PlayStation Home beta adding more users this Fall -- in other words, delayed

After hitting delays already, we can't say that this was the PlayStation Home press release we've been expecting. Nevertheless, Sony just announced that it is expanding the closed PlayStation Home beta to more users in "Fall 2008." Kazuo Hirai, prez and ringmaster of Sony Computer Entertainment, said, "We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service." Come on Mr Hirai, you can say it, PlayStation Home is delayed. See, that's wasn't so hard.

I own a ps3 and it kinda sux but Home seems like a 2nd life ripoff anyway.
How can you be ripped-off with something free? You don't really know what you want do you?
@ayle
Read his post again. He said Home seems like a rip off of 2nd Life. Not a rip off to the consumer.
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwhat?
First I was addicted to the sims, then I was addicted to the sims 2, now I'm addicted to SL... the longer they delay this, the better.
Though it seems like an SL clone minus the ability for user created content... so, I guess that would be a Sims 2 Online game.
Kazuo Hirai, YOU SUCK!!!!
The PS3 will let you play one real game with the great Six Axis feature. How much are those new rumble pack controllers?(most games have only gimmick features)
ROD fix free - new rumble controllers (60-80 dollars?)
PS3 Home will let you do every thing that X BOX live does but with Sims. This story was about a BETA delay, BETA. How long will we now have to wait for the FULL VERSION?
What are we putting on those big Hard Drives Sony put in the PS3?
CG I demos that they claimed to be actual game play.(Is that game even coming out - what was it called?)
The cell processor will be 9 times better then the 360's.(The PS3 is like a Super Car with cheap tires. The have a big engine but no way of transferring that power into true performance.)
Wireless? most gamers are going to hardwire there system to the internet.
Blue Ray is what killed(stalled) the PS3. From the start of the PSONE, Sony looked at games as a niche market. It took off and carried not only the company but the industry into the future. Sony's game division for a time was the only Sony division that was making a true profit. Fast forward to the future Sony saw in opportunity to advance a new media format (Blue Ray). They planned on advancing this format on the back of their successful game division. How many different media formats has Sony pushed and seen fail? (MD, UMD, Memory Stick)
When Sony speaks it just sounds like lies and spin to me. It feels as they are just treading water to keep thier Blue Ray out front in center. Blue Ray is Sony's main goal, not games. The PS2's DVD feature was an extra to a great gaming system, while Blue Ray is the PS3's main feature on a not so great gaming system.
How many more years are we going to have to hear how great the SONY PS3 is going to be?
Thats all Sony has said since PS3 came out.
We WILL have this, we WILL have that. Screw WILL. What do you have now ?
Sony's constantly making noise about great features they are implementing in firmware updates, yet most features they have added have been on the competition's system from day ONE !. And they still haven't added, good messaging and music playing (while playing a game).
As far as features go Xbox has delivered on usable features. Sony is yet to do so.
The PS3 will let you play one real game with the great Six Axis feature. How much are those new rumble pack controllers?(most games have only gimmick features)
ROD fix free - new rumble controllers (60-80 dollars?)
----How do you compare fixing a broken console to buying a new controller? How much are Xbox360 controllers? Better yet, how long does an Xbox360 last before it breaks?
What are we putting on those big Hard Drives Sony put in the PS3?
CG I demos that they claimed to be actual game play.(Is that game even coming out - what was it called?)
----The hardrives allow for music, movies, pictures, games, and game cache to help games load much faster and seamlessly. I guess you are talking about Killzone 2 which was shown in playable form at the last E3. Every media person that saw it says that it lives up to the CGI video that you speak of.
The cell processor will be 9 times better then the 360's.(The PS3 is like a Super Car with cheap tires. The have a big engine but no way of transferring that power into true performance.)
----Any hard data to back that up?
Wireless? most gamers are going to hardwire there system to the internet.
----Almost everyone I know with a PS3 uses wireless. Most people don't have their internet connection in their family room right next to their TV.
