iPhone is good and done in the UK -- until the 3G version, anyway [updated]
The headline kind of says it all, but if you weren't already sure enough that the first gen iPhone's stint in the UK was coming to a close, O2's pushing to make things crystal clear. It's hard to imagine both companies are going to just stop selling such a high profile device for too long, but clearly we're all still in the dark as to when its 3G replacement will officially be out.
[Thanks, Keith]
Update: While European carriers are running out of stock left and right, it seems Apple Stores in the UK and elsewhere still have iPhones -- for now.
Update 2: Okay, and now O2's page is showing that the iPhone is once again available. Temporary glitch or preparatory? Beats us, but if you want a 16GB device, it's apparently still up for grabs.

@devix
You obviously haven't a clue what you are talking about.
You could walk into any O2 or Carphone Warehouse shop that had them in stock and pay them £169 for a phone.
Excellent, as for the people ^ who've said they've not seen any / many, I've hardly seen any either, a few people around the Birmingham (UK) apple store and in London but only around say 100 in the last 12 months
DiGiC, what's happened to all the phones they've now sold out of then? Do you think 02 just dumped them in a skip? I'd be interested to know the numbers of other brands of phones you've seen in your 12 months of study.
All this hype over the next gen iPhone and it's probably gonna be a piece of shit and a big let down to what everyone is hoping for. Meanwhile in Seattle Microsoft is developing their own phone with a version of Windows Mobile called "Phone4Sure", and is guaranteed to screw previous companies who have licenced Win Mobile OS.
Anyway, I'm off to trade in my iPod for a Sony Walkman, cause the 80's are back in fashion man!!!
The 80's never went out of fashion mate ;) Casette players ftw!
lol
I'm in the uk and I know 3 other people in my office with an iPhone. I don't think it's as unpopular as some people here are making out. Personally speaking, the thing cost so much I avoid flashing it around in the street!
It's funny how almost every other phone manufacturer is now coming out with some kind of 'iPhone inspired' new model with a touch-screen feature glued on at the last minute. The touch screen isn't the best thing about the phone for a start. Like it or loath it, I don't think anyone could sensibly see it as a huge flop for Apple.
I'm in the UK, have the iPhone and know four others that also have one. I also avoid flashing it around. Don't want to get mugged by some chav!
And you have the same name as me - do we know eachother?! Seems I may have a doppelganger...
anyone saying none have been sold is either a moron or not living in the UK - 80 were sold in one day in Preston
O2 has told Stuff that - despite the message on the website - the 16GB iPhones are only temporarily out of stock and will be replenished. Also plenty of stock in O2 stores. Seems an odd sign to post up on the website in that case.

To the people saying they've *never* seen someone buying/using and iPhone in the UK: I live in London and I've never seen anyone buying/using an N95 here - so that must mean N95's aren't selling at all, right?
I've never been to London so I don't think it exists
You're probably lying. If you truly live in London, like I do, you will see an N95 everywhere you turn. There are 14 year old children with N95 8GBs for goodness sake. The phone is EVERYWHERE here.
Seriously, you don't live in London, do you?
Yeah dickwad, I spend my time making false posts on the internet....

Is 3G iphone made out of plastic now, if that the case I'll stick with my EDGE iphone lol
What a load of crap. Where does engadget get their information from.
o2 is getting new stock at the end of this week
Right now O2's store says 8GB OUT OF STOCK and the 16GB is in stock.
Except its still available in the UK, at Car Warehouse, O2, AND Apple Stores. Other than that, GREAT HEADLINE.
As you can all see, o2 lied, there's plenty of stock! I feel they've done this to try to save face due to the massive flop that the iPhone was.
Apple stores? Aren't there like 2 in the whole country. Unless you are including official resellers.
O2 have 16gb back in stock on-line...
