GreenPix creates massive, self-sustaining LED display in China
A company called GreenPix has created an astounding combination of sustainable technology and digital media virtuosity, dubbed the Zero Energy Media Wall. The system features the world's largest (so they claim) color LED display, powered completely by photovoltaic cells which are integrated into the glass curtain. During the day, the wall -- located on the Xicui entertainment complex in Beijing -- harvests solar energy, then expends the charge at night in a display of undulating colors. The system goes on display this month, but if you can't make it to China, you can watch a video of the work in action after the break.

FREE TIBET !!!!
Flashpoints a hipster.
noone's going to boycott the games except tibetans and zealots. you're making no difference, and you're letting down legitimate athletes who have been training for years for this elite competition - you sir, are a moron. die in a fire.

FREE TIBET FROM CHINA'S BRUTAL POLICIES !
Whoa... since when did "sofa"="first post"? I always wondered that wandering through Chinese forums.
WOW. Just WOW.
What's wrong, Trinity?
Some huge-asze, rainbow colored sentinels coming in, sir.
Though it may not be the most useful thing in the world, it certainly proves that billboards and the like CAN (and hopefully will) be sustainable technologies. Think about Times Square, or Shibuya – the energy use is enormous.
If, as a race, we are committed to making our activities green(er), then we have an obligation to this kind of stuff.
sustainable? Think beyond the energy to run this thing, to the energy needed to manufacture, install and eventually dispose of it. Think of the background computing needed to operate it, and the creation of more visual pollution.
ScooterDe, everything is 'green' nowadays! Computers are 'green' all of a sudden if we bling the externals with a bit of basic wood paneling and tell them it's using less watts than the predecessor. Oh yes! No guilt computing at last!
This sign is green because batteries and screen are made out of left-overs from hemp production, naturally. No toxic materials in manufacture at all.
And as we know solar cells assemble themselves as a by-product of photosynthesis.
Why it's a veritable self-sufficient organic system, as GreenPix's website puts it. And just look at the resolution on this monster. Tell me you've seen better. Tetris here we come.
;)
我喜欢谁。I take chinese. i dont need google translate
I studied Chinese for 2 years in Fu Dan University, Shanghai China.
你喜欢谁?为什么不告诉我们?
RE: Zhong Guo
你喜欢谁?为什么不告诉我们?
I can read your characters but I have to reinstall my typing software.
I like China but I'm not going to make the Olympics due to the controversy.
Flashpoint, please take some time to read about Tibetan history before speaking. Tibet has been a part of China since the Yuan Dynasty, which was roughly 700 years ago.
Learn from independent sources, not CNN / BBC, or Xinhua / CCTV for that matter.
@joe - Good to know the history... and that gives China the right to kick out the frickin' dalai lama?? Do you know the Dalai Lama? Well I certainly think not, not in the least. Not in a million years.
I am not saying Tibet must be independent from China. I am saying there must be a vote, people's voice must be heard, freedom of religion and freedom of speech must be respected. No one should be imprisoned or beaten up for expressing their opinion. Otherwise it's an evil dictatorship hosting these games. An evil dictatorship swimming in cash is still an evil dictatorship. Period.
@ nikster
That's very democratic of you... Too bad China is communist...
It's interesting how china considers so many countries their provinces, and seeing once genghis khan rules the whole continent I'm guessing they consider half the world also 'rebellious provinces of china'? I think the conquests included iraq and pakistan and such, and parts of europe, so yeah they could easily lay claim on everything then eh.
Meanwhile the legitimate leader of china had to flee to taiwan so it's china that's the rebellious province themselves really, ironically.
Is the building filled with resistors?
NO, it is not...
In China resistors are not allowed.
If the building was full of resistors it would be surrounded by tanks and you wouldn't be allowed to show it on the news.
