PlayStation Home beta adding more users this Fall -- in other words, delayed

After hitting delays already, we can't say that this was the PlayStation Home press release we've been expecting. Nevertheless, Sony just announced that it is expanding the closed PlayStation Home beta to more users in "Fall 2008." Kazuo Hirai, prez and ringmaster of Sony Computer Entertainment, said, "We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service." Come on Mr Hirai, you can say it, PlayStation Home is delayed. See, that's wasn't so hard.

another reason to buy an xbox 360
zomg0t @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:59AM
I have a 360 and not a PS3
You're still annoying
LOW RANK FOR YOU!
KangMin @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:04AM
@matt
"Wow, you're really cool"
'nuff said
KangMin @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:31AM
Great....
Now my comment above is obsolete!
NineT9 @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:25AM
I'm very happy with the PS3
If its one thing Sony does is get things right, even if it means constant delays
The only thing I care about is a perfect product in the end... So as sad as this news is, atleast I know its for the better
NineT9 @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:29AM
Also... We have some really good games to keep us busy guys... GTA4, MGS4, Haze... We'll be so distracted playing these absolute amazing games we'll not worry about Home, then itll get here, and we'll love it
The PS3 will have an amazing online community with Home
The 360 has XBLive, a truly remarkable online gaming network
We all win guys, now lets hope game developers dont tone down our 360/PS3 game graphics so they can put the game on the Wii, I love my Wii, but please keep the Wii and 360/PS3 games seperate thank you!
Bobs @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:32AM
Even though it says low ranked, i will always remember you as the lowest ranked person ever on engadget.
adrian @ Apr 22nd 2008 7:16AM
You will end up buying a PS3 in the end, That's if you don't have one already. You know it, I know it, and every other PS3 owner knows it.
fred @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:48PM
at least ps3 is getting something and xbox isn't....
Anthony @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:53AM
MGO beta delayed till friday and now this !! Bastards T_T
.. atleast COD4 map pack is comming out
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:36AM
i'd be careful not to jinx it, it might get delayyed also. Sony pisses me off. My PSN got havked and they BAN me from the forums in the same week. got my money back fromt he person who hacked my pc playstation store account, they got banned for life. Sony does do some things right but the main thing is still lacking. I've been watching and reading about home since 2004. Get with the program Sony, we don't car if its not perfect. So the grass will be choppy and other such small things. Who cares? Most of the ps3 owners out there don't! Just give it to us already.
WE ARE TIRED OF WAITING!
Dxw @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:54AM
I just want the chance to flex my e-penis. Seems like it's may still be a way off.
Ninjakamster @ Apr 22nd 2008 1:57AM
Well, time for more PS3 bashing from the guys here.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:01AM
Wow... Hypocrisy if ever there was any.
I love how people bitch and moan about "PS3 bashing" or "360 bashing" when they know they do the same damn thing.
If you guys don't like "bashing" then don't "bash" others.
Ethan @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:08AM
I'd really like to see some more dingy-type environments in this, I think they'd help more to actually get people talking, it seems like the office party right now. ANd as for the delays, we all know adding rumble is hard.
Tuck @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:13AM
So how does one try to get into the Home beta?
J-Rod @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:18AM
i think you go to http://www.homebetatrial.com/ and wait until it lets you register, i think.
J-Rod @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:19AM
i worded that wrong, keep checking until it lets u register.
smk @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:15AM
I don't know why they didn't just put an SL client on there, it would have saved them the pain of building a sim (well, they technically could still build their own sim on SL)... but if Home is just like SL (except a few Sony exclusives, of course) then they might as well have just put SL on the PS3, right?
It's probably unique in its own way, but that's my opinion.
John @ Apr 22nd 2008 7:59AM
Just install linux and use the linux SL client.
gabe @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:16AM
Does anyone actually think this is a good idea?
David W. @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:34AM
I do...innovation is always good...Home is a answer to achievements on the 360...if home succeeds I'd love to see what steps Microsoft takes to answer...
FTY @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:09AM
All that Home brings could be done with 2D menus. Question asked; Do I really want to spent 15 minutes walking a simulated world to see the latest trailer for a game, or would I prefer one click on a menu to enjoy it? I think I'll pick the later option.
Same goes for displaying my achievements, rather list them in one menu as put them on display in a 3D world, where I need to walk around a house to see all.