Blue Ray is what killed(stalled) the PS3. From the start of the PSONE, Sony looked at games as a niche market. It took off and carried not only the company but the industry into the future. They planned on advancing this format on the back of their successful game division. How many different media formats has Sony pushed and seen fail? (MD, UMD, Memory Stick)
----That is all speculation and opinion. It's Blu-ray, not Blue Ray. Since the demise of HD-DVD, PS3 sales have sky rocketed because of Blu-ray and the new games that are coming out for PS3. Memory stick isn't a failed format. It sales great because of its use in Sony cameras and PSPs.
----If games aren't Sony's main goal, then why is the number of personel in Sony Computer Entertainment (game developers for Sony) greater then the number for Nintendo and Microsoft combined? Why is it that when they advertise the PS3 they mention all the games first and only briefly say what else you can do with it?
How many more years are we going to have to hear how great the SONY PS3 is going to be?
----How many years will your Xbox360 stay working after the extended warrenty has expired?
knowitall, thats a pretty worthless argument...
The PS3 is not all that powerful and not what Sony claims it to be. The Cell is a gimick. You can see it struggling in games already, especially with it's single core.
Give up, you're not fooling anyone.
Knowitall I agree with SOME of your points, but not all. Below are some of my disagreements with what you are saying.
1.) The RROD problem is much lower in all new 360 consoles. That dead horse was beaten long ago, decomposed by flies and is now forming future fossil fuel. Please stop using it.
2.) Seamless load times on the PS3? Sure, if you look a Devil May Cry, Ps3 users had to download a 20 minute patch to achieve load times a few seconds quicker than the 360 (where no patch was required)
3.) Cell processor: Comparing both consoles, the 360 actually comes out on top in some aspects. Sure the cell architecture is powerfull, but also far more COMPLICATED. There are many many developers who have complained about how much harder the PS3 is to develop games for than the 360.
The reason GTA 4 was delayed was due to the fact that the PS3 version was not yet finished whilst the 360 one was. Sony are VERY lucky that Rockstar waited for a dual launch. Can you imagine if they did not?
4.) Your telling me Sony don't spin things? Here are two of their best examples of 'not spinning things:
(i) Ken Kutaragi: 'Rumble is a last gen feature'
(ii) The Playstation 2 games will have TOY STORY GRAPHICS
As to your closing comments about how long a 360 console will last for, please refer to point 1.)
Thinking before posting (Assuming you are not a fanboy in which case there will be no difference made) is always a good skill to have.
Grow up.
One day you will, Zeus, one day you will...
To all the people that bitch about delays:
This is why you buy an item based on what IS available and not what WILL BE available.
If any given product does not CURRENTLY offer enough to make its purchase worth your while.....WAIT!
If it does.....you have nothing to bitch about.
If the product doesn't currently offer enough to you and you buy it anyway.....bitch at yourself and save us all the annoyance.
AMEN!
Hallelujah !
Unfortunately Sony started out by selling and advertising units based on what would be available, not what was available at launch or would be soon after.
Most of their original sales pitch was based around products that still haven't appeared. Remember Africa?
If everyone had waited for everything that was promised at launch events and trade shows, Sony would have sold about 20 units.
Or the market would adjust and console makers would be forced to offer more at launch.
The fact remains. If you buy a product that does not currently offer you what you want, you have no one to blame but yourself.
This is why I don't own a PS3 or iPhone.....................yet.
So does that mean you won't be buying a PS3 until Fall 2009 when Home is released?
Or are you waiting for in game XMB?
I'll be waiting for the one thing that interests me.
FF13. Then and only then will I consider purchasing a PS3. To be fair, I don't have an Xbox either. I'm almost exclusively an MMO player.
That's pretty moot though. My advice was pretty generic and wasn't aimed exclusively at the console market.
For example. I own an iPod Touch. I spent my money on the product I wanted and am pleased with it. Therefore, I am in no way upset by the prospect of having to pay an extra charge for the upcoming new firmware. What I have now was enough to warrent my purchase.
someone needs to board up the windows and declare this home condemned.