It looks like China has just perfected THE 60's,
and YES, you will make a statement if you boycott. You will prove that some americans are aware of the existance of other countries. (not just as an option in the food court at the mall)
Besides, is it really important if it isn't made by apple?
So how many ohms can a resistor have before it is banned from China?
well, only if you can measure the resistance of a single guy in front of a tank... I think that could yield about aaaaaaaa..... 1 TeraOhm?
That kind of resistor is cool. :)
But, if we are going to use green technologies, we shouldn't WASTE energy on advertisement. We should use it for lighting and absolute NEED.
Imagine switching to green fuels and green energy just to waste it playing video games.
*Imagines switching to green energy
*Imagines playing videogames with it
What's wrong with it? I like it
videogames sound like a legitimate use of green energy. It keeps kids off of drugs.
Videgames. My Anti-Drug.
I'm not gonna debate the merits of art, but now this wall has no windows, and the power generated doesn't go to reducing the electric bill of the building. personally, I can do without that particular art installation. at least its not sucking energy.
I was expecting to see colours.
Me too! I am totally sure this is a fraud, because no ballerina has tits THAT big.
Ditto, the video images are all black and white.
That looks like a design mock-up video.
Too much Chinese in this thread.
pretty neat.
im okay with this as long as nobody does Pee pee in my coke
too much racism in this thread too
And with Kei's comment, too much lame oversensitive-ness.
Wonderful!! Ad's are here to stay and they shouldn't be using energy. This is the way to go.
I see this being a norm and govt mandatory for all ad in the near future.
And yeah, FREE TIBET !!
if you want to free tibet, im going to say, free hawaii, alaska, puerto rico, and basically north and south america.
@ peter
and last but not least, free icecream
what about "free Iraq"?
I agree that Tibet should have the right to secession if they want, (or Tibetans to have equal rights as the rest of China if they want to stay) but the US is currently doing much worse things in much more places, and seeing as that's our government, maybe we should start by ending those occupations first.
China has a pretty messed up government, but the "greatest purveyor of violence in the world" is still the US, by far. Lets keep that in perspective when criticizing others, and also keep that in mind next time the US offers to "help" other people, in Tibet, the Middle East, or elsewhere.
Sorry if this borders on being a political rant, but (a) everyone else brought it up, and (b) the facts speak for themselves, I'm just pointing them out.
free my willy
brokenkeyboard has a good point. Ever since we took over Hawaii, we've been on an unstoppable rampage of meddling in other countries' business.
Like right now, we just finished bombing some Somalians. Guess how we justified it? Yep, same story that always works, have the CIA say they're "possibly" linked to Al Queda(sp?). According to the CIA, everyone AND THEIR MOTHER is "possibly" linked to Al Queda.
In any other circumstances, I would totally be Pro-Tibet and all-for boycotting the Olympics, but being an American, I am not in a position to say anything against China.
@andres
Free beer?
@brokenkeyboard,
As far as I know, Tibetans enjoy MORE rights than ordinary Chinese. For example, they don't have to abide by the one-child policy and their children are awarded higher scores on college entrance exams.
They should make it a real time visualizer based off the sounds that are going on around it.
Now there's a cool idea!
"located on the Xicui entertainment complex in Beijing"
There is a hotel in the complex (judging from those shiny characters). So it kinda makes sense to have such a posh exterior..
but it doesnt make sense to have chinese calligraphy type of font on the righthand side showing a name of a restaurant --- totally destroy the good work of this green LED display.
very good, very strong.
I can't wait for Skullphone to hack this bad boy !!
Or to pay them to display his image, for that matter...
I maybe thinking too much. I would not be happy to live across from that LED wall since it would be very annoying. It would be better if it would show an acutal tv station. That would be cool.
I noticed it's about 10 fps and only in black and white. I think I'll just stick with putting my face two feet from my TV. Still, kudos on being energy efficient. And FREE TIBET of course.
The PRC government is the most dishonest, evil government I know - next to NKorea and Iran.
