Planex DigiJuke NAS snags YouTube and BitTorrent video -- jams it down the Wii, Xbox 360, iPod... and throat of MPAA
Here it is copyright bandits, the single biggest reason (besides silicone) to make a Hollywood studio notice you: the MZK-NAS02SG1T network attached storage device from Planex. The main selling point behind the ¥54,799 (about $524) 1TB Gigabit Ethernet block is the claim to "universal access" for all your devices. That little trick comes courtesy of its DigiJuke browser for searching and tagging the BitTorrent and YouTube content you want downloaded in the appropriate PSP and iPod (MPEG-4), Wii (FLV), or TV (MPEG-2) format for in-home or on-the-go viewing. The NAS also streams audio and video to your iTunes laptops or desktops, DLNA TV, Xbox 360, or other compliant device in the home. A front-facing USB 2.0 jack offers one-touch dubbing of USB sticks while a second around back offers ready storage expansion. It ships with a pair of 3.5-inch 500GB drive which you can swap out for higher capacity spinners at a later date. That is if the studios don't shut you down first.[Via Impress]

Fuck.
Yeah.

And one more record executive's child can't afford that sixth year at Harvard....
Bob @ Apr 28th 2008 4:14AM
If I weren't paying for his kid to attend Harvard maybe I'd be able to afford my year at normal, suck-ass community college.

MZK-NAS02SG1T
Why do model numbers seem to get longer and longer as time progresses?
Chris @ Apr 28th 2008 4:36AM
Because if they called it the 'Model A' it would have to come in any colour you wanted... as long as it was black.
XenoX101 @ Apr 28th 2008 4:51AM
Well 2 hex digits gives you 255 numbers, surely that would suffice, if not, maybe bump it up to 4, but come on, 13 digit model numbers, there are serial numbers shorter then that.
Anyway, the device is pretty awesome, I'm just being picky :P
phrogg @ Apr 28th 2008 5:45AM
Model numbers aren't really meant for everyday use, more like for internal identification. Things should have a NAME, i think, for us joes to recognize it by.
Most of the time, the model means something to the company. Even though you may see it as random numbers, someone employed by Planex may be able to read it pretty easily, such as:
MZK (probably a prefix referring to the type of device. If it's abbreviated from japanese, i don't know much of it, so i couldn't say.)
NAS (Network-Attached Storage)
02 (probably the version, since there's also an MZK-NAS01SG.)
SG (This may reference a feature, maybe to the SATA and the Gigabit Eth port, but once again, if it refers to something japanese, no idea.)
1T (storage capacity).
phrogg @ Apr 28th 2008 5:46AM
That was supposed to be a reply to Chris. >_
phrogg @ Apr 28th 2008 5:47AM
Actually, it was supposed to be to XenoX101.
WHO GAVE ME DECAF?!
A.C.E.R. @ Apr 28th 2008 5:59AM
Does caffeine make your essays on model numbers more compelling than usual?
stef @ Apr 28th 2008 5:59AM
Any idea of a release date in Europe ?
Raheem @ Apr 28th 2008 6:53AM
January 13th, 2024.

Great, its a Tivo for web pron.....

OK, We've seen so may of these NAS/Torrent integrated AV jukeboxes, How about a device that does Usenet? Sign me up if someone develops one. I'm currently using Hellanzb on a Ubuntu bux with Samba enabled.
It would be a dream come true if they could add HDMI, and Usenet to this box.
Robert in Texas @ Apr 28th 2008 4:12PM
Need I remind you that the first rule of Usenet is that nobody ever talks about Usenet. You don't want to wake up with a horsehead in your bed...
yuppicide @ Apr 28th 2008 12:45PM
I kind of want this, but I'm thinking maybe not. The quality of a YouTube downloaded video on a large screen TV is going to be crap.
Hybridchild @ Apr 28th 2008 3:25PM
Funny thing is in Japan that would be quite attractive, their copyright laws ban uploading but allow the downloading of copyrighted content for "personal use".
So as long as people over there who bought this didn't share the files with anyone else they're legally safe.
Needless to say the Japanese entertainment industry is looking to change that law ;)
joey @ Apr 28th 2008 4:21AM
Actually it isn't illegal to download copyrighted content in the US either, but it IS illegal to upload, burn, or re-engineer it. So pretty much it's the same here as Japan.
A.C.E.R. @ Apr 28th 2008 5:31AM
Thanks Hybridchild and joey for those thrilling tales of copyright law and intrigue. Next week: The DMCA and Jane, a love story.
Tim Brown @ Apr 28th 2008 11:43AM
Now if they could only add add PeerGuardian 2 to it, then i would be interested.
EddyC @ Apr 28th 2008 4:03PM
Where the heck can we buy this thing? Their website is pretty foreign and doesn't offer any info about buying it in the USA. Plus I can't figure out if this is mac compatible...
snowglyder @ Apr 28th 2008 4:54PM
That's because it's illegal in the US!!
Your IP address of 192.168.1.1 has been reported to the MPAA.
Seriously though, I want one.
Randy @ Apr 29th 2008 1:32PM
Definitely Want! I'm unsure as to how this ties to the Wii though, Can someone enlighten me please?
theox @ May 9th 2008 4:14AM
I recently bought the MZK-NAS01SG and I'm not impressed... Although the spec is great, it's software isn't up to expectations:
1. DLNA support is problematic. On my PS3, ALL DivX files are listed as "unsupported data". MP3 playback suffers from interruptions.
2. The bittorrent client works, but the UI is extremely basic and not refreshed correctly.
3. There is no mention of the 2nd gigabit port in the documentation. I tried connecting it to my giga switch and everything hanged...
I hope these issues will be solved in future firmware updates.
