder why they make games like that (isn't playable "forever" then some other new cool game comes out - and it doesn't play well on new hardware - no matter what you throw in that case)... and what do developers use to play the games to begin with (someone's gotta test the game)?
Abuzar @ Apr 19th 2008 8:24AM
I'm sorry but do you notice a HUGE difference COD4 and Crysis? My 8800GT(1GB version) gets more than 90FPS in COD4 with everything maxed out at 1600x1200. I doubt I would get anything close to that in Crysis.
It's just a badly coded game. Sure it looks better, but the performance hit it takes relative to other games is just not acceptable seeing as it's only marginally better looking.
sam @ Apr 18th 2008 4:21PM
that overclock is a little scary, 45nm cpu's degrade when past 1.36025v so 1.93v is asking for trouble. The speed is nice but i doubt it would do 48hrs of prime95, the cpu would probably die during that due to the stupid amount of volts.
Conor Maher @ Apr 18th 2008 4:29PM
Obviously that was just a suicide bench....
Did you think he was gonna run a 6ghz Skulltrail at nearly 2v 24/7? :D
It should do 4ghz easily at 1.35v 1.4v though which would be nice for 24/7
SirMasterboy @ Apr 18th 2008 5:10PM
I know a friend who runs his qx6850 at 4.5Ghz prime95 stable 24/7 and that is a 65nm processor so I would hope that a smaller 45nm could at least do better for 24/7 stable.
Sime @ Apr 18th 2008 4:34PM
