NVIDIA's been on a hyper-competitive tear lately, and while the latest rumor isn't quite on par with Roy Taylor saying
that the Intel CPU is "dead," it reinforces the company's new win-at-all-costs attitude. Seems ATI's upcoming RV770-based Radeon HD 4800 might threaten NVIDIA's dominance of the high-end graphics market, and that's just not acceptable -- so the company is planning on pushing up the release of the GeForce 9900 to July. That's one billion transistors and GDDR3 memory, if you haven't been memorizing rumored graphic card specs -- we're guessing that
blue screen of death will render mighty fast on that rig.

AGP?
Bryant @ Apr 25th 2008 10:06PM
That's a shot of the old 5800 ultra... you know, the card with a makeshift leafblower turbine?
JohnTitor @ Apr 26th 2008 12:28AM
anyone got a link to that video?
Puneet @ Apr 26th 2008 3:40AM
i seriously doubt its AGP PeoriaHawk :)
If you're still on agp (like me) and want the best in AGP look for either 7950GT by nvidia or HD 3850 by ati. 3850 best for agp & get em fast cuz they're getting rare.
gabe @ Apr 25th 2008 9:26PM
i guess a nerd would be getting a boner now
Ignatius @ Apr 25th 2008 9:33PM
.... crap.

Saying people are nerds on a gadget site is like calling the kettle black...
El Taco @ Apr 25th 2008 9:55PM
did you just call me a nerd?
It was spontaneous, okay?
Neebs @ Apr 25th 2008 10:02PM
sorry
nerdtalker @ Apr 25th 2008 10:45PM
Because all nerds are basement-dwelling males who "fap" to the latest hardware, of course we are. I feel a stirring in my... OH SHI-
Pfft...
Any other old-ass stereotypes you feel you'd like to share?
mark @ Apr 26th 2008 11:50AM
I'd pee in your coke on principle.
coolbee8 @ Apr 25th 2008 9:28PM
Don't you just love the benefits of competitions?
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Apr 26th 2008 12:56AM
I am cheering for the loosing team (ATi) to win, but all my sports betting money will be on nvidia. I sure hope ATI's next generation HD4800 is a bonafide home run.
H4MM3R @ Apr 25th 2008 9:30PM
BAD ASS!!!!
Fernando @ Apr 25th 2008 9:51PM
whoop-ass'd
Jacob @ Apr 25th 2008 9:37PM
If I'm not mistaken that is an ATI Radeon 9900 in the photo.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 25th 2008 9:55PM
It is. Thats why it has an AGP connection and 4 pin molex power connector... Also, Nvidia would never go with that disgusting transparent cover.
Bryant @ Apr 25th 2008 10:06PM
It's not. It's an nVidia GeForce FX 5800 ultra.

iofthestorm @ Apr 25th 2008 10:14PM
There's no such thing as a Radeon 9900, the 9 series ended with the 9800XT. N00b.
Terc @ Apr 26th 2008 3:13AM
"Nvidia would never go with that disgusting transparent cover."
That was fking great.
Please, sir, may I have another?
Puneet @ Apr 26th 2008 3:42AM
no its the 5800 ultra
google v9900 ultra and you'll get old Asus 5800u's there.
i dont't believe nvidia has released any pic's of the 9900
Zeus.:God @ Apr 26th 2008 3:20PM
Well it is still true that Nvidia wouldn't go with that disgusting transparent cover- obviously done by Asus.
So what, I was wrong about it being ATi. Big whoop- fact of the matter is its not a 9900GTX which was the point of this whole thing.
Juaquin @ Apr 25th 2008 9:38PM
Looks like a lot of solid-state caps and a less mammoth heatsink. Wonder if this is a good sign or simply a pre-production testing unit.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 25th 2008 9:56PM
Its not an Nvidia card, much less a 9900GTX. Think early 2000's.
Peter @ Apr 25th 2008 9:39PM
I believe that actual is a nvidia 5900
Phil @ Apr 25th 2008 9:43PM
Errrr its an AGP Nvidia FX 5900 thats pictured. Notice the molex power instead of PCIE :P
Eh @ Apr 25th 2008 9:48PM
Its desperately needed after the disapointing performance the 9800 had with Crysis. Can none of these cards handle DX10?
Fox318 @ Apr 25th 2008 10:16PM
No.
Cody @ Apr 25th 2008 10:34PM
1. I agree. I really want to see a card, no matter how pricey, come out and blow Crysis away.
2. Love your avatar.
gaforces @ Apr 25th 2008 9:57PM
Whatever NV comes up with, I reckon it will BSOD a lot faster once Intel is done with their compatibility fixes :)
I do not want to have to use ATI on my Intel platform ...
ethana2 @ Apr 25th 2008 11:06PM
I wonder what color we'll use for kernel panics after we complete the switch to kernel based mode setting....
Blue is unlikely..
Not that any end user will ever see it, of course.
Chris @ Apr 25th 2008 11:37PM
I just want to play crysis completely maxed out on a 24in monitor with a single(non GX2) GPU.
cydonia @ Apr 26th 2008 12:25AM
does anyone remember how huge everyone thought 5800Ultra used to be, with its external molex power connector and its oh-so-insane double slot cooler?
Fruition @ Apr 26th 2008 2:48AM
I less-than-three NVIDIA.

"I just want to play crysis completely maxed out on a 24in monitor with a single(non GX2) GPU - Agreed! But I want to do it with Crysis running in DX10 on my Windows 2008 workstation!
Kirt @ Apr 26th 2008 3:29AM
its a 5800ultra, i still have my reference one from nvidia, the big green one haha, works like a champ
Boe @ Apr 26th 2008 3:48AM
Try not to get too riled up if you are an expert (as I am not so I'm asking a question) on nvidia's GPU line up but isnt the 9900 just a slight one up from the 9800? Aren't the real next gen ones coming out with a name like g100 or gt200 or something in December?
Ted @ Apr 26th 2008 5:59AM
I'm no expert either, but my understanding is that in theory the 9900 wouldn't be a big leap but nvidia has botched their numbering system with the 9800 cards, which are practically identical to most of the 8800 cards. 9800 GTX = 8800gts/gtx and < 8800ultra at high res + AA
9800 GX2 = two 8800 gts in sli
So the expectation is that the 9900 will actually have a performance boost. They're just being weird and the 9900 should be the 9800 and the 9800 should be the 8900.
Soon after the 9900 we should see the 'real' next gen graphics from nvidia though, in the form of the codenames you mentioned.
Oh well :P
Trixie @ Apr 26th 2008 11:49PM
Oh man, the BSOD would be sooo cool on a 9900 Ultra card. I mean, it is so awesome to look at on the 8800, I can't even imagine how wonderful the blue reproduction will be on the 9900. This is true open source when NVIDIA and Microsoft work together to render the ultimate Blue Screen of Death.
Wwhat @ Apr 27th 2008 10:53AM
I bet they will release the G200 with vista-(sp1)-only drivers.
