Sony dumping off old SIXAXIS controllers in MGS4 "Welcome Box" PS3 bundles
Now that the Dual Shock 3 is finally here, it looks like Sony's finding creative way to dump off old SIXAXIS stock -- like tossing 'em in MGS4 PS3 bundles. Japanese PS3 buyers will be able to choose from three "Welcome Box" MGS4 bundles in Satin Silver, Ceramic White, and Clear Black, and in addition to Snake's latest adventure and a Dual Shock 3, they'll find a SIXAXIS inside. The bundles will cost ¥49,800 ($470), compared to ¥51,800 ($492) for the gunmetal gray bundle that doesn't include the extra controller, so basically Sony's giving Japanese buyers $20 to take a SIXAXIS home. That's quite a deal, but honestly, we'd rather drop the Jackson on that super-hot gunmetal unit than have another (obsolete) controller lying around.

It just sweetens the deal of someone who wanted a PS3. if only it were BC :(
Chris Anderson @ May 3rd 2008 1:20AM
awwww man....i just a PS3 two days ago! I paid an extra 50 bucks for the DualShock 3!! what a rip....
BobTurbo @ May 3rd 2008 1:42AM
It is AD, get over it.
Mike @ May 3rd 2008 2:02AM
Everyone in Japan that wants to play PS2 games has their PS2.
The PS3 MGS bundle coming to America IS BC as it's the 80GB model.

Patriks7 @ May 3rd 2008 3:25AM
what i wanna know is
can the new controler also do what the old one did? the SIXAXIS thing or w/e its called :x
Nohone @ May 3rd 2008 4:36AM
@Mike:
"If you look at our competitors, one machine has zero backwards compatibility and one only has it with a third of their games but our product will always be 100% backwards compatible."
- Jack Tretton
This was the mantra reported by the Sony fans when the 360 was released, that theirs would play all PS2 games and the 360 only emulated XBOX 1 games. Now you need a secret decoder ring to find out if the PS3 will play PS2 games correctly. The 20GB/60GB does, the 80GB partially, the 40GB not at all. There are rumors of a 100/120GB, and nobody is sure of compatibility. Now the argument is "if you want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2, it is cheap."
I have a 60GB, and the only games I have for it is Q-Bert and the free GT download from PSN, other than those games I use it only for Blu-Ray. At least I know I will have BC, if I ever decide to play a PS2 game.
... And I am still waiting for that promised 2nd HDMI port.
Jake @ May 3rd 2008 5:00AM
You have had over a year to buy a PS3 with BC, are you an idiot?
Nohone @ May 3rd 2008 5:25AM
@Jake:
What an arrogant, ignorant, pathetic little person you are. Yes, those "idiots" did not go out and get a second job like the Sony guy (forget his name) told them to do so that they could afford a launch PS3. Why wait until the price dropped from that initial price tag of $599? They should have stopped paying rent, eating, dropped out of school, etc. so they could have given their hard earned money to Sony. I was lucky enough to have a job (now retires at age 39) where I could have afforded a 60GB, but not everybody could have afforded it. They have families to support, but apparently they are idiots, and should have known that Sony would screw them over by lying (see the quote I posted) beforehand and let their children starve and buy a 60GB so they would be prepared.
Reading over your post history shows what a disgusting little "man" you are. I have many things (PS3, 360, Wii, 52" LCD, house, BMW, etc) and I am very greatful for them. But I am most greatful that I am not as shallow as you.
Phoenix @ May 3rd 2008 12:04PM
@Paul
How does it suck that you get a free controller. Free is free, even if it isn't the best thing you could have had.
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ May 3rd 2008 12:05PM
Nohone, you sound like an angry, bitter old little man who shouts at the world with a curled fist.
If you can't afford a shiny new PS3, then why cry about it? If you have kids to support, rent to pay, groceries to buy, then you should be saving up your cash instead of spending it on material items. Instead, you should look into saving your money, using discount coupons and playing smart with your cash so you can still be able to entertain yourself.
Predator.Z6 @ May 3rd 2008 12:47PM
I still can't get over the fact that I ended up getting the best deal around from SonyStyle last summer...60GB PS3 + an extra SIXAXIS for only $399!!!!! MUAHAHAHA!!!! (sorry, can't hold it whenever someone complains of the high prices)...
TheGeektoriousBIG @ May 3rd 2008 1:05AM
Well choke my grits and call me Suzy. Great Deal.
gabe @ May 3rd 2008 1:10AM
a great deal is when the ps3 can play backups effortlessly.
until then enjoy your $60 games
Alex @ May 3rd 2008 1:15AM
Yeah... "backups."
Ruben @ May 3rd 2008 1:18AM
@gabe:
I dont get what you mean.
When you say backup, that would mean you own the game and thus backed it up. In which case, you paid the 60 dollars anyways for the game.
If you said "backup ;)", then thats a different story entirely. In which case, get ready for a low rank.
gabe @ May 3rd 2008 1:19AM
back up :(
Deoki @ May 3rd 2008 7:34AM
I don't matter what you guys call it, but sudden choir boy attitude aside, everyone is expecting to play copies, so don't come with the crappy "everybody is a saint" BS.
Oh, and btw, the only guys that low rank are dude like you Ruben. Do you really think everybody likes to pay for a 60$ game? Since the times of Saturn its been like this! Console appears, games sold, chip developed, consoles cracked, games copied, consoles sold as hot cakes.
Oh, Engadged and Gizmodo are filled with saints, I'm sure.
Dr. Evil @ May 3rd 2008 9:06AM
Thief. Grow-up.
Ruben @ May 3rd 2008 1:29PM
1. The comment i made was to warn that people on Engadget do not like it very much when people speak of piracy. Never did i make a judgement of his/her actions of wanting to be able to play backups ;) so you can fuck right off.
2. If $60 is too much to pay for a game then wait a few months and get it at one of those clearance places. A majority of the 360 games i got cost me 20 - 40 bucks, with a number of "what the hell" 9 dollar titles. I really cant be bothered to mod my 360 and fear losing my live access or having my console banned. Its just not worth it.
3. Decent bundle. But they are pricks for limiting the gun-metal version (by far the nicest version) so they can charge a bit more due to its niceness and rarity.
don @ May 3rd 2008 1:31AM
but it says right on the box you get a DS3
Kspraydad @ May 3rd 2008 1:44AM
You get 1 DS3 and 1 SIXAXIS.
Kspraydad @ May 3rd 2008 1:43AM
Yep...that controller without rumble is obsolete and useless...it'll just lay there being a bother.
wtf?
Good deal.
Funke, Tobias Dr. @ May 3rd 2008 3:45AM