They'd probably claim Falun Gong members tried to put "Free Tibet" on this display via hacking software in a couple years.
the video is so fake, if none of you noticed
also,
I would not want one in the here in the US because it would be used for ADVERTISING! The US seems to be obsessed with ADS. they are just all over the place
We have a building like this in Dallas, infact I can see it from home, it does all sorts of colors, animations and displays text. All the LED elements are between the windows so it doesn't effect the view from inside the building.
I can't decide if this trend is something that I will like going forward or is just going to be tacky and annoying.
http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture4pe9.png
I'm sure those LEDs are biodegradable, right?
@ Flashpoint: Obviously, you do not know the "friends" USA have in Africa and Middle East.
When I was in China last year, I only saw the sun one or two days of the three weeks I spent there. The rest of the time it was too polluted to see the sun. So, will this thing even work.
YUP - that's so true.
I was there over 2 years and I don't remember seeing the sun at all.
The moon was nice though !
What you could see was all the physical deformities people had due to the pollution.
Flashpoint, WHERE in China did you live?
@ Flashpoint. Agent orange in Vietnam seems much worst than the pollution. Point is America aren't angels either.
Quit the politics shit.
Call me when they put a 1280x720 LED-wall.
Call me when they put a 1280x720 LED-wall.
Is it just me, or does the video look like a concept rendering and not -actual- footage of the building "in action?"
Maybe we'll have to wait 'til the system goes on display this month to see something -really- working, and with color would be nice.
was it my imagination or was that the edgar james sharkington (the shark with the dharma logo from lost)?
Can you play Doom on it?
No sorry, only Wolfenstein 3D.
SWEET
The video is an obvious fake. The first half is several architect's renderings (see the 'trees' at the bottom) slow-dissolving into each other. The last half is a really poor quality image superimposed on some stock footage of traffic. If this "billboard" exists, this isn't a picture of it.
真棒!希望能够去北京看看!
First of all... cool stuff!
second... What the hell makes this thing to be 'sustainable'? I'm getting sick and tired everyone blindly applying the 'sustainability' label to their design in an effort to make it cooler.
OK, so its self sustaining energy wise. big deal.
Didn't they spend a lot of energy to produce this "useless" thing?
Didn't they spend a lot of energy to transport this "useless" thing?
Don't they waste perfectly good solar energy on running this useless thing? (the fact that it generates this energy itself is a non-argument imho, wasted energy == wasted energy)
Don't get me wrong, I think this thing is very cool; but people should think twice before using the word 'sustainable'.
Free Bidet!
I wont bother with the political stuff as its already been said...
But that video is FAKE! The Colour picture might be real but htat vid is fake.
The black and white image seems to of been composited over the original highway footage.
You can still see the bloom from what ever original display is put behind it.
Welcome to Beijing and have a look at that big screen if you pleased.
..how is this not larger http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RTKvuj96b7s
WOW What a USELESS DISPLAY!
FREE TIBET FROM CHINA'S BRUTAL POLICIES !
@ Lobsang. How about FREE IRAQ & AFGHANISTAN for starters?
Yes, Why not?
I oppose any form of repression.
For 50 years nobody but Richard Gere gave a damn about tibet, and now suddenly all the people are protesting? I'm not the first to say that there is a smell of manipulation of naive crowds for political reasons completely unrelated to tibet.
There's clearly a rich world of propaganda efforts going on in the (western) world, and I'd advise people to adapt their studies to get a spot in that fast growing and ever popular field.
Sure you obviously can say bad things about china, but not much you can't say about most other countries too I fear.
awsome... this is gona make chris martin shit his pants!
imagine the promotional possibilities,...movies,..music videos..and MORE!!
Not sure why people are calling this the largest color LED screen in the world... it pales in comparison to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremont_Street_Experience#Viva_Vision. 2,292 color LEDs is nothing compared to 12 million (even if you consider 4 LEDs per pixel).
