Pioneer intros the NavGate AVIC-F900BT and AVIC-F700BT GPS units
If Pioneer's AVIC-F500BT satnav unit got you all hot and bothered, then big brothers NavGate AVIC-F900BT and AVIC-F700BT should totally wreck your lifestyle. The new units sport all kinds of funky functions, like a 5.8-inch WVGA touchscreen display, built in DVD player (CD for the F700BT), 3D mapping with text to speech, PMP functionality with playback of MPEG, DivX, MP3, and WMA files, plus Bluetooth support for cell phones and the ability to manage up to 300 contacts. The do-it-all units also feature SD card support and USB jacks. Both new models will go on sale in Europe, Russia, Australia, and the States sometime in June, no word on pricing yet. You can watch a demo of the unit in action in the video after the break. C'mon... you know you want to.

Looks sick, but i would've liked a 7" screen for an in-dash navi.
OneLove @ Apr 21st 2008 10:44AM
Did he say jigga bytes? lol

this thing is ok another mid range deck which im getting a little tired of seeing. Pioneer and others seem to be lacking in the UI and features. They should have browsers built in with 3g/ wifi built in. If im gona spend this kinda money on a deck youd be better off with one of the many windows car computer things drivesoft etc which dont seem to get any airtime on engadget for whatever reason. The user interface really needs some work its not so pretty anymore pretty much minor improvments and rearangments with each new release but really its the same crap, looks like its been put together by amatuer computer programmers. HARDRIVES WITH FUNCTIONALITY i dont wana hear about how its not clear if you can burn a CDR or upload mp3s via usb theres a million products out there that do you are no diffrent. Also 30gb HDD on your top of the line 2400$ deck the z1 is weak with the price per Gb as low as 25cents i want a min of 160gb these guys need some serious outside competition to get on the ball apple im looking at you if we want to see any features faster then the spoon feading we are currently getting

Well, considering that the horizontal size of a 7" screen (which looks like 16:9 widescreen) would be 6.1", it would be very difficult to fit that into a 4" x 7" double-DIN slot unless you went completely touchscreen.
Pokemon @ Apr 21st 2008 10:03AM
Yea, 7inch screen would be lovely.
BTW,
I like what you've done to cover the AOL sign in the top right corner.
The New Guy @ Apr 21st 2008 10:09AM
Cover what AOL sign??
rock99rock @ Apr 21st 2008 10:44AM
YEA dude shutup!!!
pokemon @ Apr 21st 2008 2:58PM
Engadget is owned by AOL. I give Engadget credit for fighting, but AOL is breaking the down. Now AOL has a Big UGLY sign in the right upper part of the page that says AOL Tech.
Keep up the fight Engadget!
kastonie @ Apr 21st 2008 10:05AM
the maps are stored on the built in jigga bytes
The New Guy @ Apr 21st 2008 10:08AM

brickwood @ Apr 21st 2008 10:26AM

Musouka @ Apr 21st 2008 11:47AM
That's the correct way to pronounce it, BTW. Look at a similar word like "Gigantic" and how it is pronounced.

rock99rock @ Apr 21st 2008 10:45AM
This is all childs play compared to the carputer. Probably 3-4 times as expensive to boot.
cclaunch @ Apr 21st 2008 11:18AM
I was thinking carputer, but if this thing's SD slot is SDHC, it might make me rethink that.
crow610 @ Apr 21st 2008 1:17PM
I've been thinking about building a carputer also which can be built for around half the cost and more enjoyable to the hobbyist. The carputer can surely do all that this one can do but a whole lot more.

I'm going to flip my car so many times trying to watch Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle on this thing.

This has been on the European Websites for like two months.
I am waiting for the 500BT, here is a link:

Some of these units are nice, but it seems to me that a car computer would be a better investment: more power, flexibility, and upgradeability, and less expensive overall (or at least comparable in cost, but you're still getting far more for your money).
I know of quite a few out there, but the best one I'm aware of is made by DriveSoft (drivesoft.net).
Aalaap @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:12AM
can it play MP3s gaplessly?
Allen @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:50PM
Someone mentioned a car computer: I just do not need that level of distraction when I am driving.
Any computer in a car needs to work without any need for interfacing beyond what we already do with buttons and toggles. This is why iDrive is so hated, it just takes so much to do.
Anyway, this is a decent unit, TOUCHSCREEN! YES! That is a seller, I don't have to fiddle with some wheel or press buttons just touch the thing.