Just doesn't make much sense to me. But maybe I'm a minority.
Ysleiro @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:10AM
I don't, I think its a waste of time.
Its going to be one of those things you use once in a blue moon.
I like the features being added but the Sims aspect of if it is just freaking lame.
As a mature (23) gamer I don't have time to be wasting, decorating some wall or room inside a wannabe Sims. I'm in school and working part time. I have time for my games, period. Give me access to all the features and cut this sims crap.
If they would have focused on just the features they would have been done by now.
Ghen @ Apr 23rd 2008 9:53AM
I love the idea of home and the examples they've given for game integration have been very nice. As for walking 15 minutes to get to a trailer? thats just silly. You'd have a TV in your home that would show stuff like that, and maybe a teleporter pad reminiscent of star trek to visit others homes and check out what they did with the place.
Alex @ Apr 24th 2008 5:53PM
I used to think it was. hen I realised it was just a glorified version of The Sims using up vital space on your hard drive.
I don't get the arguments over the 360's 'lack of space'. I've had my 360 since about a month after it came out and only ever got it down to 9GB left. That was because I downloaded demos and couldn't figure out where they were saved so I couldn't delete them. I'm back up to 11.7GB free now.
The Engadgeter @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:17AM
Booo!
No PlayTV for US and now this? Wasn't PSHome originally supposed to come out in fall '07? Weak sauce Sony.... Weak sauce...
Mark @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:27AM
SHAME.
lao.soup @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:29AM
Who cares, how about a SL clone on the 360... the console that people actually use.
hiko36 @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:34AM
At first I was sad and now I'm just disappointed... why keep telling us any news if its all to the same tune... Delays=Fail
ray @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:53AM
more than 85% of the people here are 360 fanboys -- in other words, PS3 haters.
this theory also applies to 360 articles.
DonatoM3 @ Apr 22nd 2008 11:22AM
I own both systems and an dissapointed as well and will jump in with the bashing. The 360 has only had updates to make things that were already there run smoother. The PS3 comes out a year later and needs updates to get things functional such as the PS store finally being browsable.
Ysleiro @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:23AM
My dude you are on an "Appleish" loving site. MS is the company that consitantly gets bashed the most.
The fact is that Sony developers have been wasting time implementing some "Sims" crap when they could have just gave us the features. If they would have focused on just the features they would have been done by now.
P.S.You aren't going to get positive reactions from a negative report. (you might get a few but not many)
Zeus.:God @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:17AM
Uh, no. In 360 topics, comments consist mostly of PS3 fantards trying to "bash" RRoD with stupid comments, and in PS3 topics, comments consist mostly of 360 fantards making fun of the PS3 not having any games.
Its a two way street- don't be so ignorant.
IndiaTech @ Apr 22nd 2008 2:59AM
Fracking Developers!!! Somebody has been watching too much of Battlestar Galactica, I see.
Micanos @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:12AM
yes.
Alphajoe @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:43AM
I am so sick of people (x-box 360 fanboys) making comments about how the 360 is way better and "more people actually use it." The 360 came out earlier and was actually just a x-box 1.5. nothing really next-gen about it. Where's the HD graphics, oh wait you have to pay extra for that, and they didn't even utilize the $100 HD-DVD drive that is completely obsolete now. Why do you have to pay $100 for wireless capabilities and get a puny hard-drive? After all is said and done Sony doesn't have a 16% failure rate on there console and is actually next gen. Would you rather have a buggy HOME or a one that is near perfect on release? I can wait...
Esat Dedezade @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:22AM
I agree, you do have to pay for HD graphics if you have a 360....
In the form of a HI DEF TV!!!
How the hell can you put down fanboys when you are clearly one yourself, after calling the 360 the xbox 1.5.
adam @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:37AM
Actually the tv doesn't really do a damn thing if the output from the device is not good enough. I like the 360 but I don't agree with how microsoft markets their products. How many types of vistas can you buy? I am okay with having a cheap x-box or ps3 but why should you have to buy the wireless adapter or sacrifice having wired controllers? they are cheaper but not next-gen. it all adds up more to what the ps3 40gb costs when you think about it, right? 1.5 means that they only got it half right, and I think they had released it in tandem with the ps3 and spent more time developing it, it probably would have been better graphics. NOT A FANBOY just devil's advocate so no hate
Esat Dedezade @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:04AM
1.) I agree with you regarding the wireless adaptor, it really should be built in.
