Not that we wouldn't eventually expect a 2.6GHz MacBook, but Apple's Hot News site is running this promo that references a new, upgraded model of the laptop (which right now only reaches 2.4GHz). Our take? We're thinking typo, not premature announcement.
The 2 part wouldn't be the typo unless Apple put 6.4. But 4 and 6 are still far enough apart for it to be a typo. Now it they put 2.3 or 2.5, that could be considered a typo.
Man, you guys will print anything to do with Mac. Apple is playing you guys like a fiddle and getting a lot of free publicity. BTW to all those who will castigate me saying that it's a blog not the news media... yes I realize that and no this is not where I look for unbiased information.
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed; or 2.5GHz or 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB L2 cache 17-inch MacBook Pro
2.5GHz or 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed
not only is it a 200 mHz upgrade, going from a 2.4 gHz chip to the 2.5 or 2.6 iteration of the current intel chip changes the onboard cache from 3mb to 6 mb...that is why i would want the 2.5 or 2.6 instead of the 2.4
But don't you all get it? A new product, comming accidentally online on monday. A top-selling phone taken from the shelfs, an other, eagerly awaited new one has to come really soon. And tuesday, happy tuesday... Well, everybody round here should be aware of Apples tuesday..
The current 2.4GHz is already ridiculously over-powered compared to the typical Windows laptops BestBuy is pushing!
Instead of upgrading the MacBook faster, Apple should offer a downgraded version in order to compete with mainstream Windows laptops: reduce the CPU to 1.6GHz, add a 1/2 inch thickness to the case, fill that extra space with lead weights, add randomly placed rubber feet on the bottom, and cut the price in half. Then it would be a good match to BestBuy's most popular models, and would probably fly off the shelf!
Hmm, you mean like the extremely popular HP 28xx series (19 I think) with the 250 GB SATA hdd, 3 GBs of RAM, clocked at 2.0 GHz that weighs in at 5 and a quarter pounds for under 900 bucks? Then again I guess you could always have the 2.4 GHz/2GB RAM/200 gig of storage in the 5.4 pound body of the MBP. For more than twice as much.
Same can be said with Sony's SZ and CR series, Gateway's M-6800 series, tons of other HP notebooks and even Dell's XPS series laptops.
Aside from the fact that the majority of people who go into Best Buy to pay even more for a preconfigured computer typically don't know crap about computers to begin with -- kind of like most Macintosh customers as well.
Why is this May 11th news if 17" MBPs were upgraded February 26? The "low-end" 15" is 2.4, although there is an option for 2.5, and the 17" comes (and has come) in 2.5 and 2.6 GHz since the last upgrade with multi-touch.

im not thinking typo....2 and a 6 are pretty darn far away on a keyboard
i was just gonna say that
maybe to confuse a 2 with a 1 or 3, but 6 is a long way off
i say who cares
If you look at a Number Pad; 2 and 6 are touching corners. Not too far.
I think gabe nailed it.

The max is 2.4.
Umm.... MacBook does up to 2.4 right now. Not 2.2.
The current macbook max is 2.4. (like mine)
So it's only a little jump.
Sounds realistic.
I hope it is a typo, and actually, we'll be getting those 26GHz MacBooks soon!
holy crap. talk about typos.
I should have known this would happen. I *just* bought a 2.4ghz MacBook less than a week ago! Damn you Apple!! *Shakes Fist*
It's all over their site now, so I'm guessing it's not a typo.
They've got a 2.6GHz and 2.5GHz MacBook Pro up for sale. It's 3,049 for a base model with a 2.6GHz C2D. Hit up the store.
which references a new model of the laptop (which right now only reaches 2.2GHz)
its actually 2.4GHz. according to apple.com.
2.6 wouldn't be an unbelievable jump
ah he caught his mistake.
Looks like the iMac got a boost, too. Up to 3.06GHz
...a few weeks ago.
*Hands over his Mac fanboy card.*
Do my eyes deceive me or is that macbook silver also?
That would be you. Ha ha i submitted this tip.
They fixed the mistake. :-)
They haven't fixed it yet its still there. Its in the center and you have to wait a second for it to change.
Which mistake are you talking about ?
The one your mother made when she gave birth to you Aviv.
suddenly my 1.83GHz MacBook begins to weep
My 2.0GHz MacBook is weeping too.
I would say a premature announcement as there is no reason they would describe the MacBook as new as it was last updated 3 months ago.

Blah blah blah blah blah blah
Agreed.
It says on the website that it is 2.6 GHz, on the MacBook pro page.
http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/
New Apple MacBook promo, not MacBook Pro.
On the apple store page it says 2.5 GHz.
Yep...they updated:
15-inch MacBook Pro
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed; or 2.5GHz or 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB L2 cache
17-inch MacBook Pro
2.5GHz or 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed
MacBook (13-inch), not MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro upgrades are old news.
Great post since it is now all over the Apple website!
M
I want the 3 point something please... Currently on a 2.4, so 2.6 is not a big enough jump to make me want to upgrade.
Anyone else hate these microscopic .02 upgrades?
It's almost embarrassing to comment on.
Even if they do, whoopie! It's 200MHz...
Good lord Apple gets a lot of free press.

New Apple MacBookPro - Now Even Hotter!
But don't you all get it?
A new product, comming accidentally online on monday.
A top-selling phone taken from the shelfs, an other, eagerly awaited new one has to come really soon.
And tuesday, happy tuesday... Well, everybody round here should be aware of Apples tuesday..
Yeeeehaaaa! Brand-new iPhone comming tomorrow! :)
talk about the biggest non-news news event. seriously. 200mhz is something engadget has to post about?
They changed the add, now its: http://img.skitch.com/20080512-8q4iipwdhbkf3n6agt579wy93s.jpg Macbook PRO
Spelled with a 'z' = 10 times the awesome?
a whole extra 200 mhz wow! a difference you would not notice at all
