Furukawa Electric shows off third-generation PS3 heatsink
Remember when you discovered that you could check out your Xbox 360's heatsink without voiding the warranty? Yeah, fun times. Now, we're getting a closer look at the third-generation PlayStation 3 heatsink -- and this time, you won't be required to perform any strange feats of inverted photography in order to take a peek. Furukawa Electric recently showed off the next-gen sink at Techno-Frontier 2008 in Japan, and aside from ditching the copper pipes used in the first two iterations, this one has also split in two in order to cool the Cell and RSX processors separately. Additionally, the latest version sucks down up to 70 fewer watts than the first-gen model, yet manages to still keep your precious console from spontaneously melting. Three cheers for progress, we say.

Yeah, I actually saw a PS3 overheat yesterday at Walmart. I don't know if it was because it was in the glass case, but that thing definitely crapped out for some reason.
What do you expect when this stuff is made in China?
Years ago, when things were made in Taiwan or Japan - rather than Shenzhen - I trusted them.
Now, the failure rates on our electronics have gone up over 30%.
LOL and they wanna bring Chinese made cars here?
I wish our congress would grow spines and put a stop to this bullshit.
@ Flashpoint. It's called the Brutish system of slave trade, er I mean Free trade. Not until the people start to riot over food, energy, and the cost of shelter will this system be put to question. Fuk Nixon, Shultz, Rohatyn and fuk the Brutish Empire.
So does this mean new model numbers for the PS3 again? Should I expect new HDD sizes? I also assume this isn't going to be in the MGS4 bundle.
Its all just part of reducing manufacturing costs. They probably won't release a whole new model just for this, but rather just start including it in PS3's made after a certain date. That to me is the most likely scenario. On the other hand, it could have been designed for a future PS3slim
It will be incorporated into all PS3s that come down the line as soon as it's ready (if it's isn't already). The PS3slim is a long way off yet. This heatsink only saves marginal space and weighs about 400 grams less...whoopdy crap. It saves power and keeps it cooler that's what matters.
Personally, I could care less about a PS3slim anyway, it's not like I carry it around with me. Now a 3-disc Blu-ray changer...that's something I'd pony up for.
More than likely it will be migrated into all existing consoles.
@Nate:
I would buy a "slim"/redesign with 45nm processor, with the same size as the original, if it had a changer. That's mad!
I say stay with revision #2. I can't tell but it looks like the third version doesn't have a fan. It sure would make the PS3 even more quiet.
The 45nm cell must not need a lot of cooling. My 90nm beast sure gets hot. I'm glad it has a heatsink with more engineering than all of what went into the 360.
Than all of what went into the 360? Maybe you don't understand- the Cell is great, but I can guarantee you a LOT more engineering when into the 360's GPU than the Cell, its just not as publicized because the same type of GPU was being designed for PC release in the near future (in relation to the launch of the 360).
The cooling system in the PS3 is a bit out of whack, and the size of the CPU in the PS3 doesn't have much to do with it, considering that a single core of any CPU isn't going to produce as much heat as 3. The heat sink in the PS3 is all over the place and hardly efficient. If you put it in the 360, the 360 would be worse off than what it has now- that is how bad it is.
When I get a PS3 next month, I want to get the 60gb model (1st generation) because it has all the features like 4 USB ports and memory card readers and the PS2 hardware for best PS2 backwards compatibility.
Too bad its the most power-hungry, consumes 200 watts compared to 160 for the 40gb (without PS2 hardware).
Anyone know if these new upcoming models will have software BC like the 80gb or none like the 40gb?
BC > ALL
um taking away heatpipes is bad... glad I have a 60gb
If you dont need them, they save on the cost and weight of the machine. Plus fewer parts means fewer things that can go wring.
Yeah, heat pipes aren't needed because there isn't really anything to cool- then again, with heatpipes, even if they were sticking all over the place, when not needed, couldn't cause any problems in terms of cooling.
Ummm...it's not the heat-sink that consumes 70 fewer Watts.
The newer consoles, with the 65nm Cell, etc. consume (and put out) 70 W less than the original version...so of course the newer heat sink can keep it cool.
If the heatsink/fan were consuming even 70 Watts in the first place...well, that'd be just plain ridiculous.
i haven't encountered any ps3 overheating problems and neither have my friends.....but this will be a great improvement for the future of ps3 when devs are going to be able to use 90% of the ps3 power.
