Moshi's Zefyr MacBook cooler is way hot
If you haven't faced MacBook Air overheating issues, you're clearly in the minority, and regular ol' MacBook users have been faced with plenty burnination of their own. While there are plenty of laptop coolers out there, none have been so specifically designed to address these two perennial overheaters as Moshi's Zefyr. The aluminum heatsink setup has an "ultra-silent" USB-powered fan and is quite minimal, just concentrating on the MacBooks' problem spots up top. Even better for Air users: you won't be monopolizing your lone USB plug to work it. Zefyr is available now for $75 in silver or black.

MacBooks don't really get that hot. We should be looking at MacBook Pros. Mine has fried an egg and then some.
some bacon?
some more eggs
i have a macbook and i also had to instal smcFanControl and keep the fan running at 5000rpm just so the CPU stays below 65°C, this is probably the best thing i have seen for the macbook, i need to get one so that my CPU and legs last a little longer without combusting...
And some.. ?
I think it lost him a nut or two.
I've never experienced a MacBook Pro overheating. It actually runs cooler than my PC notebook that idles around 70 degrees C.
I think it depends on the CPU in there. The Penryn's don't get that hot.
@ clockwork
Man that's roasting!!! My Dell Inspiron 6400 never goes above 50C even under hard loads!
Whoa crazy!
Ok so let me get this straight. Some one makes a notebook cooler and sells it to Apple users and Apple users are all happy? These things are nothing new people...
Yeah, my MacBook is actually cooler than most PC laptops I've used.
I haven't worked with many apple laptops, but one I used was way too hot, the other one I used seemed to be the coolest thing I have ever touched. Coolest meaning temperature that is...
Overheating? Must be all those ports and jacks and features. Oh, wait.
And it only bumps the MBA to normal-laptop thickness! Fantastic!
And makes it not so sleek or able to fit in an envelope.
Notice that the MBA and the ordinary MB are both the same thickness after putting on the cooler! The MBA is a scam!
@kurian
I've been thinking, what if manufacturers tout a laptops thinness by taking away some parts, but in the end, you must add back all the parts externally to make the laptop run normally.
Wow the macbook air gets hot? I didn't know that. I guess while they were gutting everything else they decided to get rid of the fan also :p.
Those coolers look kinda cool though.
Yea almost as cool as the 360's external fan.
This is one cool product...
Im here all week.
are u gonna like the annoying in-laws or can u actually leave earlier?
Am I going to like the annoying in-laws? What the hell?
ya, I read it several times...no idea what it means...
I think he meant "be like the annoying in-laws"
TROOOOOGGGGDOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
was a man, or maybe he was a dragon, or maybe he was a dragon man....
BUT HE WAS STILL TROOOOGGGDOOOOORRRRR!!!!
Burnination!
Bonus points for using "Burination" in an article
This steampunk-esque cooler is pretty much the exact opposite of Apple's design style.
My MacBook is actually the sole cause of global warming. These look interesting.
Just a hunch, but I don't think it is.
no way my MBP is way hotter than your MB. 170 degrees is kinda hot. on a side note do they make this for the MBP?
Wow. Those are the coolest looking coolers I've seen; most of them take up the whole bottom space :D
Hey! I want one of those for my MacBook Pro. Is it taking too long?
Wait, USB powered?
How many USB does the MBA have again?
"Even better for Air users: you won't be monopolizing your lone USB plug to work it."
Reading helps avoid embarrassing yourself.
@MeatyPi
/sarcasm...
yes, there is just one USB , this is the problem.
It has a passthrough.
Just don't try running anything TOO high powered.
Yep, no USB fishtanks :(.
Actually I think it even cures the MBA's I-need-an-extension-cable-jz-to-connect-a-flash-drive problem... that pass-through port looks to be flush with the heatsink and sticks out from the MBA body... heh
Yeah, it does seem to cure that issue.
Although there is still the question of whether or not there would be enough power
Moshi Zephyr: It puts the "Air" into MacBook Air!
They should have integrated a USB hub at the nearside of the cooler, wouldnt take up any more space, and would give MBA owners at least a couple more USB ports to use!
Hmm... The issue with this is that due to the power used by the fan you'd be limited to low power devices, and only one or 2 at a time.
Awesome. Just another thing to add onto the MBA that should have been there to begin with (sane heat management), which makes it as big or even bigger than most ultra-portables!
*hugs his ThinkPad X61s*
Meh. This idea is nothing new...
Powersupport have been doing this for years since the G4 Alu powerbooks. Infact, I have one :P

If the Macbook Air overheats so much, then why does it have the word air in its name? You would assume that they would be able to have at least somewhat decent air circulation inside of that thing.
Time to revolt against the misleading product names!
Air can't be hot?
It can be, but hot air is bad for a laptop. :P
macbook Fire
Damn!!! now i need two manila envelopes!!!....
Wouldn't the fact you're using power from the USB port make the power supply work harder because it has to supply power to the fan which is trying to cool the laptop of excess heat which is being generated by the power supply (and heat from the CPU which is power by the PSU) ?
You see them for Xbox360 consoles too, USB powered fans. Is it only me or does this make no sense at all?
It's only you...a fan uses a tiny amount of power, but can move a large amount of heat.
Those 360 coolers can make things worse, but just because they're poorly designed. Still, an AC powered table fan blowing over the console would probably make a lot more sense, especially since it's not portable like a laptop.
I'd never buy a laptop that had to be cooled with such a cumbersome external device, though. I thought Apple was supposed to be good at designing stuff?
this'll make the air even more tapered
I love how they made it so it doesn't even take up a USB plug. Great product!
Then again, my Toshiba M700 doesn't even get warm - without any cooling pad.. and it's 2.4GHz...
So much for superiour design. :)
Props for the Trogdor reference
My MacBook runs pretty cool, even when playing games in Boot Camp or watching movies all night. I don't see a need for a $75 cooling accessory.
Oh, my uncool Dell with discreet graphics can run at 100% for hours on end and is able to cool itself.
But I feel a lot cooler than the person who has to strap this piece of cr*p on their computer to operate it.
Ahhh, very subtle (Well, not really) pun in there. Intended or not?
I hope people can see on the picture that is doesn't take up a single USB-port. It simply extends one.
Engadget and you all 0 - me 1.
"Even better for Air users: you won't be monopolizing your lone USB plug to work it"
That's in reference to the passthrough port.
My blackbook 2.2 rarely gets hot. Fan only spins up when gaming or doing ichat video conversations. Dual virtual machines and photoshop etc works great.
Sorry but this Moshi's Zefyr MacBook cooler is also for 17" inches macbook's or only until 15" ?
