MSI's GX600X TurboBook gets inspected, reviewed
Surely you remember that G600 that MSI showcased at CeBIT, right? We know you're sitting in stunned silence just thinking back, so we'll move forward anyway. The crew over at TweakTown managed to get ahold of the GX600X TurboBook, and rather than just frolicking in fields of flowers with it, they put this puppy to the test. Unlike the vast majority of MSI lappies, this particular one manages to stand out somewhat, with a relatively loud design and a fairly potent set of components to boot. Reviewers found it to be a "peak performer" with "excellent overclocking capabilities," and while the logos may catch a few eyes, these critics felt that those very decals may deter folks from buying an otherwise solid machine. Nevertheless, head on down to the full review -- you may find yourself surprisingly attracted to an MSI. Imagine that.

You would have to be one of those people that wears the huge, long button up shirts from Hot Topic with anime characters and/or flames on them to appreciate this laptop's design.
GOD AWFUL.

It looks like the battery has overheated already!
Homeboy @ May 2nd 2008 10:53AM
TurboBook, is that what's you're called?? Is there a turbo button on the back??
Ray @ May 2nd 2008 11:06AM
There’s indeed a Turbo button. The CPU and Graphics Card will automatically overclock 20% if you press it.

Is this news? From back in December: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/msi-gx600-core-2/4505-3121_7-32727074.html [Different CPU but same laptop].
warlockza @ May 4th 2008 5:04AM
Yeah its news,..I'm tired of rhetoric from manufacturers, and I'm glad someone put the turbo button to the test.

I own an xbox 360 and the above image offends my eyes.
KillerSiafu @ May 2nd 2008 11:36AM
The flames make it go faster!
Kamokazi @ May 2nd 2008 1:07PM
What's your reasoning behind that?
Khaeos @ May 2nd 2008 11:41AM
i wanted to buy this laptop last year...but it wasnt available then so i had to get the GX700 instead :)
not complaining though, MSI laptops are pretty good :)

So much hate. If I were in the market for a laptop, I'd look at this just for it's design. Black and flames are awesome. :O
Kamokazi @ May 2nd 2008 1:10PM
I agree, I think it looks pretty slick. But there are a lot of fans of brushed aluminum around here if you know what I mean....
Also not sure why there is such negativity on the MSI brand...they make great motherboards, I put them up there with Asus, Giga-byte and Abit. Asus until recently was not regarded highly for it's notebooks despite the fact that they were nice machines.
Steelerguynd @ May 2nd 2008 1:34PM
I agree, Flames rock! I would rather wear a shirt with flames on it then a pink striped shirt any day.
Jerry @ May 2nd 2008 1:44PM
Why is this old news being featured on Engadget? This is the same thing that NotebookReview.com reviewed last year:

Is it a slow news day?

Croud?
What the shit is happening to America...?

Come on! Optimus Prime has flames! But this doesn't change it's shape more than opening the lid. My vote is: No way!
pilot101 @ May 2nd 2008 6:21PM
Umm i dunt get this isn't really much of an improvement over last year's model GX600, almost exact same parts but updated cpu -_-. I mean, you could've gotten a same model months before at places like rkcomputers minus the flaming stripes and the msi button on the center of the lid.
Schfelzerberg @ May 3rd 2008 6:38AM
What? It still looks the same as the old GX600 Extreme, unless this is actually the old GX600 Extreme released just now there. And I don't dig the tribal red decals. My friend has the non-Extreme edition that doesn't have the flame decals, it honestly looks much better.
Andrew @ May 4th 2008 6:51PM
I have seen the EXACT SAME laptop from ABS and CyberPowerPC, the case has to be a reference design or something.
I own that exact laptop, cost me $1200. AMD Turion TL-60/ATI HD 2600.
Actually mine has an MSI Mobo in it, maybe its an MSI thing...
VBVAGUY @ May 5th 2008 7:49PM
I have this laptop and it is actually a very nice laptop. Very solid in design. The tribal design is NOT a cheap sticker, but looks to be painted on and then clear coated to protect it. I tried oveclocking it to the max like the review did all on the highest settings and also even overclocked my GPU to 675Mhz and 475Mhz for the memory using Riva Runer and ran 3DMark06 several times and the GPU temperature only got to a high of about 85 degrees centigrade which is below the threshold.
