Humanoid learns to cook breakfast, fend for himself
Never mind getting tesla coils to fix your supper, just hit the on switch on your own personal humanoid. Reportedly, the creature you see above has been loaded with learning algorithms that enable it to repeat actions that it learns. Wonder if anyone realized that this totally demented critter just learned to slice more than ham? Stay sharp, kids -- the video's after the break.

You could have fun with this robot!
Dillon @ May 7th 2008 4:34PM
I hope you weren't implying any sexual connotations...

Teach him to cut the cheese!
phanbouy @ May 7th 2008 1:44PM
is the Benny Hill soundtrack really necessary?
Adam @ May 7th 2008 2:59PM
The Benny Hill soundtrack is ALWAYS necessary.
marty.com.au @ May 7th 2008 6:15PM
Sorry, but when you use the Benny Hill music, there is actually a law that you have girls in skimpy outfits in the theme of a nurse, a parking inspector and a secretary running around flashing their bits….
Time to call the police (dress theme as above!)
mortal @ May 7th 2008 1:48PM
hm, wonder why they use the wiimote @ 1:19.
Mile @ May 7th 2008 1:52PM
I'm not scared. I could crush him pretty easily. He's so tiny!
phanbouy @ May 7th 2008 1:53PM
that's what you think. he's made of titanium and filled with snake venom
Technex @ May 7th 2008 3:09PM
Lol, nice user picture! Yet you want to crush him :(.
Richard Lai @ May 7th 2008 4:41PM
phanbouy's probably right: if you fail to crush the robot, it will learn your action and act on your soft flesh. Bad times.
fLeShTwIsTeR @ May 7th 2008 5:02PM
That's what she said!

what's great is he can juice oranges on his head, until he short circuits anyway
Nunim @ May 7th 2008 2:01PM
Man that is one expensive looking mixer.
Anonymoose @ May 7th 2008 2:18PM
what's so special about this robot? i thought this is why we invented women and children
phanbouy @ May 7th 2008 2:23PM
yeah i mean adam totally gave up his rib for nuthin, man!
Anonymoose @ May 7th 2008 2:19PM
robots are only useful for senseless killings and crazy awesome dance-offs. and maybe hugs.
mitch @ May 7th 2008 2:43PM
FAKE.
Yeah there's a wiimote seen clearly at 1:20 of the video...and if yo uwatch the shadows throughout you can see somebody making the actions the robot follows.
Dillon @ May 7th 2008 4:33PM
O rly? You think someone is making the robot do that? NO WAI!!1
They clearly showed the guy teaching the robot what to do, and even if the Wii controller is controlling it, that just adds on to the epic amount of awesome this robot generates.
Brad @ May 7th 2008 5:08PM
So for some crazy reason, around 1:09 the Wiimote is just SITTING there, and the bot is still moving?
G Kabik @ May 7th 2008 7:09PM
Yeah, no. There aren't any shadows that weren't from the robot itself, and also the Wiimote is clearly laying lifeless on the table at 1:09, and the only time you can see it being used is when he stops his eggbeating motion and returns to what's obviously the default position, right after the disembodied hand presses one of the bottom buttons (a or b). The Wiimote was most likely reconfigured to control operations that aren't a part of the action learning demonstration. Why don't you actually bother to investigate it objectively before you call somebody a fake?
Yevon @ May 7th 2008 7:38PM
Yea, this was so obviously photoshopped. The reflections are all wrong.

Paul @ May 7th 2008 2:47PM
At first glance it looked LEGO sized.
Morgan Percy @ May 7th 2008 2:51PM
Looks like they use the wiimote to start and stop the robot's actions and you can see it doing actions while the wiimote is laying on the table.
Munkcy @ May 7th 2008 2:52PM
Humanoid learns to cook breakfast, fend for himself; is currently looking for John Connor.
blackfeather @ May 7th 2008 2:56PM
Did they mean "Chef" Cook Robot? or will this thing be the "Chief" of other knife-wielding bots?
Asha @ May 7th 2008 3:02PM
I think it is time to start building an EMP weapon.
Stiv @ May 7th 2008 3:03PM
This is not impressive. It's only "learning" in the sense that a recorded macro "learns." It's not learning from vision. It's simply recording the motion of it's servo motors and playing it back.
Technex @ May 7th 2008 3:11PM
That's what I was thinking, wonder why everyone keeps saying fake, it's not complicated.
Josh @ May 7th 2008 3:19PM
I give it a year before someone turns it into a masturbatory device :P
phanbouy @ May 7th 2008 3:31PM
does it always take you a year for your side projects?
Anonymoose @ May 7th 2008 4:19PM
psssh, no. some of his side projects take much longer. it took him at least 10 years to finish elementary school.
phanbouy @ May 7th 2008 4:25PM
good point. josh, if you would, please cease all veiled references to your prostate and stimulation thereof.
crho85 @ May 7th 2008 3:33PM
I for one welcome our "HEY! get back in the kitchen and make me a sandwich"- overlords
turban @ May 7th 2008 4:09PM
women belong in the kitchen. not robots. unless it has a vaccum...=]
Anonymoose @ May 7th 2008 4:43PM
and this is why you don't have sex. and the fact that you're ugly.
OH SNAP
*does touchdown dance*
däniel @ May 7th 2008 4:17PM
well, in the next video, the robot will actually blend! as in, use the blender for another recipe, that is
;) sorry but that had to be posted

Eh @ May 7th 2008 5:31PM
I would be more impressed if it learned how to cut the cheese
sniping_dreamer @ May 7th 2008 6:59PM
Was it just me, or is there a Wiimote in there?
G Kabik @ May 7th 2008 7:14PM
No it was just you, and not the five other people who clearly commented on it here 5 hours before you did.
Michael LaFramboise @ May 7th 2008 7:52PM
hahaha! awesome! :D
Ben @ May 8th 2008 2:11AM
Even though this is hardly a "robot" as someone said it simply memorizes it's servo motions, I still am attached to it. I think the way it moves it's head to follow its movements and then looks at you when it's done, like it's saying "was that right?" gives it a very humanly quality. I think robots become more human as we project ourselves on them, regardless of their ability to actually act/think humanly.
Sylvain Calinon @ May 8th 2008 4:37AM
The Wiimote is used to answer to the robot's questions.
Look at the long version to see how it is used:
