Video: LM3Labs' AirStrike interactive holograms, because they can
We're not sure why they did it, but LM3Labs have a developed an interactive, gesture-controlled hologram technology called AirStrike. Presumably, the technology can be applied to advertising or as an event novelty. We imagine this is about as close to a God Complex as any of us non-surgeons will ever get. See what we mean in the video after the break.

Wow, saw this image early in the morning while I was still groggy. Looked really creepy. Eek.
nedy78 @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:38AM
Are you talking about the girl or the guy's hair? ...HairStrike!
Sachin @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:31PM
"We're not sure why they did it."
Why WOULDN'T you do it?
The Future @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:35AM
This will be the future of computer screens, movies and television]]
Give it about a couple of decades
Esat Dedezade @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:51AM
Hopeully.
But the biggest investors will be sex doll companies/stip clubs e.t.c.
You don't need to pay a stripper hologram to work.
o_O
OneLove @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:30AM
Have you ever been to a strip club? how is that the same?
Esat Dedezade @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:37AM
Off course I've been to a strip cluc, it's exactly the same.
It's full of women in long trench coats with vintage cameras showing us film strips that they recorded.
Have I been to a strip club?
Psch.
CrazyasIndian @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:37AM
wow that was lame. You can see it being projected onto a clear sheet of glass, and all he can do is make it appear or disappear in two different gradients... WOW!
merf1350 @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:43AM
And that's more than you can do. That's actually rather impressive, even for infant technology.
CrazyasIndian @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:46AM
Rofl merf, its not impressive, i saw this kinda stuff at universal studios about 3 years ago :(
Jake Tobak @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:00AM
That's how it works. Were you expecting a volumetric display?
JX @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:39PM
"Were you expecting a volumetric display?"
Some companies have already been developing volumetric displays actually, and they are way better than this.
Harkonian @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:27PM
Unless the definition of hologram has changed very recently this is not a hologram:
Holography (from the Greek, όλος-hòlòs whole + γραφή-grafè writing, drawing) is the science of producing holograms; it is a form of photography that allows an image to be recorded in three dimensions.
As far as I can tell, that is a flat representation of a creepy looking chic.
tintin @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:39AM
So...when does it come with nude girls and perfect interaction?
Rich @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:43AM
Um, ok... More like a reflection than a hologram.
Mark @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:43AM
its like star wars.
yes .. bring on the porn.
Jetexas @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:52AM
I was waiting the entire video for him to wave his hands out to the sides and rip her jacket open ...
NHAnimator @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:19AM

I beat you to a grammatically correct and legible quote. :)
dajimmers @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:20AM
Yeah but still a misquote nonetheless. "You're."
Princesses under attack don't have time to avoid contractions.
redpill101 @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:22AM
ill get you next time (en)gadget!!!
Kattleox @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:06AM
Now, can they integrate this with some other animations? Or, even better, with sony's water dragon thing?
sully @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:11AM
Occasionally the holo-shed breaks and everything becomes real.
Jeff @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:56PM
hahahahah
Neeko @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:11AM
That was cool and CREEPY.. The girl looked like the A.I character in Resident Evil..."Your all gonna die"....CREEPY little girl.
Now if this was a true hologram that it would really be impressive.
J Zulkeski @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:12AM
When I saw it called "Air Strike" I thought we were going to get to see her getting bitch-slapped.
Alan Fabian @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:15AM
Reflection or hologram..you got to admit, it is where we are going. Amazing!
tallgrave @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:15AM
It's very interesting.
Only in subject's moving to the gesture.
Homeboy @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:16AM
Great! Now Napoleon Dynamite never has to get a real girlfriend.
Glenn @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:22AM
Not much interaction, but interesting nonetheless. Guess the technology has a ways to go.
Danbo @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:23AM
Quite impressive I suppose, but it's just back projection onto glass isn't it? Saw half a dozen of these in a museum in Caesarea, Israel, in Oct 2007, talking figures from history of Caesarea; non-interactive (although you could turn them on and off), but much the same principal.
Reminds me of the Museum Guide idea in the film "The Time Machine"; best bit of a seriously underwhelming film...
BluesK1d @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:24AM
Yeah this is definitely a step in a cool direction but Im not sure they can call it a hologram considering its missing that pesky third dimension.
P.W. Fenton @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:26AM
Not a hologram at all. A simple projection. Disney did it better 25 years ago.
Derk Kooi @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:41AM
The girl reminds me of... F.E.A.R. :S
Fall-Apart @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:21AM
"We imagine this is about as close to a God Complex as any of us non-surgeons will ever get."
Also as close to a real girl as anyone with that haircut whose name isn't Lenny Kravitz will ever get...
OneLove @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:33AM
...I could be playing COD4 right now.
Luis Menchaca @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:40AM
So, where's the "hologram" part in that video? O.o
Lonecow @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:59AM
At 01:26 it looks like he is leaning in to kiss her.
Tristan @ Apr 22nd 2008 7:29PM
I noticed that too.... so.disturbing.
ma5t3rw1tt @ Apr 22nd 2008 11:10AM
I like the effect when he moved in hand down, it was like rain or something. That effect was neat as hell. Now only we had something like that for Compiz Fusion?