BuddyBoy @ May 3rd 2008 4:41AM
I don't have a dual shock 3 yet, but my two sixaxis contraollers are just sat there useless now. Complete obsolete no use for them. None what so ever.
Phoenix @ May 3rd 2008 7:31AM
I think kspraydad was being sarcastic...
But yeah... It's good as a cheaper multiplayer controler
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 3rd 2008 2:00AM
In actuality they're charging extra for the gunmetal grey color. It will be in high demand, so it makes sense.
Ninjakamster (PSN: Chin-Poh) @ May 3rd 2008 2:09AM
The bundle will come in Black, Silver and White at the same price.
I just got a PS3 and the Sixaxis isn't so bad, I've gotten used to the lighter weight in fact and would use it as a secondary controller for two player games once I get a Dualshock 3.
Nick @ May 3rd 2008 2:23AM
Including the MGS4 game inside the MGS4 themed PS3? What kind of crazy world do we live in where the actual game comes in the similarly themed system? This is nonsense.

I just don't get why anyone cares about rumble! I have yet to sit playing a PS3 game and think "wow, you know what would make this game better? If the controller buzzed like a pager at seemingly random intervals, triggered by some interaction that makes no real sense!"
I mean, if you had a game where the main character walked around carrying a blackberry in is hands the whole game, then I suppose 'rumble' could add an amazing sense of realism, but I have just never been sold on the idea that somehow a weak vibrator going off in my hands adds a new level of realism to my character falling off a ledge.
sinjinn @ May 3rd 2008 8:06AM
rumble is good.
Ivan_PSP @ May 3rd 2008 4:24AM
Id!ots the new Dualshock 3 controller for PLAYSTATION 3 has motion sensing technology as well as rumble amateurs...
BuddyBoy @ May 3rd 2008 4:42AM
Who said it didn't?
Phoenix @ May 3rd 2008 7:30AM
YEah... WTF? Where does it say that?
El Taco @ May 3rd 2008 10:47AM
actually it doesn't have motion sensing. It has tilt sensors. They are completely different things.
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 3rd 2008 11:52AM
El Taco:
Yes, they are different things. And the SIXAXIS/DS3 have motion sensing, not just tilt sensors. Both can detect translation (motion) on all 3 axes and tilt (rotation) on all 3 axes.
white_ultras @ May 3rd 2008 4:45AM
still, it is an overpriced import...
only some crazy head would buy these imports, now in the downfall of the economy, when at least partly domestic products are available.
Mike @ May 3rd 2008 4:59AM
Domestic like the Xbox are rubbish. Your cash is better spendon something that will last more than 6 months before catching fire and bruning your house down.
Raheem @ May 3rd 2008 6:29AM
Sorry Mike I don't believe there are any instances of an Xbox catching fire and burning down a house. If you're referring to the unfounded power brick incident, well... you try leaving your TV (or something that gets similarly hot) inbetween 2 pieces of wood and carpet for a while.
Your cash is better spent on something with games... Not a console where the best selling exclusive was a demo. Have 3 Xboxs and no RROD ever.
Lastly, Mike... I thought rumble was a last gen feature?
Funke, Tobias Dr. @ May 3rd 2008 2:19PM
There is no US domestic alternative for the same quality. The Sony controller is one of the greatest interface devices of all time, and MGS is one of the greatest game series as well.
I regret that Sony has moved a lot of production to China, but they still employ a lot of (SCE) people in Japan and California.
Also, the dollar is starting to rebound, which should ease increases in oil prices. What a difference a few weeks makes.
