ASUS gets really official with 17-inch G70 gaming laptop
During the hurricane that was CES, ASUS managed to get in a word just long enough to make mention of a forthcoming G70 laptop. Now that the storm has passed, it's dishing out a full list of details to get gamers' mouths watering. The 17-inch behemoth features quite the vivid motif, and crammed within you'll find your choice of an Intel Core 2 Duo / Core 2 Extreme processor, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, twin 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GTs, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM and room for dual hard drives, too. Furthermore, you can feast your retinas on a WUXGA / WXGA+ panel and tickle your fancy with an optional Blu-ray writer, 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, gigabit Ethernet and 8-cell battery. Sure, this beast weighs nearly 10.6 pounds and packs more LED lighting than an LCD Soundsystem concert, but hey, you've got to flaunt it if you've got it, right?

i love it! dual everything lol... So hows the battery life? I never heard of an 8700... but it's definitely the first i have ever seen in a laptop... especially with 2 gpu's! I like everything, but if i were a hardcore gamer, i would just build a computer
Maurik @ May 2nd 2008 2:53PM
Dual 8700m's are way inferior to even one 8800m.
Stay away from this machine tbh.

Agreed with Maurik, get the gateway with the 8800gts

It's unfortunate that we must explicitly state sarcasm, even in, at least what I would consider, such an obvious case...
Backwards People @ May 2nd 2008 2:57PM
Your static is not appreciated. It's just white noise.
konshuss @ May 2nd 2008 1:51PM
if the mac airheads make fun of its size, your legs will be too numb to chase them.
danny @ May 2nd 2008 2:59PM
Mac airheads aren't going to make fun of it. Where do you even get that from? It's a total different class of laptop. Are Lenovo X300 owners going to make fun, too? Since they have an ultra-thin also. No, they aren't. They're all gonna ask WTF is wrong with you.
And no one cares if you posted first, by the way.
konshuss @ May 2nd 2008 5:55PM
for the simple fact that apple fans
konshuss @ May 2nd 2008 5:57PM
dammit, reply got cutoff. just consider the comment nothing more than a flippant dig at form over function-lovers and let's leave it at that.
Vic20 @ May 2nd 2008 1:51PM
What I would have given for one of these in the early days of Ziggurat Vertigo...
Flashpoint @ May 2nd 2008 2:06PM
Show me this laptop playing CRYSIS.
Then I'll commit to buying.
Ytril @ May 2nd 2008 2:11PM
ASUS colored the back exhaust port red, not to emphasize the hair-dryer heat that will be blasting out of this thing when gaming.
You can dry your wet pants, gaming while you are wearing them.
orpheus @ May 2nd 2008 2:49PM
The laptop is so amazing that you'll piss your pants, then it will dry them for you.
Richard Lai @ May 3rd 2008 11:11PM
This reminds me of the South Park WoW episode where Cartman had to shit on his seat while playing the game.
Mark @ May 2nd 2008 2:19PM
flaunt it?
what kind of idiot wants all of that LED garbage on their computer? Just give me something minimal ... no need to light up the room.
phanbouy @ May 2nd 2008 2:22PM
alright! another laptop! hot shit!
AlphaTeam @ May 2nd 2008 2:26PM
Good to see Asus putting out a competitive gaming laptop. Not that I would buy this behemoth, but it's a great thing nonetheless.
Ted @ May 2nd 2008 2:28PM
If a company gets around to making a gaming laptop that actually looks sexy and sleek, not overly flashy, maybe I'll consider getting one again.
I bought an XPS a while ago, thought it looked alright at the time in internet photos, but pretty soon I was embarassed to use it in public because it looked so over the top.
saraalito @ May 2nd 2008 2:38PM
This looks awesome!!! I built my gaming PC (I used this book, it was extremely helpful: http://www.booksonboard.com/index.php?BODY=viewbook&BOOK=174863&v=synopsis), but it's a desktop, a huge clunky thing. This laptop does look really sleek (I think). Any word about the price?
coolbee8 @ May 2nd 2008 2:39PM
Stuff 8800m in already, even if just one.
Backwards People @ May 2nd 2008 2:56PM
Optional Blu-Ray... haha.
I think most people will pass on that particular option.
Once BRD-writers come down in price, I'll jump on the bandwagon.
Chris Thompson @ May 2nd 2008 3:04PM
woo lets throw some numbers at it, good 'ole meaningless model numbers
Sam @ May 2nd 2008 4:40PM
Look at that exhaust, that thing probably works better than my space heater.
Steelerguynd @ May 2nd 2008 5:36PM
yeah those 8700m suck big time. i have a dell 1730 that had 2 ofthem. replaced with the 8800m gtx's and holy crap! fast for a lappy!!!!
Cassini @ May 2nd 2008 6:23PM
I'd rather buy Alienware's m17x.
stan @ May 2nd 2008 8:32PM
Does it come with a free bag, maybe it will take some weight off of buyer remorse..
FXi @ May 2nd 2008 8:39PM
This is a shot right over the Dell 1730 and Alienware M17x bows. Things the Asus has that the others do not:
8ms screen
dual lamp screen (tired of stupid dim laptop screens I am!)
Normal, fast and "turbo" clockspeeds from the company that brought overclocking too the masses
Decent sound (Maybe it's like the Xonar DX and does EAX 5?)
Dual screens, main and aux data (though the 1730 has something similar)
The only thing that might have been better would be a high brightness LED backlit screen, but the above will do!
WraithEye @ May 3rd 2008 4:58AM
What? You say that is a gaming laptop? IT is not able to beat a m15x, so fight againt a m17x or better a d901, you 'll see if it is usefull
Do not buy it, its too expansive for it values
tekdroid @ May 3rd 2008 5:11AM
here, sir, we have our Tacky 3000....
Ry @ May 4th 2008 10:37PM
but can it run Vista?
i kid, i kid...
throw in a HDMI port and i'm sold.