Let's get to work on those interactive holograms they used in Minority Report, for the PS3. It will take less time.
Come on sony wtf stop pissing of your fan base we are just waiting you
too release home don't even give dates if their not true..
First off, to address you gay ass flamers who get on blogs about PS3s - Growup and stop being a hater. You bought what you wanted, right? Not everyone wants to be like ur little dorky ass and make the same decisions you've made. Stop sucking so much penis, ok, you fruit baskets?
Ok, now, ahem - I am a little upset with this delay. This is possibly the longest delay I've seen (don't quote me, don't remember all delays to ever happen to any thing). I usually applaud a delay when it's up to a year because I understand that it's best to try to improve on something if you feel it's not up to snuff but now, this is getting crazy, YET, I will ride with Sony on this.
Such an ambitious project is probably very buggy and the fact that Sony has been ambitious with the PS3 from the beginning is why I chose a PS3 over a 360. Microsoft was shortsighted, in my eyes, even rushing those crappy systems that red ring on folks left and right. My boy's boy has had SEVERAL systems, already. That is terrible, Limited Minded Microsoft, but I digress. That's a whole nuva story.
I will give u another pass, Sony, cuz I see ur vision and support it.
They should of called it the Sony Dreamcast. Because all Sony keeps giving us is hopes and dreams. Yea if Sony keeps on getting these types of passes will be buying the XBOX 3 and the Wii x2 soon. Maybe Sony will just dump the system and shoot for the PS4 now that they won the big format war. I'm sure they could make it backwards compatible.
This is not good for sony a lot of people are going to be pissed about this
because sony gives dates and then keeps on delaying the service unlike
xbl and their marketplace it released on date.Sony please get it together
you have an amazing system but poor management and execution of
services except for blu ray win.
This really sucks but I have to admit I'm not surprised. I love my PS3 but I have gotten used to Sony's promises taking way longer to be realized. Home has a lot of potential but it needs to be good right from launch or critics will tear it apart. Hopefully they will get it right.

Maybe it has been said before but the title is wrong. Nowhere in the SCEE official state does it say that there will be more users added to the closed beta in the fall. It say..
it will expand the Closed Beta testing for PLAYSTATION®Home in Summer 2008, inviting a further number of registrants from the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) users. Following completion of the Expanded Closed Beta test, the PLAYSTATION Home Open Beta service will commence in Fall 2008.
In other words first there will be more users added during the summer (hopefully) and and after closed beta has been finished with the expanded userbase open beta will start. The title just adds more confusion
It was suppose to be out already. Then Sony said spring 2008. Not beta versions, Full Version. The last hope after a spring release was Fall 2008. Now all we can hope for is more beta testing. Someone has to stop these release date lies. It should be illegal for a company to knowingly give false release dates. Sony has been doing this for the last 4 years and everyone keeps giving them a pass. At this point, shouldn’t Sony’s marketing strategy fall under false advertising?
Ok...I could really care less about the delay. If they get it right...who am I to complain? Now if it sucks...there will be much complaining. However; a lot of people above and on the previous page are trying desperately to cling to what little hope this console is showing. I bought one(yea I made that mistake). I only feel it was a mistake because of the games available. How long has this system been out? We're only seeing ports from the 360. Where's the selection of games that the previous PS's have had?
We all know the 360 has faulty hardware...that's been out for awhile. Having said that...I bought one at launch and it just ate dirt last week. Go to UPS ask them how many PS3's they receive weekly...it's nearly as high as the 360's. I don't know why it's not getting as much attention as the 360 did... O.o..that's right...the 360 was the first/only next gen system available when they were having the majority of their problems. I would rather own a system that could crash(and be replaced/fixed for free) than own a system that had nothing worth playing. However...I own them both and I'm very disapointed in the attention that the PS3 has not been getting.
Been waiting on this for years now? Feels like hype right now to me.
