Screen Grabs: Lost's Ben shoots Nikon
Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Ben (aka Benjamin Linus), leader of the Others and all around creepy manipulator, doesn't just shoot guns all the time -- as we find out in a flashforward to 2005, he also apparently shoots Nikon as well. Now, there's certainly nothing wrong with a D100, but Ben does kind of strike us as the calculating, discerning type that would probably prefer a full-frame Canon though, you know?

They have been using the Nikon D200 on NCIS for awhile now.
Some people might give you guys crap, but I appreciated this post Engadget. Obviously a nerdy observation someone was proud of, which we all can relate to. :-)
Same here...I did notice that it kind of looked like a Nikon at a glance, but didn't really focus on it.
Wow Engadget, really skillful how you en passant bashed Nikon and that way made complete fools of yourself.
Are you seriously believing Canon is better than Nikon? Well I guess it fits your other camera expertise as witnessed by your typical blurry product photos.
I subtly read (btwn the lines) "now let the fight begin" after the canon comment. I'm sure its just a tease.
Man, looking through the old Screen Grabs installments:
The Richies, the new Knight Rider, Criminal Minds, The Daily Show... and now Lost...
I feel bad for whatever poor intern you guys have tasked with watching such horrible television for these articles.
That episode of Lost was actually good. The backdoor knight rider pilot...well...was extremely bad...*shudder*. NBC really needs to put additional finances in hiring some decent writers....Law and Order's episode last week was pretty sad plot wise...
Ha, as soon as I saw the camera I was trying to figure out which one it was. As a proud Nikonian, I was pleased. I do have to say that Ben should have been shooting an F5/F100 in '95; there were no good digitals back then.
I meant to say '05
Well if Ben is stalking someone, you would of with a 1,5x crop instead of a full frame?
And yes, Nikon does seemed to have catched up with Canon with the D3.
I'm thinking that because he is using the camera with a telephoto lens, he probably wanted the extra reach with the crop factor.
IMO.
Nice way to spoil it for people who haven’t watched yet.
yes, because this picture of Ben + Camera is a huge spoiler, which makes everyone not want to watch Lost ever again.
The plots ruined, we know the end, its a LOST cause of a tv show :D
If you thought the episode's sequence in 2005 was a flash forward, you didn't understand the episode.
I am happy with my Sony ericsson 5mp camera phone :)
If I were the prop guy I woulda covered over the second "0" and made all the fanboys tweak out -- make 'em think it was a new model.
D300 owns this... big time.
NIKON FANBOY RIGHT HERE!
Canon? Pfft.. I'll take a Nikon over a similarly featured Canon any day!
Canon!! Preposterous!
No, Ben would use a Nikon full frame camera because Nikon makes one too.
Why the hell would someone want a full-frame sensor to zoom in for a close-up when the Nikon's DX sensor provides a 1.5x effective zoom? (e.g. 200mm effectively becomes 300mm) Now if Ben were taking wide-angle shots to show the effects of war on Iraqi village...
You'd think with their budget, they could afford a freaking full frame D3! On the island, there's lots of dark places, and the D3 eats Canon's lunch in high ISO performance. (I shoot with a 1Ds Mark II - full frame Canon DSLR).
Like most of you, I was trying to figure out what camera that Ben was using in the episode. The interesting thing is that you can see D100 clearly but you can't see Nikon logo. Maybe Nikon didn't pay the promotion fee. :)
D100 - Released on 07/15/2002
D200 - Released on: 12/15/2005
So perhaps this scene occurred before 12/15/2005.
I find it odd that he was using a 3 year old camera. I don't see what the big deal is about the 1.5 multiplier as most Cannon cameras are 1.6x. The real problem is if you are like me and like wide angle pictures you have to get an 18mm lens. Unless you are spending $2000+ you don't relay get a full 35mm sized image sensor. My olympus e500 is 2x.
