I have one for the following reasons. If you looked hard enough, they could be bought for around $300 so it was 1) cheaper than the PS3 (which I already have). 2) Looks better on my media rack. 3) I can stack my cable box on top of it. 4) I can use a universal remote.

i would like to see a poll for how many engadget readers actually own or ever plan on owning a standalone blueray player.

Yeah, I honestly do not see the value of adding a standalone BD player when you can get a PS3 for $400.
Maybe for the same people who buy the 103 inch plasma TV with diamond-studded bezel?

I only own a standalone because I got my BD-P1200 for $150 in Dec. I still would not have a blu-ray player if it wasn't for that deal.
