Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 available for download
Don't act like you didn't have April 24th circled in your day planner -- heck, you probably stayed up all night hoping Hardy Heron 8.04 would be launched as the 24th dawned in Australia. Regardless of your level of fanaticism towards the OS, the latest flavor of Ubuntu is finally ready for mass consumption. You know what's waiting for your torrent manager right down there, so why on Earth are you still reading rather than downloading? Get!

Site's down...
I've been firing up each version of ubuntu since version 5.10. Each time I'm impressed with the new features and polish the OS gives its users. I always stop using it after a few weeks because of some stupid incompatibility, such as one time (long ago) Java's applet viewer didn't work. Plus I always miss photoshop terribly. I know GIMP is good, i just can't bring myself to learn it! :D
You should be able to get up to CS2 up and running using WINE at this point, if that's your major drawback.
I'm waiting eagerly for that time when Linux is big enough to draw major attention from software companies. It would be nice to be able to purchase software designed to run natively. Ubuntu is probably helping in this department, since it provides a major face to work with. Yesterday I tried the Amazon music download program for the first time, and it worked really nicely. It's good to see major companies starting to support Linux. In return I'll support them.
Yeah, about photoshop, like Eddie said it runs under WINE. A couple releases ago the WINE devs went all out and concentrated their efforts on getting CS2 running perfectly. Personally I prefer the GIMP after getting used to it, but if you're really used to photoshop and don't want to change you can still run it.
Awesome Im lovin it
SPAM!!!
when i installed ubuntu 7 on my lenovo x61, it was problematic. for some reason i couldnt update any softwares or install any. apparently i wasnt the only one either. maybe this version works better...

Ready for mass consumption?
Will I be able to play a DVD with full menu support without too much hassle?
I've been using Ubuntu for a few years and have been using it exclusively for the past year. I bought my kids Dell laptops with Ubuntu pre-installed and DVD playback has been the main thorn in my side.
Just add VLC. It handles DVDs fantastically. Been using it exclusively in linux (fedora) and windows (xp and vista) for about a year now. The only wonky bit is that you have to go "File -> Open Disc" to start a dvd.
I don't like Ubuntu. It's too orange.
I don't like your head, it's too empty.
This is not like Windows, you can change all colors, and I mean every last one of them depending on how much work you'd like to spend. If it's too orange then you didn't spend the five minutes it takes to load a different theme.
Here is my desktoy theme, too orange for you?

