Apple looking to Immersion for haptic technology on iPhone?
Immersion, the same folks responsible for adding haptic technology (force feedback from touch panels, pretty much) in a fleet of Nokia handsets, could be looking to do the same with Cupertino's one and only. While VibeTonz isn't specifically mentioned by name, a recent report (which should certainly be filed as a rumor for the time being) is suggesting that bigwigs from both outfits are in ongoing meetings "over licensing and implementation issues of iPhone haptics." Interestingly enough, this news is flowing hot on the heels of Immersion appointing Clent Richardson as president and CEO; if that name rings a bell, he previously spent five years pretty high up the ladder at Apple. Of course, all the signs pointing to yes doesn't mean anything in and of itself, so we'll just twiddle our thumbs a bit longer and hope to have some feedback for 'em soon enough.[Thanks, Chris]

why are half your comments about screen resolutions?
just chill, there isnt a noticeable difference to the general public.
to people like me and you, we can notice. but the othe 90% of the world doesnt care. people like apple that try to turn a profit arent going to spend the money to please the 10% of us that care.
My understanding of Immersion is that their primary assets are a bunch of overly broad patents, not technology.
All i want is 3G, GPS & a LED backlit Screen for better battery life, this haptic technology is kind of annoying to me hopefully they will be a option to disable it. I already have a 10 mp Camera & the screen resolution for a device of this size looks good to me.
The display on the iPhone is already LED backlit.
Immersion sucks. They're just patent trolls.
I think you guys mean "haptic feedback" since "haptic" just means relating to the sense of touch and the iPhone already has a haptic system - a touch screen.
Balls. Haptic feedback is not a vibration that tells me i've pressed some button somewhere on my phone. That is a crap feature available on almost every crap phone all over the crapping place.
There's nothing to talk about until the touchscreen develops herpes-like movable lumps, maybe some sort of electrically active polymer surface that deforms based on the static charges either side of it... but transparent... so, when there's buttons on the screen to be pressed, you can feel them there without pressing them.
Touchscreen phones suck for one simple reason, they're completely useless if you can't press buttons without looking at the phone. I could navigate almost any feature of my N95, w850i, and countless older phones with my eyes closed. I had a viewty for 2 weeks and absolutely hated it because it has no buttons. Until they can replicate BUTTONS, and the response to pressing them, they can keep their touchscreen phones and half-ass "haptic" feedback
I was talking to Immersion people about this last night during a game of Scattergories
Maybe e)) should change the title of the post to..
'Apple might make iPhone 2 vibrate when you touch a button on the screen'
Would have saved me time reading the article..
