Acer's 18.4-inch Aspire 8920G laptop gets reviewed
First things first: just in case that headline didn't really sink in, this is an 18.4-inch laptop. In other words, those of you with even the slightest of back problems should probably just pass this one right on by. If you're still with us, however, you'll likely be totally engrossed by Laptop Mag's review of the Acer Aspire 8920G. The larger of the two second-gen Gemstones was said to feature a "gorgeous" Full HD display, impressive audio output, a respectable webcam and plenty of power under the hood. They also found the unique CineDash Media Console to be quite effective, save for accidentally activating the multimedia hub on occasion. Overall, critics deemed the lappie a "stellar" machine, but we'd certainly recommend browsing through the review just to make sure you're really interested in picking up a slab this gigantic.

Remove Vista, then we can talk...
Stop trolling.
Then you can talk.
Running Vista on 3 computers. Absolutely no problems with any. Grow up.
Vista removed. Now what?
Pochi,
Hey, I know you like being a douche and all, but disliking Vista is not trolling.
@Dolemite
Bringing up your hate for the primary OS shipped with basically every single laptop on Earth outside of the Mac family is definitely trolling.
Douche.
You see, some of us are quite content with XP. Vista may have its advantages, but for some, it does not offer anything special that they can not already get from XP. Not everyone who is unhappy with Vista is an Apple troll.
BTW, I like how you signed your comment with your sig. I like it when douchebags come to accept their status.
"You see, some of us are quite content with XP. Vista may have its advantages, but for some, it does not offer anything special that they can not already get from XP."
The release of a new laptop isn't the place to piss about it. That's all there is to it.
And while we're at it, your inability to adapt to a new OS that is barely that different from the one before it is sad.
Hey, no offense douchebag, but nobody here needs your permission for anything. If you don't like it, you are free to go fuk yourself.
Best wishes, you douche.
But this laptop should have enough power to run it considering it seems to have higher specs. If it doesn't, then I'd agree.
@Dolemite
You used "douche" 2 times.
And misspelled the F bomb.
=)
Wow, this looks like quite the machine considering it's an Acer, although I probably would've preferred a full(er)-size keyboard instead of the media controls, but that's just me.
I'd really love to see some head-to-head benchmarks between this and the HP 20.1" laptop.
I second that! I would love to see comparisons between this and the HDX. I still prefer the look and feel of my HDX to the Acer.
It only looks good because of the wallpaper. If it were a pic of a cat, the cat would be the main attraction, not the laptop.
Read link? OK, not that I really care. I find my 14.1" Dell to be heavy enough for college.
Time to hit the gym!
I will NEVER buy an Acer anything again. My laptop worked three months was sent back they did not fix it all so still not turning on and basically I spent 900 for a paperweight!
What exactly is the market for a notebook computer this big? (Note: I refuse to call it a laptop because you'd crush you femur putting this thing on your lap)
Didn't the term "Laptop" come first? And then "Notebook" came along to describe the new form that was smaller then the laptop?
I'd call it "Transportable"
Yeah ladderless it goes something like this as far as size:
Earth > Deep Thought > Desktop > Transportable > Laptop > Notebook > Ultraportable > UMPC > PDA.
By my reckoning anyway.
Here's an alternative...
Buy a desktop w/ a free 19" LCD...strap them to yourself...save $1000...and you're mobile!
Don't forget those batteries!!! Just insert and (woah hey there!).
What desktop comes with a free 19" display with a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution?
I want. And I'm embarrassed about it :(
Yeah, you'd be a complete tool with this thing... until of course you are stuck on the runway and they run out of peanuts and everyone is chewing each others heads off and you are watching a movie is blissful 18 inch 1080p :-D
You'd be lucky if you got through the opening credits before the battery died.
Many planes nowadays have plugs for laptops
Thanks Phoenix.
Insightful.
I try my best
Good luck fitting that laptop on a seat in an airplane
I already find my 15 incher troublesome to lug around and my friend's XPS 1710 a back-breaker. The only place I have for that is a table inside my house.
Nice machine.
lol at the connotation of large screen laptops causing back problems, it Sounds funny. I've never realised that it contributes to it.
Although everyone secretly wants one, I'm not gonna say everyone buys one. However, there quite a few people that do. Like myself, I bought the HDX. Yes it's large and heavy and not really a 'laptop' but I love the large screen real-estate, the great specs and the sheer awesomeness of it. I travel about 4 times a year and havent had a problem transporting it on my shoulder at all. True not ideal for everyday Uni but if you're after gaming and entertainement on large HD screen that can still be portable when required, such as taking over to mates, these type of laptops are perfect and are getting more and more popular. There definately is a market for larger desktop-replacement laptops and I hope it continues as I am a big fan of them!..
That control to the left of the keyboard is reminiscent of a kind that was used a lot on Star Trek in the mid 90's.
That picture posted with the article looks like the screen lid is too short. It looks like if you close the lid, it wouldn't cover the whole base as the mousepad + buttons would still be showing.
My Aunt is the type to buy this cause she is the type to buy a laptop to use as a desktop and never travel with it
Looks decent but really isnt portable.....
Any idea of price?
*update* Seems the GPU is just a rebranded 8700m GT :(
Damn Nvidia and their renaming of 8 series stuff to 9 series stuff overnight....
Personally, I prefer a larger laptop with a full keyboard and usable screen real estate.
I have no problem lugging it around.
I LOL at the executive-wannabee types in the airport lounges trying to type away at their I'm-the-most-important-because-I-have-the-smallest laptops.
Those are pointless to me. Minuscule resolution and an even smaller keyboard. What can I say, I have big hands.
WOW i didn't know some many of my fellow geeks where in fact pussies
if a 15.4 inch note books to much for u i think u mite wanna hit the gym
but yeah 18 inch is more of a desk replacement its not something your going to take to work with u like my mac book pro and my custom asus both 17 inch i don't travel with them they just get moved around the house for the most part and it nice to able to take out side and do work but i am not on plane with it
i would think that where this fall into place
Speak English.
u no u want 2 lern gud talking.
meh, just the digg crew stopping over.
that is huge, i can see people complaining about back problem already
Meh, another EEE rip off
LOL
Is it just me, or is there some major barrel distortion going on in that photo?
Remedy: zoom in about halfway, or even fully if you want to, step back, take shot. Do NOT photo this stuff with the camera fully zoomed out, you'll get barrel distortion.
Of course, I could be wrong and the laptop is just oddly proportioned...
Yeah there is distortion. I also don't understand the curved bottom.
I'm waiting on the dual flip out 24" displays... Seriously though, how freakin' large are "laptops" going to get? I think pretty soon it's going to herald the return of the suitcase computers like the Osborne/Kaypro...