2.) I still don't understand this talk about the output from the device not being good enough. It can run 1080p even from composite and the newer models have HDMI adaptors. Are you telling me that you can tell the difference between 1080p composite and 1080p HDMI, and if you can, is it such a horrendous difference that it warrants not buying the console for people?
3.) I don't get the wired controller comment that you made. You have a choice to buy it wired (cheaper) or wireless (more expensive). Whats wrong with that? It's choice. I for one am pissed at how much Nintendo are ripping consumers off with their wiimote/nunchuck prices, but thats another story.
4.) Had they released it in tandem with the PS3, Microsoft would have not been in the position they are in now, even with an improved product. Sony's brand perception and imaging in the minds of the AVERAGE consumer (i.e non-engadget readers) was phenomenal, and the 360 would not have performed as well without the 1 year head start.
5.) Just want to finish on my own point; Had the 360 included a HD DVD drive, then the format wars would have been totally different, and ther would have been a very good chance of blu ray failing, due to a years head start by the 360. However this would have mean delaying the 360; refer to point 4.
tuaamin13 @ Apr 22nd 2008 7:26AM
No, it's not that it can't output 1080p, it's just that it's upscaled 720p and 1080i/p. Very few 360 games actually run native at those resolutions, and if you're a total fanboy/stare too long at the Gametrailer videos, you'll see that the 360 is worse.
---I think that's what he's saying.
Esat Dedezade @ Apr 22nd 2008 7:50AM
I'm not going to lie and say what I'm about to say is correct, because my knowledge of this isn't 100% BUT:
I swear 360 games run natively at 720p/1080i. I'm so SURE they do. I mean.. they do.
If I'm wrong (which I really don't think I am without trying to sound arrogant), can someone who 100% knows state here?
Zeus.:God @ Apr 22nd 2008 10:10AM
I don't think there are any Xbox 360 or PS3 games that are native at 1080p- they're all upscaled from lower resolutions.
However, the 360 does have 1080p support and has for a long time now (before the PS3 launched), just no native 1080p, as with the PS3.
Motoken @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:41PM
there are several games that run natively at 1080p on the PS3, so far 26 titles are available at native 1080p, not upscaled.
Ordeith @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:53PM
How is it that Sony manages to misinform so many followers?
The 360 has consistently had better graphics than the PS3 in multiplatform titles, especially titles that have a simultaneous release.
The 360 has a few games that render at 1080p, on multiplats, they are the same games that render at 1080p on the PS3.
The 360 has scaler hardware that allows the 360 output to match your TVs output no matter what the game resolution is. The PS3 has no such hardware and many PS3 owners have complaints of degraded imaged quality because of it.
As for wireless. Any $30 wireless bridge can be used with the 360's ethernet port. that $100 arguement is fail.
Bran @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:51AM
The big thing I'm waiting for on PS3 is LittleBigPlanet. Any fellow PSjunkies got any news on our little scroller game? Supposedly it's coming out in May.
J-Rod @ Apr 22nd 2008 8:47AM
from what i hear its not coming out until september 2nd, it got pushed back too. but it's going to be amazing when it comes out.
Schfelzerberg @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:13AM
LOL. He revised the article and changed the picture.
Matthew @ Apr 22nd 2008 4:56AM
god damn this pisses me of! how many damn times are they going to delay Home? If Sony doesn't know when it's coming out why do't they just say that instead of keep delaying it every 6 months. I'm losing lots o hope in Home.
Semi @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:24AM
do they not realise that they make customers angry when they keep annoucing delays on the same product time after time?
does announcing the fact its coming (whenever) balance out the fact its delayed? i'm sure sony is getting some kinda of marketting advice on this matter,
some marketting ploy has made sony make promises which it keeps breaking in order to maintain the pull of the crowd, where does this balance break? who decides what to announce to the people?
they know from day one that PS Home wont be released till 2009, but they keep announcing so people will purchase PS3 in a hope for these functions, then they maintain their 6 month delays routine to further their false commitments and ensure more people by the ps3 on that false commitment.
this is road is nothing new for sony... if only the competition was up to scratch :-|
