Honda nav system helps you steer clear of crime, just like your momma taught you
Honda has a new GPS navigation system for Japan that taps into the police database and points out seedy areas on the map. The device can point out specific locations that cars have been stolen or broken into in the past, as well as generally sketchy districts, which basically means that if you weren't paranoid before you got this installed, you certainly will be afterwards. Honda is launching the service today, and we're sure criminals the world over are already wondering what one of these nav systems will go for on the black market.

This is so Dave Chappelle.
Exactly what I was thinking.
The racist mode on your GPS.
this is so TAKESHI KITANO.
Idiot, where does it mention the GPS can determine race. Your comment is highly racist.
Similar maps for the US are being planned. Word is, the entire metropolitan areas of Miami, Detroit, DC... all hell, the whole US is being ID'd as sketchy.
Of, course. DC does have the worst crime rate and the bulk of it is in the White House.
whats the post say? all i see is GTAIV

Soooo closeeeee
It says "Make sure you steal cars from good neighborhoods so that you have a higher chance of finding one with this device and therefore increasing the resale value of said car."
I wonder if the voice changes to a more colloquial dialect when near the nefarious areas?
"Turn left to avoid dis skanky bitch-ass hood, yo"
LOL!
:D
Thanks for your comment ;).
Love.
that.
comment!
The real purpose of this is not to tell people to avoid sketchy areas. It's to enable the scenario where I can tell my car's GPS "I want to score some crack".
or hookers... or illegal guns..... or IED's!!!
+
"Crack Dealer" will be a new optional destination:
I can hear the soothing GPS-voice say "In 200 feet, stop and ask for a guy named 'Tiny'" now.
I can already hear the furious accusations of racism that are going to crop up when this thing arrives.
Nah, they'll just change it from "sketchy neighborhood" to "racially-diverse neighborhood"
Bush administration will welcome GPSs that will alert you to Red Alert Zones and Orange Alert Zones...which is the entire country!
Uhh... give it a rest already. He'll be gone in less than a year.
I had an idea like this- basically a program for GPS-enabled devices to tell you your risk of death based on where you were. Turn down the wrong alley, and a "Warning Will Robinson" goes off. You could enter details too, like "skydiving" too see if you really wanted to take the chance. I called it the "Death-o-meter"
will they mark out the different 'hoods' according to gang colors?
Yes.
Black.
LOL! Black... that's hilarious.
"Honda is launching the service today, and we're sure criminals the world over are already wondering what one of these nav systems will go for on the black market."
Aww gotta love the irony. =)
Dude, Japan is so safe this seams like overkill for 'em, but for the rest of the world it aint that usefull, I already know where not to go with my nu car
... outside
Damn that shite would be red lighting every single street on the map
betta get my a sticker saying
BADASS MOTHA ON BOARD
STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM MA HOOPDY
What???
lol, hoopdy...
Dude--Japan isn't that safe anymore. Compared to the U.S., sure, but you'll never find a more retched hive of scum and villany than the dirty-old-man-filled back alleys in Japan. They have to lock up their kids now to keep them away from the pervs.

Forget selling the nav system, you can simply rip the car apart and make more with spareparts alone.
Isn't this just going to generate more crime?
I mean, if we're talking about trying to help the average citizen avoid the "seedy" areas, then criminals will use this technology to judge where the those citizens are parking their cars now as a result of the system's suggestions. It also gives criminals information on what areas are being focused on by police, which is tantamount to tuning into the police radio frequency.
This just sounds like a bad idea all around. It puts fear into the law-abiding person and enables the outlaw.
Don't worry, I'm sure they'll make this unavailable to bad guys. Only the good guys will know where the cops are targeting.
If the Honda navs in Japan are anything like mine I wouldn't trust it @ all.
Seriously- mine totally sucks. I drive over a 3 year old road every day where I look like I'm flying through the air for about 1/2 mile. My car's got 07 maps.
If it can't take me to a bridge properly how should I trust that I'll be kept out of whatever area Vic Mackey from The Shield is working in?
You can buy and trust on this gps service.
or
you can use common sense.
Common sense? I still haven't been able to find the link to download my 1.5 patch. Maybee comon sense 2.0 is available by this point...
Whatever city you live in, you should already know which areas to avoid. This is where "common sense" comes in. However, when visiting an unfamiliar area, it can be quite easy to accidentally find yourself in the middle of a scary area, afraid and not knowing whether a left turn will help you get out or take you deeper into danger. I think this would really only be useful to visitors or newcomers to a particular area, but in those cases, it could be very valuable indeed.
I already have a similar system that keeps me from being a victim of crime. It was designed in the early 1900s, adopted by the army in 1911, and runs even when the car is off and the battery flat since it is fueled by .45 ACP. The best part is that there is no mounting hardware involved since I just keep it in the glove box.
Loved it....
reminds me of www.spotcrime.com. They have an iphone page too, at www.spotcrime.com/iphone.php.
Now if they could combine that with under bridge crash reports, that'll be useful to some truck/bus drivers: "And ahead, you'll be stuck under a bridge. Please proceed."
i got excited. i was hoping it would tell me where every cop car is. That would be the ultimate radar detector.
This kind of reminds me of an idea I had, involving a carputer. This would really only work if everyone had the software but...
Imagine a GPS that you could hit a button when you spot a police officer and it sends it via internet to other GPSs. Then when you're driving you see on your GPS where other people marked police, and how long ago they were spotted (maybe symbolized by a fading color).
That would be sweet. Now integrate that with user-informed traffic, weather, and accident conditions, and you're set.
What use is a GPS that only directs you to Bel-air?
What is odd is that Japan actually has one of the lowest crime rates in our "more-developed" nations of the world.
All this does is tell criminals where to go!
"Map is now displaying drug dealer icons..." :)
Japan has created a new way to tote fear. I expected the US to make this first.
This thing needs have real time updates.
For example if I'm driving in down town Montreal after a hockey game ends, it will warn me to stay away from the riot zone.