@meist3r: Is that Monkey Island? Niice.
@snowglyder:
Yes of course it is =) What did you think? A three headed monkey? If you don't know it yet try ScummVM an open source interpreter for old adventure games (Monkey Island, Simon the Sorcerer, Full Throttle, Sam & Max, Indiana Jones, Loom, Inherit the Earth and lots more. You'll have to find your own copy somewhere in your basement to get the game files but the nostalgia is worth it. There are some free games like Flight of the Amazon Queen, Beneath a Steel Sky (great game) and Lure of the Temptress. ScummVM runs on maaany platforms (Linux, Mac, Windows, PSP, PS2, iPhone, Symbian and some other mobiles). The list of compatible games is long and I've spend hours playing these old classics again. It's free, try it. A copy of monkey Island is not too hard to come by.
And again they have put out a great version. I updated this morning and everything except a few proprietary packages works perfectly. For a free OS this is really an amazing package.
Reminds me of a Trainspotting quote:
"Who needs friends if you got heron" :p
I have several laptops. They all have "Broadcom" Wireless. In the past I've always had to tweak Ubuntu to get them to work, using the command line. Hapilly, on 8.04, all but one work immediately. For the one that didn't work, I just had to get the updates with an ethernet cable, and it automatically detected the wireless issue, prompted me to install a restricted driver, and it worked. No terminal command tweaking, no problem at all.
Well done. I tried to clean re-install XP on one of them and had to download driver after driver manually.
I think Ubuntu has finally got things right for tech hacks like me with Hardy Heron!
1.downloading it now,
2.getting its cds from canonical
3.paying for it when i get some moolah
am on 7.10 now ..
but dont know what should i be getting centOS 5.1 or this..
heck i will get both
Hardy Heron installed on VMWARE... I win!
Is everything working well, including the network bridge? Thanks.
The first time I tried to install Linux, it asked me for my monitor's vertical and horizontal synch rates. I ran back into the arms of Windows, terrified. Perhaps I should try again.
The nice thing about linux distros like Ubuntu or Fedora (my personal favourite) is that they are updated and improved so regularly (typically every 6 months) that they get better fast. When I started using Red Hat 7, it was a major effort to install, and nothing really worked when all was said and done. Now I spit and swear whenever I have to go through the relative burden of installing WinXP. Mind you, a bit of that is experience, but a big part of the reason that people think WinXP is simple is because of experience and familiarity, not because of good OS design.
100MB left 8-)
Anxiously awaiting Ubuntu 9: Irate Ibis
I used Ubuntu for about 10 months or so, and ran the HH alphas/beta for the last few, but I just switched to Gentoo to try out a source-based distribution for a while.
I'm not saying Ubuntu is bad - I think it's great under a lot of conditions. I just thought I'd try something different.
By all means, please enjoy this latest release.
hmmm this might be a silly question, but have a link to that desktop wallpaper in the picture?
Did anyone read this?
"The latest Ubuntu release brings the best of open source together on a platform that is here to stay with 3 years of free updates."
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/804features/
What do they mean by that? After 3 years they'll be thinking of charging a fee? I thought it will be free for all eternity?!
What it means is that Updates will be released for that version for 3 years, if you get a newer version, no problem. It's for the sake of the programmers.

Stupid Ubuntu gives me a "You entered an empty password" error when it tries to start up, and you cant get passed this message. Oh well, back to Windows I go.
Test
I love this operating system, the only thing i don't like about 8.04 is it comes with firefox beta as a default which is not safe (its beta anything can happen), i still prefer the old version.
Thnaks,

Just updated from 7.10 on my T60. They are taking HUGE strides with each release. I've only been using Ubuntu (and Linux) for a year or so, starting with 6.04. Back then, it was a major pain to get it running, let alone drivers and wireless, etc. 7.10 saw great integration of drivers, but took a performance hit. First impression of 8.04, perfect install (albeit a tad slow), no problems booting, everything detected, restricted drivers installed without effort, and MUCH snapper in general. Color me impressed.
I still don't know how "main stream" it is. To everything perfect may still need some command-line tweaking, especially for laptops. BUT, for any power users out there, linux is the way to get. A whole new world opened up with the BASH shell. I've probably saved 12 hours of tedious typing for work.
But it obviously doesn't catch typos :(
i especially wanted it to be released as the 24th dawned in australia.
because i live in australia.
lol
no but seriously i do. and it sucks that australia has to deal wih all that flase advertising. lawl
Waiting for update to kubuntu. And any major bugs the will show up soon.
cool!
will be installing this since one of my desktops got hacked cause of my moms stupid email with windows xp so i will be upgrading to ubuntu again
If you love the fatty one, choose Unbuntu.
If you don't, go for Debian.
I was using 7.10 (and loved it. i used 7.04 before that and it was ok) and just used the update tool. unfortunately, everything is slower and i seam to have a broken menu (Apps, System, ect..). hoping it will fix itself with a reboot. if not, i'll do a clean install.
hey, i have a question. I have an old toshiba Toshiba Satellite 1005-S157 Laptop [specs linked here: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Satellite-1005-S157-1-06-GHz-Celeron/dp/B00005Y0JI ] that i am looking to upgrade with linux, and one of my buddies said to use unbuntu. so i tried to install the previous version and it didnt work. any ideas what i was doing wrong or if this new version will work any better with it?
